All Things Must Pass album artwork – George Harrison

Written by: Harrison
Recorded: June 1970
Producers: George Harrison, Phil Spector
Engineers: Ken Scott, Phil McDonald

Released: 30 November 1970 (UK), 27 November 1970 (US)

Available on:
All Things Must Pass

Hear Me Lord is perhaps the most openly emotional song on George Harrison’s All Things Must Pass , a naked plea to the creator for forgiveness, and assistance to cope and love and find direction. Proof, were it needed, that John Lennon was not the only former Beatle in 1970 baring his soul in song.

I’ve always liked this song; the lyrics are fantastic in which you can clearly hear George’s longing and the musicianship is so cool. The electric demo is also really good (love that guitar) but there is an 8 minute early mix where the band are in full blast and it’s one of the greatest outtakes I’ve heard from anywhere (and not the 7 minute one on YouTube which is an earlier outtake).

Always thought it was Nicky Hopkins on piano, turns out its actually Billy Preston, go figure. Hopkins didnt play at all on All Things Must Pass , which is surprising given how many solo records he did play on and how much his style sounds like Leon Russell and Billy Preston on Piano. Having Leon on piano and Bobby Whitlock on organ would be a cool tandem in its own right, Having Billy Preston able to do both is just insane. He is the man.

Strangely enough my favorite keyboard part on the album is the organ on Let It Down , thats played by the late Gary Wright, the dream weaver. Given how star studded the lineup of keyboardists is I always assumed Hopkins was there at some point. Knowing the Hear Me Lord piano is played by Billy Preston does make sense. Its very sharp and has a little bit more of a gospel flavor than Leon and Nicky’s classic blues rock sound.
