Is animation allowed?
Yes! That is, but you can’t animate pictures like you do unless you took them. If one was able to animate from scratch and make like a little Pixar movie to the song, that would be acceptable, and probably very cool.

I think I might do a Yoko inspired video.
As I have mentioned before there is an abundance of wretched slugs in and around my room, therefore I can do Fly maybe but with slugs instead!
The thought of actually doing that makes me want to throw up, yuck!

I was thinking about doing some time lapse, which reminded me of some Yoko stuff, but I definitely don’t want it to be Yoko-y. Don’t know how that would be received.
Although there doesn’t seem much to do, so maybe if you can teach the slugs to dance that’ll work!

I didn’t see one. I can read it again though. I think if a minor were to win their guardian would get the money, but just to enter an to win the box set, I don’t think they would need an age limit.
Maybe the site that you have to sign up with to submit has an age limit… Actually I don’t remember entering my age.
I don’t think so is my final answer.

My friend and I are thinking of collaborating. We’ll split the 5K if we win, lol. I have no idea what we’ll do yet though.

@parlance If that Paul video you made had these restrictions on it, it still would’ve worked, so I’m sure you and your friend could figure something amazing out! I’d be excited to see it if you do…

\And yeah, scenic shots are what I was going to incorporate in part, but from reading the rules on the site, I feel like they don’t want a nature video set to music.
Just curious, what part of the rules gave you that impression?

@parlance One part outright said we don’t want family/travel/nature videos set to music.
I’ll go find it.

Oh, I see. Well, I don’t think that means you can’t have some nature scenes. They just want to make sure you have a story.

In this section, it says:
We don’t want family/travel/stock footage set to music […] – in fact we probably won’t publish them.
By travel I assume that means scenic views of cities/nature/etc. Although I think using them is fine, just not the whole video.

Of course you can have some, I said earlier in the thread I was going to include a bit, you just can’t have trees and George’s song.

I imagine the rule is due partly to legal ramifications – the need for releases for people and property used. And stock footage – that’s just lazy.

As I have posted here, the George Harrison website has recently announced a contest to make the official music video for George’s song What Is Life!
The top five entries (selected by Universal Music & Genero.tv) will be the proud winners of the new George Harrison Apple Years Box Set, and lucky winner number 1 will get $5,000 on top of that! The top video is chosen by Dhani and Oliva from the top five.
I’m going to try and put together a video for it, although I’m sure real filmmakers are aware of this opportunity, giving me little chance. Is anyone else going to attempt to make a video? Winning this would be amazing… Directing a former Beatle‘s official music video! And a great song too! If you are thinking about doing this, you can read more about the contest and requirements here.
Apples to anyone who’s going to enter, and good luck! I’m sure this’ll be fun…
I know it’s dangerous to quote the first post of a two-page thread without reading the rest of the thread, but…they wouldn’t have opened the contest to the public if they expected professional quality videos. What they’re looking for is a great concept. You could just storyboard it from there, or walk through it, explaining what would happen at each point, what props would be where, who would be where. It’s the concept that will win, not the production, and imnsho I think some of the people from here could come up with a good one. In fact, maybe a group could get together and brainstorm. You know, everyone put in bits of what they know about George, a few people cram Living in the Material World and any other video they can get their hands on, another listen to audio interviews & music, some people scan books. Everyone puts their ideas together and maybe a general picture of “What Is Life ” both as a love song, and the literal question, which he seems to have answered to his satisfaction during his lifetime.
Sheesh…I hope this makes sense, it just all spurted out at once
EDIT: I read the thread and I find my post wasn’t too redundant. BTW I have what I think is a pretty good concept, but I’ll wait until the thread goes private (or maybe I’ll keep it for myself </evil_laugh>. I want that box set all to myself lol.

@Matt Busby Perfect sense!! And I think you’re on to something with the concept. I’m sure however they want the visual quality to be good, but maybe they’ll be more lenient than I thought. That gives me a little more hope!

Myself, I think you’re reading it wrong. They seem to be looking for a broadcast ready video, and not a concept that needs further works:
We’re looking for high quality videos that have the potential to become official videos.
We’re all about creativity and pushing the boundaries in terms of what video is and what it can be. There are no real creative guidelines on what we’re looking for, but it should be high quality, creative, innovative and entertaining. The video selection usually becomes the official video for that song/brand/project and will often be intended for broadcast, so keep that in mind when making your video.
Make sure your video is shot in 16:9 or wider, and shot in HD (at least 720p; 1080p preferred) so it can be used across all of today’s media platforms.
Could just be how I’m reading it though.

@Ron Nasty That’s what I was saying above, they want a good, visually appealing video, with a good concept! Maybe not fully professional level, but a great video to watch and to think about.

@Mr. Kite I’m just not sure how much leniency they’ll give. I think they want something ready for broadcast. That’s where I think @Matt Busby has it wrong. They’re not going to see a good concept that they actually need to make the video for and give it to that. It needs to be of the quality that parlance managed with her Appreciate video.

@Ron Nasty I understand… Maybe I’m just not expressing what I mean well enough. I think they want a professional looking video, obviously done by the one entering, but they want it to have a good idea behind it like Busby said.
I think it needs both not one or the other. However, I believe if the idea is excellent, and the video is just one step under pro filmmaker, they’re more likely to accept it than a bad idea that is at pro filmmaker level.
Thats all I meant by a bit more lenient, overall I don’t think they’ll be lenient at all, and it is a challenge.
Parlances video is the perfect example of a good idea, and good quality. But let’s say her resolution wasn’t as good, but still HD, and it went up against someone who made a video of them just dancing to the song with slightly better video quality. Parlance would still win.
And they definitely want it broadcast ready, I understood that from the beginning.
All that aside, I’m discussing it with a friend and I think we may have the beginnings of an idea.

Well, I was thinking if we tried a group effort, who would get the box set? @Joe I think.
George Harrison fans are probably diverse enough, socially, economically, and by nationality, so that a majority will have nothing better than a cell phone to film with and free editing software. Story boarding would be too rough, but I don’t see Olivia and Dhani being the type that would exclude everyone without access to an a/v production studio, even a ruidmentary home studio (which is beyond the reach of most of us poor b******s who live on peace and love
This is not an easy nut to crack The winners will definitely earn it. But I still think the Harrisons will be looking more at concept and less at technical production. All things considered, the simpler may be the better.
Back to finish off the canon, starting side 2 of Abbey Road (which I put last, after Let It Be ).
