‘Dark Horse’ is the title track of George Harrison’s fifth solo album. See more…
I wrote that at five in the morning on my way to bed. I was just playing my guitar and I just thought of the line, ‘I’m a Dark Horse ‘. When I was a kid, I always remember them saying, ‘Oh, have you heard about Mrs Penguin from the Co-op? She’s knocking off Mr Jones. Oh, she’s a Dark Horse .’ It was always that sort of thing. I was brought up knowing that Dark Horse was a phrase like that. So I thought, ‘I’m a Dark Horse . Okay, I’m running on a dark racecourse,’ but that just cracked me up. I thought, ‘No, I can’t use that. It’s crummy.’ Then, the next day, it was still on my mind and I thought, ‘A dark racecourse? It may be silly, but it’s so silly, it’s fantastic, because that’s the way it is. I’m a Dark Horse , but I’m running on a dark racecourse, you know.’ What else do you expect? I was just born into it. Don’t blame me, I’m a victim of circumstance.

I like this song, always have. Granted the title really ought to be ‘Dark Hoarse’, but if you can look past that it’s a good little tune with a fabulous, ever-so-Harrisonic chord progression (and versions with less dark hoarse vocals abound).
Yet another ‘sod you all, I’m my own person’ song… he sure wrote a lot of those.

I like the Live In Japan version, it’s loose and funky!
I'm like Necko only I'm a bassist ukulele guitar synthesizer kazoo penguin and also everyone. Or is everyone me? Now I'm a confused bassist ukulele guitar synthesizer kazoo penguin everyone who is definitely not @Joe. This has been true for 2016 & 2017 but I may have to get more specific in the future.

I love Dark Horse ! And you’re very right, SG, ’tis a very nice tune.
I personally don’t mind the hoarse vocals, I actually think it adds a smidge more character to the song. Interesting how that works…

Indeed it does, I’ll say that; although I’m of mixed feelings about it myself. Sometimes I’m inclined to agree; other times I want to hear what he’s singing properly, without the hoarseness, but as I said there are plenty of non-hoarse versions out there. And of course, it would probably have helped its popularity among not-so-hardcore Harrifans if the song had had a stronger vocal.
I just think ’tis extremely ironic that it should be ‘Dark Horse ‘ that is so hoarse…

Have always found ‘Dark Horse ‘ to be one of George’s best songs with a very appropriate vocal. The highlight on an otherwise very ropy album.

Huh. I’ve always thought of Dark Horse as a great album. Well, opinions are opinions and I find it cool to learn about others’.

Ya, I have to agree with @meanmistermustard. I can’t listen to a full Harrison Album. Great song though!

The Apple jams are hard to swallow. Ok in small bites but all at once leaves me feeling ill.

ATMP was a pretty good album. Most, if not all of those songs he wrote during the Beatles years that weren’t put on any of their Albums, so he had years to polish those songs. But again, I can’t sit through 1 LP, let alone 3 LPs.

Shame on you Bongo and you’re derailing my this thread.
George was indeed a Dark Horse ; when I was first learning about the Beatles’ personalities, I found his the most difficult to stake out. There are so many sides to the man.
