I’m lost. Why are we replacing what we don’t have with what we do have?

I need a lie down.

I think what Annadog40 is trying to get at is if someone types the key sequence to create a yellow smiley (colon~dash~close parenthesis) that it would automatically turn into one of the forum smileys. Is that right AD?

I’ll go and get my chalkboard out to try and understand what all that is. All this modern lingo. I never knew about that sequence.

I was thinking about the problems html editor users (which seems to be an increasing number) have when trying mention those of us who have changed their usernames. I wonder whether it wouldn’t be an idea to create a locked and pinned thread that is a bit like a phone book. Just the one post in it, listing current active posters alphabetically who have changed their names followed by their @ name. It is not as if any are secret as they all appear automatically for those of us who do not use html. Mods could update it as necessary. Just a thought I had.

One option is to prevent people from changing their usernames. Would that be unpopular?

@Joe Just seen this.

As someone who was relatively new to having internet access when I joined, I signed up using the name I’d been using elsewhere without any thought of the forum I was joining, it was my default identity, and I used your default avatar for some time, and gave my location as “Floating downstream in the suburbs”. I was nagged into choosing an avatar by @LongHairedLady, which I thank her for, and added an appropriate signature. I had my default name, my location, and my signature. For a long time that suited. But I started to think, after over a year here, with a Ron Nasty avatar, and a Ron Nasty signature, why shouldn’t I be Ron Nasty?

I changed name, and location to a Nasty Rutles quote.

My point, it took me many months to find how I wanted present myself here. Nasty by name but (mainly) not by nature.

I would hate not to see others being allowed the same opportunity to discover who they want to be here.

On a separate note, though related to mentions, is there any way to fine-tune the drop down list to what’s actually being typed so that it just doesn’t select wherever those letters appear.

I will give you an example, the drop down for mentioning you. After typing @ followed by Joe, this is the list we’re getting:

joetest1
joechapman
joetest9
nyjoe
Joe Wiz
joeywhite00
sjoerd
joerodgers
JoeNorwood
HollywoodJoe
JoeSanFrancisco
sawyerjoe
joenoble44
joenamherst
JOEHERE
MasterJoey
par4Joe
Joe
joe2
joejoe

You are 18th on the list, and most times have to be scrolled down to find, and 6 of those that appear above you don’t even begin with J. Just wondering if there’s a way to fine tune? Yours isn’t the only name this happens with, though the more unusual chop down to what you want quickly.

OK, can I say that I really dislike the idea of autoreplacing the colon-parentheses :) smileys with the Beatles smileys? PLEASE DO NOT DO THAT!

I use the regular yellow smileys occasionally, and the Beatles ones not at all. (I’ve never liked the look of them, sorry.) Why can’t we just continue to use whichever one we choose? I don’t see why we shouldn’t continue to be given the regular option.

I don’t think Joe has any plans of replacing them. I, too, like the yellow smileys.

I am sure this has been asked about before, but is there ever going to be a BB app?  Would be cool.  I prefer using my phone when possible but it’s just the browser.

"Please don't bring your banjo back, I know where it's been..  I wasn't hardly gone a day, when it became the scene..  Banjos!  Banjos!  All the time, I can't forget that tune..  and if I ever see another banjo, I'm going out and buy a big balloon!"

If i remember correctly it was going to cost @Joe a lot of money to get it made but was something he was keeping in mind.

Wow, lots of suggestions and comments here. I’ll go through what I can.

Smileys – I can replace the emoticon characters with Beatles smileys, but it looks like it might not be an overwhelmingly popular move. I think the only one that automatically converts is the winking face – if you type ; ) without the space in between you’ll get a-hard-days-night-george-10

@Hey Jude ! I quite like the idea of a fangirl smiley, but it would have to scale right down to the size of the others and still be recognisable. If someone can find me a suitable image I’ll see what I can do with it.

@Ron Nasty There’s no way to fine tune that list, unfortunately. I didn’t know there were so many Joes! The test ones and Joe2 are mine. I guess it’s more of a problem with common and short names.

@LongHairedLady There are no plans for a Beatles Bible app. It’s been suggested before but I don’t want to do it. The reasons being: I’d have to pay someone to do it; I’d have to support multiple devices and multiple operating systems; it would require updating whenever those devices and OSs required it; I have a website which does what I want, and should render OK on mobile devices. I don’t think an app would be worth the investment, which I doubt I’d get back.

The only app I’d really like to do is one that could use location services to tell people which Beatles locations were near to them. But it would be such a headache trying to convert a web database system (WordPress) into an app and make it update automatically whenever the site gets changed.

There is a possibility of the forum integrating with the Tapatalk app, so people could post to and browse the forum from their mobile devices. I don’t think it’s possible yet (Tapatalk needs to change its API) but it’s something the Simple Press devs were considering. It wouldn’t be a Beatles Bible app, just a third-party one. Is there any interest for it?

Edit: Apparently Tapatalk aren’t even going to consider an integration until Q2 2015 at the earliest, so don’t hold your breath.

Have videos not auto embed

Sorry, it’s not going to happen. Automatic embedding (oEmbed) is a sitewide thing, and it’s really useful to me. If I wanted to disable it on the forum (which I don’t) I’d have to lose it right across the site, and I don’t want to do that.

@Joe. Is it possible to add in the option to select which sub-forum you would like to search in. For example if you want to just search the ‘Songs’ forum you currently have to navigate to that sub-forum before searching.

Not a big issue just annoying.

You can search in current forum so if you are in the Songs fourm you can click search current forum and it should just show options from that forum

@meanmistermustard I don’t think so, no. Sorry. I have very little control over that side of things. I guess there’s no option to display all sections of the forum because in theory there could be dozens, even hundreds, and the list would be impractical within the advance search section. I agree it’s a nuisance having to browse to that section first.
