I can’t answer about the ukulele, but as for the writing, they seem to be lyrics, the white ones on the bottom are from When We Was Fab and the black ones next to it are That’s The Way It Goes, the others I’m not very sure.

beatlebug, while the exact year is unknown, George is said to have got seriously into the ukulele following his rediscovery of George Formby in the late ’80s. After many hours spent rewatching all Formby’s old films, and anything else he could find of Formby’s, emerging a massive Formby fan (referred to as being Formby’s biggest fan by the George Formby Appreciation Society when he passed), and a convert to the instrument that Formby played.
As to the writing on the cover of Best of Dark Horse :
Take a look at the writing on the lower half of the cover, focus on the one that’s partly across George’s picture with a line between the top three lines and the bottom five. The top three lines are from Cockamamie Business while the lower five are from When We Was Fab. The writing, therefore, is bits and pieces picked out from George’s handwritten drafts for songs that appear on the album.

Thanks, RN!
Okay, George, I give in. You’ve persuaded me; I’ll get a ukelele.

Great news SG, it’s a lovely instrument! Jake Shimabukuro is one of my favorite ukulele players. He does a complete version of Bohemian Rhapsody that’s really intense. Here’s his version of While My Guitar Gently Weeps .

I’m going to get an electric guitar first. And a bottleneck slide.
In the meantime I’ll be learning ukelele chords using my awesome ukeguitar technique.

???
Um… he was about thirteen, I think, and guitar was the craze at the time, so he got a cheap guitar and sort of taught himself. It wasn’t easy, but his parents were very encouraging.

This is cool
Thanks @meanmistermustard, this letter is awesome. George had very unusual handwriting style – wish I knew how to analyze it . Most people that move to Hawaii take a Hawaiian name and it appears George took the name Keoki. I wonder if he ever referenced the name in a song? Btw-your Hawaiian name is Koka (translated as Scotsman) .

Koka. I could live with that. Is Kola a Hawaiian girls name?
If it is, you’ll just have to live with being a boy named Sue.

I love George’s bad handwroter– it’s as adorable as his grin and just as impromptu and smiley.

Hmm, interesting. I don’t think so, though he referenced Hawaii several* times (Soft Hearted Hana, Rocking Chair In Hawaii). Someone who is more familiar with his not-on-Brainwashed-or-BODH songs correct me.

Is there a reason why SayaOtonashi’s question has been pinned? I wouldn’t even realise it had been asked had SG not mentioned a pinned post.

Ho, hey, ho. I must have tapped the “pin” button when I went to tap the “approve” button. Mystery solved. Thanks SG and RN!!!!
Either I tapped both somehow or a pinned post is automatically approved.
