Well, it looks like there isn’t a topic for this album, so I’m creating one. (If there is a thread already and somehow my search didn’t pull it up, by all means, merge us.)
What does everyone think of George’s 1982 album? I know @meanmistermustard is a fan. I was giving it a first listen (I’ve already heard the title, first, and second tracks) and personally, I like it quite well. I used to hate the synth on Wake Up My Love, but I’ve grown used to it now and it’s a good opener; That’s The Way It Goes is brilliant; Unknown Delight is, well, delightful. And the demo of Mystical One, with George chatting about bits of paper… love it.
Underneath all the overabundant synth, I find it a very nice album, and wholly undeserving of the boot-heel reviews it got. What do you think?

‘Wake Up My Love’ is horribly dated however the rest of the album is fantastic; skip the opener and you have a wonderful George album where its him playing music for himself giving the whole to anyone who may not like it.
‘I Really Love You’ is what hooked me but now my favourites are ‘Gone Troppo ‘, ‘Dream Away’, ‘That’s The Way It Goes’, ‘Greece’ and ‘Baby Don’t Run Away’. Easily up there in my top 5 favourite solo albums (tho there would be about 14 albums in that list).

I’ve had a listen and the production is rather bright indeed, possibly as a musical theme to the title. I had no idea Dream Away was on this, it used to bug me every time I watched Time Bandits as to where it came from, and deserves a topic of its own for the weird chorus and the entirely confusing rhythms. That’s The Way It Goes is of course a classic, and I particularly like Greece with its sunny production and instrumental focus.
This has nothing to do with anything but @Beatlebug, I listened to Miss O’Dell and what a typical George sentiment, one of his best country songs too.

The ‘Dream Away’ version in the ‘Time Bandits’ is different from that on the ‘Gone Troppo ‘ album.
From The Beatles Rarity‘
George Harrison composed and recorded “Dream Away” specifically for the Time Bandits soundtrack in December 1980 and it was heard over the closing credits of the film. However, the soundtrack was never released. George decided to re-record the song for inclusion on his 1982 LP release Gone Troppo and this is what became the standard version. Here, with a different feel and at a minute and half longer, is the original Time Bandits version of “Dream Away.”

Oh blimey, I just listened to Unknown Delight again (this might be my favourite on this album, besides That’s The Way It Goes), and do you hear that guitar solo?! It’s Something ! At least the first five seconds of it anyway.
George was fond of quoting himself, I notice. I think he did it as a nice little joke for the fans, to see if they’d notice anything. Or perhaps he just liked to use the same things over…

That one sounds like an edit piece of the opening music with a sting in the middle and the first version of Dream Away put together. The differences and the many similarities with the album version are interesting. Perhaps he’d kept the original backing track, there’s so many elements that are common to both versions, but clearly his vocal was either redone or at least doubled, and there are extra parts to it.

Yes.
If only for That’s The Way It Goes and Unknown Delight. And Greece. And… yes, it’s worth it.

So… is this album worth purchasing? It’s the only GH album I haven’t got.
It’s a great album, I love it.
Very funky, upbeat music for the most part of it even ‘Wake Up My Love’ which mmm isn’t a big fan of.
You also have the lovely Greece (Monty Pythagoras), Dream Away from the Time Bandits’ film’s soundtrack and one of ASJ’s favourite George track ‘Circles’, (me loves that echo) which came from an early Beatles-era demo.
All-in-all it’s a solid album to listen to, if you’re ever down, give it a whirl and it’ll brighten your day (or your money back).

Without any doubt YES!!!
It’s easily one of my favourite solo Beatles albums where George is clearly making music for himself, not giving a crap about pleasing anyone else. As ASJ says i’m not much of a fan of ‘Wake Up My Love’, the only touch upon the music scene of the time, but everything else i really like.
‘Greece’, ‘Dream Away’, ‘I Really Love You’, ‘That’s The Way It Goes’, ‘Gone Troppo ‘ and ‘Circles’ are all excellent.
Most slated it at the time, most never bothered to give it a chance.

I will say this–when I first heard Gone Troppo , I thought “What is this crap?” It sounds very much like a product of the 80’s, like an 80’s album where George went to a tropical island and wrote silly songs on his guitar, and then said, “Well, now we have to throw on some bad 80’s keyboards.” But once I dropped all my expectations, I loved it. The songwriting is really good. It just has to grow on you. I now rank it very highly.

Listening to this now and I like it even better than I did last time. It’s very happy-go-lucky music, great housework soundtrack. I don’t even mind the eightiesness after a while.
