‘Be Here Now’ is the eighth song on George Harrison’s fourth solo album Living In The Material World.

Harrison wrote the song in Los Angeles in 1971, while working on the soundtrack of Ravi Shankar’s documentary film Raga. See more…

‘Be Here Now’ was written in Nichols Canyon, Los Angeles, a week after ‘Miss O’Dell’ (I moved from Malibu as it was too far to drive to the studio each day). I was almost falling asleep, I had the guitar in bed and the melody came fast. The lyric was inspired by the funny story called ‘The Transformation of Richard Alpert into Baba Ram Das’.

Over the years I have seen a number of gripes about ‘Be Here Now’ being a slow miserable dirge that at the very least almost sucks the life out of the album, but, whilst some of those could be argued as having good cases, I like it a lot. Maybe it’s the words, which are fantastic, or I find the tune and instruments kind of hypnotic. No idea. But it’s a damn good George song.

Lyrics

Remember, now, be here now
As it’s not like it was before
The past, was, be here now
As it’s not like it was before – it was
Why try to live a life
That isn’t real
No how
A mind, that wants to wander
‘Round a corner
Is an un-wise mind
Now, is, be here now
And it’s not what it was before
Remember, now, be here now
As it’s not like it was before – it was

Can’t imagine any hardcore George fans having an issue with this song, in my opinion its a gorgeous melding of his indian influences and his folk heroes. If you’re looking for music to dance to or play at a party, you’ll have better luck looking to the Cloud 9 album. This is an introspective album, and Be Here Now is perhaps its most introspective song. And an absolute beauty at that.

There is an unreleased Lana Del Rey track called ‘Some Things Last A Long Time’ which reminds me so much of ‘Be Here Now’  to the point where whenever I hear it I have to play ‘BHN’. It makes me wonder if Lana had heard this. Maybe I’m just mad.

Apparently it’s originally by Daniel Johnston. I think I prefer Lana’s version though.

[snïp]

it is definitely hypnotic. I’ve always liked it. I’m just now learning to play it, and it’s quite simple and drone-like, but the graceful tempo and hushed quality of the vocals really convey the feeling of stopping to savor each moment and really be in the present. Top quality songwriting. People who gripe about it being a miserable dirge must simply have unwise minds that want to wander round a corner. ahdn_george_06 This song belongs to Who Can See It. a-hard-days-night-george-4
