He had them done on the Cloud Nine album cover, I think.

Actually now that I think of the Dark Horse tour, we have a good few pictures of him smiling

Where they look better but not perfect so that lowers the gap to 1975 to around 1986- we shall find the answer!

Thinking about that sequence in the Help ! Film where George tells the hobo to mow the grass and wondered if his interest in gardening started before or after that film?

^ I think afterwards, though I don’t know what it had to do with the incident you mention.

And speaking of gardening– being on a ‘Ballad Of Sir Frankie Crisp’ kick just now got me to wondering about George’s Friar Park estate: did he have help with all those gardens (I should think so; it’s a big place), and what did they do with the gardens after he passed away? Hire more gardeners?

(I want to visit Friar Park. Preferably while listening to ‘BOSFC’.)

(I just made a post in which I used not a single smiley. That is unnatural. Here we go: a-hard-days-night-george-3a-hard-days-night-george-9a-hard-days-night-george-2a-hard-days-night-george-10ahdn_george_07ahdn_george_06 That’s better.)

I was curious about it ’cause, in that sequence, they seem to be doing their favourite thing when arriving home…john reading, paul playing some music, and george worried about his little garden…So i dunno if george’s hobby was a real thing or just chosen randomly…in the second case it’s funny ’cause gardening and indian music (both in the movie and casual things) really did influence his life…

George’s real flare for gardening grew after he bought Friar Park in 1970. When he bought it was disused and dilapidated, covered in weeds, nettles, thorns etc. and he really enjoyed clearing up all of the rubbish and seeing what was hidden underneath. He rented goats and got forklifts to lift up some of the stuff that had been disposed over the years and began to plant flowers and shrubs eventually creating a Japanese garden, an Elizabethan garden, an Alpine meadow, a rock garden and many more. I’d say it was the beautiful architecture in Friar Park that sparked his interest in preserving it and making the grounds look as beautiful as they could.

That and I don’t think the gardener is a hobo 😉 and I haven’t seen Help ! in over a year but wasn’t George just lying on his bed during that scene?

And speaking of gardening– being on a ‘Ballad Of Sir Frankie Crisp’ kick just now got me to wondering about George’s Friar Park estate: did he have help with all those gardens (I should think so; it’s a big place), and what did they do with the gardens after he passed away? Hire more gardeners?

(I want to visit Friar Park. Preferably while listening to ‘BOSFC’.)

He had help with the gardens- in the beginning fellow musicians and Hare Krishna members took residence at Friar Park and they all worked together on the gardens. One of George’s old head-gardeners did an interview a good while back where he talked about taking care of the gardens:

The ex-head gardener at Friar Park this week spoke of George Harrison ’s ‘wicked’ sense of humour. Derek Mann, aged 48, said that George was a kind and gentle man, who was genuine and totally unpretentious. “I first met George and his wife Olivia when I was working as a gardener at a hotel in the Virgin Islands,” said Derek. “I took them on a guided tour of the grounds and we spoke at length about gardening. He said that if I was to come back to the UK to get in touch and he would give me a job. “When I returned he was as good as his word and I started at Friar Park in 1991. “We would regularly walk around the grounds together so he could tell me what he wanted done. Sometimes he would have a ukulele with him and play a few chords while we wandered around. “There were a couple of spots in the garden where George would sit, watch the sun go down and meditate. There I planted night scented stock plants, which gave off a very strong perfume. He thanked me and said it reminded him of his mother who used to plant the same flowers in their council house home.”

Derek, who was forced to retire due to ill-health in 1994, recalls seeing Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr at Friar Park, “They always seemed to get on extremely well,” he said. “The tennis star John McEnroe paid a visit once. He played a few sets with George, Olivia and their son Dhani on their own court in the gardens. John Lennon built a mosaic of what looked like an alien in the garden which was surrounded by roses named after Paul McCartney . “George had a pet Yorkshire terrior called Winston, John Lennon ’s middle name.”

