I think George saw himself as an equal to John & Paul quite from the start because he knew he contributed more than what could be seen, but they didn’t. You know, “If John & Paul can write, anyone can write” ? Most of us are quite fine with George’s role, but was he? However, I don’t think George being given more album space would’ve eased the tensions or that the band would’ve lasted longer, it went deeper than that, I think.I’m not really a big fan of saying that The Beatles should’ve gone on longer, but I’m just sad about the way it ended.
Giving George a more prominent role may not have solved all their problems – there would still be the tensions brought on by John/Yoko – but I think it would make a difference in that George wouldn’t feel so resentful of Paul. Like you said, it’s one thing for fans to be ok with George’s role but he himself wasn’t. I still feel that one of Paul’s biggest mistakes was that he didn’t pay more attention to George because if he was able to secure his relationship with him then he’d also have Ringo. That would’ve helped with the whole Allen Klein situation. If nothing else, it would’ve improved relations in the decades following the breakup.
