Just saw that this was announced today. It includes all of George’s studio albums (including Wonderwall Music and Electronic Sound ) as well as Live In Japan and two exclusive picture discs. Oddly though, The Concert for Bangladesh is not included. They’re releasing the albums individually as well, which means I can finally get Brainwashed on vinyl without paying tons of cash for it!!
Also, they announced a George Harrison turntable, and an extended edition of I, Me, Mine. Here is a link to the site. http://www.georgeharrison.com/
I personally am super-excited for this; though I already have most of the albums on vinyl anyway. What do you think?

I am very excited for this release even though I’m not going to be able to buy it.
I will be able to scoop up some of the missing records in my collection a couple years down the line.

Ridiculously expensive, I have a load of original George LPs that I’d say I bought for about €30 total, why would I spend €430 for new records and some silly pins???
Round these parts you spend about €20-€30 for new vinyl, so what is the extra €70 for? The box?!?!
Eine Geldverschwendung denke ich.
Also what is the Estate’s obsession with the Shepard Fairey image? It’s on everything ‘George’ now, can they not vary it up a bit?
Also €500 for a turntable???? *gently weeps*

I grew up with vinyl and while I do occasionally buy a record, I don’t understand what the fascination with vinyl is or why people would prefer it exclusively. A CD is a more faithful representation of what music actually sounds like. The “warm” sound of vinyl is a distortion of the original sound that occurs from the needle hitting the vinyl. Also, who enjoys listening to pops and crackles? Is it the “I’m having nostalgia for something I never experienced in the first place” hipster factor?

^ Vinyl is definitely a fashion statement today for the majority of buyers (there are of course audiophiles who think vinyl is the best format but they are in the minority). Vinyl just looks so “cool” to young people, it’s big, unique, and has cool massive artwork (sometimes comes with free posters and crap as well). But it’s not very practical, you can’t bring it anywhere with you, the more you listen to it the more it deteriorates, majority of people don’t have a record player so you can’t bring it to your friend’s house, and you’re just going to end up listening to the digital MP3’s that comes with the record, downloading the tracks illegally or just buying the CD and burning it.
A friend of mine spent like €80 for like 4 records a week ago, like I’d never be able to piss money like that away. I only ever buy vinyl used and I think the most I’ve paid was €8 for a stellar Cloud Nine .

In the past, stores that sold vinyl were given money up front by record companies for defective product, so that they didn’t have to eat the cost when customers returned vinyl.
That stopped when CDs became the norm and never changed back. That is one reason vinyl is so overpriced now, and why so many stores have policies that you can’t return a record if it’s been opened.
Not a good deal if you ask me, especially when there is no longer the quality control of ages past in the pressing plants.
I still buy CDs because they are cheaper and you don’t have to have a download code to get the mp3s.
Of course, companies like Apple are doing away with CD drives on their computers because so many people listen exclusively to mp3s or streaming music now. Mp3s are the cassettes of today–they are portable and they sound crappy.
Of course, since everyone now loves lossy formats that can easily be lost or destroyed, cassettes are back in vogue, too.
If more people cared about sound quality, CDs would still be as popular in Western countries as they are in Japan.

I’ve started to jump into the world of Vinyl, and I find it quite entertaining. I usually buy things that I already own on digital or CD, but I love the listening experience. I’ve limited myself to spending no more than $5 on a record so I don’t blow all my money on this new vinyl collecting habit of mine. Although I might be flexible if we were talking about a vinyl copy of The Beatles.

I suppose you’re probably right. I would have said it feels cool, because I kind of have a connection with the physical format of my music, and there’s nothing quite as fun to play as a big, slightly floppy, shiny black vinyl platter.
But it’s not very practical, you can’t bring it anywhere with you, the more you listen to it the more it deteriorates, majority of people don’t have a record player so you can’t bring it to your friend’s house
All true, but I still think it’s worth it.
And FYI, my friend does have a record player, so if I wanted to bring my copy of George Harrison to her house and play it, I could.
and you’re just going to end up listening to the digital MP3’s that comes with the record, downloading the tracks illegally or just buying the CD and burning it.
It helps to own an album in multiple formats, I suppose. I personally see mp3s as more of a bonus format — nice to have when traveling or suchlike, but to really feel like I own an album, I’ve got to have the psysical disk (or tape, but cassettes suck ).

Amazon UK often has ridiculous pre-release prices, but it’ll drop in the coming weeks (ahead of release date). I don’t know why they do it – perhaps to make people feel good about the price drop guarantee.
I’m a bit underwhelmed about this, particularly since the originals are not so hard to come by. Also, it’s a shame they’re not including any rarities, or even a book. The Harrison estate hasn’t exactly been generous on that front lately. I’m a bit fed up of record labels just putting out back catalogue material when you just know they’ll eventually release deluxe editions with demos, outtakes and more.

Exactly. The only reason I would pay gor a box set like this is if I get the entire catalogue physically and digitally, and I better not just be getting the albums. I want to hear the demos, especially during his later years, which I know they have access to and aren’t releasing.

I wouldn’t pay that much for this box set either, but I still think it’s just so cool that it exists! Plus, this should make it easier for my to truly complete my collection, with the individual releases of Brainwashed and Live In Japan .