And Derek said that George was not quite the recluse that everyone believed. “He had a mountain bike that he used to ride around the estate on and would often put on a pork-pie hat and a pair of scruffy jeans with holes in them and cycle through Henley and onto the river bank. “He also owned an old fashioned racing car, which was barely road-worthy, but on occasions he would race it up and down Gravel Hill wearing a leather flying helmet and goggles.”

Derek said that George was a generous man who gave his original head gardener a new car as a Christmas present. “George was a genuinely nice man,” said Derek. “I remember fondly the times when he and I would sit together in his kitchen with a cup of coffee and talk about gardening. Together, with the rest of the world, I shall miss him.”

Here is a picture of George and the gardeners from 1979 as well as a P60 of one of the gardeners- “oooh George Harrison M.B.E well la-di-da”

After his death the gardeners would have continued working on, Olivia helps as well 🙂

Is there anybody going to listen to my story who knows of a watermark-free version of this photo? I did a search-by-image but that didn’t help me much.

@AppleScruffJunior inquired some time previously
Here’s a question that I don’t know the answer to and of course because I am me- it is a question on George’s aesthetic quality.

When did George actually get his teeth fixed i.e. when his fangs were capped?

He went from this:

Image Enlarger

^ Dracula-esque George

to

Image Enlarger

^I-recommend-Colgate-Whitening-Gel-to-keep-my-pearls-as-clean-as-this-shirt-I’m-wearing-George

I abhor the above photo, looks like he’s one of those ‘Injury Lawers 4 U’ that I keep on seeing on the telly *shudders*

Well, does anyone know the answer?/Cares to look up pictures of George smiling from about 1968 to the mid 80’s to see when his teeth changed?

Please excuse me while I finish spluttering with laughter…

I think George did them sometime round mid-to-late 1968. Witness:

Let It Be -George-with straight teeth and capped fangs of January 1969.

And there ye have it. You’re welcome.  Any excuse to air some of the most adorable photos I have of George.

What do you think happened to George after he died? Are his ashes scattered at Friar Park or is he buried there? Did Olivia take his ashes to India?

When exactly were George and Olivia married? I know it was in September 1978, but I’m unsure of the exact date. And yes, I did check the History page. And Wikipedia.

I believe their anniversary is September 2nd, 1978. This tumblr site contains about 1000 George FAQs. It seems well researched but some of the contents might be a little suspect a-hard-days-night-george-10

From Keith Badman’s ‘The Beatles Diary, Volume 2 : After the Break-Up, 1970-2001’ –

Saturday September 2 [1978]

Four weeks after the birth of their son, George and Olivia Arias are married in a secret ceremony at the Henley-on-Thames Register Office. The press are not informed of the marriage until September 8.

The statement in bold is erroneous; the time elapsed was only three weeks and six days. a-hard-days-night-ringo-15 a-hard-days-night-george-10

Thanks all for the replies. I will remember to raise a glass on that day.

*insert photo of George raising glass that Ron Nasty (I think) posted for ASJ’s birthday (I think) that I can’t find*

I wasn’t sure where to put this, I looked through the first several pages of topics. Anyway, for you spotify users – George’s entire body of solo work is now available streamed. I just signed up for Spotify to grab a link and it’s being recalcitrant, but it looks like you can search it easily enough. So, just fyi a-hard-days-night-george-10

Half of what I say is meaningless...

You can always post news like that in the ‘Fiendish Thingys’ page if you want, it’s original idea of being the “Zoimygod isn’t George Harrison the most wonderful creature ever created?*” has kind of calmed down over the past year and a bit so feel free to use it to post any titbits in it that don’t deserve their own thread.

*Which he is by the way, I still freaking love that man, don’t doubt me 😛

Right then, I have two Miscellaneous Questions for ye O Knowledgeable Ones:

1. When and how did George get into ukelele?

2. What is that writing on the cover of the Best Of Dark Horse compilation?

Edit: Oh, I see, ’tis handwritten lyrics. Never mind that question.
