You listen to the songBut wouldn’t that also be cheating the same as looking at a sheet.
NO IT IS DIFFERENT AND PROBABLY STILL CHEATING BUT SINCE THERE ARE NO RULES AGAINST IT I GUESS THAT MAKES IT OAKY

No looking up lyrics! The fun of the game is seeing what you know, so if you don’t know it wait for someone else to answer!

I shouldn’t really be saying it, but I thought one of the good outcomes of that game was supposed to be to listen to songs that you haven’t to before, or for a long time so that you can participate. But sometimes you can get the lyrics wrong while listening to a song, like I always thought it was “when I think of love as something you” instead of “as something new ” in In my life.
That game has made me revisit a couple of songs I hadn’t in quite awhile, so yeah. And sometimes things as we listen can get missed “in translation” or heard wrong, so I for one don’t mind people listening to the song to play. Just don’t look at any lyric sheets.

Continuing here:
I really like the Song Lyric game, and I think it could be a lot of fun. I really had a great time with No Reply because it really felt as if some of us really wanted to do the “I NEARLY DIED, I NEARLY DIED” part.
But the thing is, with obscure songs, the thread becomes a little dead a little too early, and it needs reviving, so while I agree with not “looking up” lyrics, I don’t see anything that says one shouldn’t “listen to the lyrics”. In fact, I think this is only the rarest of rare times I’ve listened to “If You’ve Got Trouble “. I don’t necessarily like it, but it’s not like one of those things that made me go “please give me those 3 minutes of my life back”, like I’ve felt with far too many songs.

Maybe if no one knows the lyrics then someone could change the song.

That happened when I chose Revolution 9 . But I don’t think there are many songs like that. I seriously don’t think there’s a problem with listening to the song, to be honest.

The problems with ‘Revolution 9 ‘ are that there is no agreed consensus on a transcript of the recording so there will be eternal arguments correction and queries, hardly anyone knows them anyway, and its not a song.
I’d suggest listening is ok (tho not desirable and should not be encouraged) but looking them up is definitely not. One reason for not looking is that a number of online lyric sites are wrong so if you do copy them over then you can still post the line incorrectly; another is to go directly to the source and it might also encourage folk to listen to songs they don’t know that well.
The game should be based on and demonstrate your knowledge of the songs however it shouldn’t be detrimental to the players and stop them participating.

I think that when you pick a song to play with, you should know the lyrics.

Yes, Revolution 9 is probably the only composition that’s like that. Listening is ok if the thread is dead and someone wants to revive it.
EDIT: Starry, I don’t know the lyrics to Revolution 9 , but the truth is I hadn’t thought that far.

You should do but not everyone does; if it pushes folk back to the song to hear it then I dont see the problem tho its far more preferable if they do not. Far better that than they take 3 seconds to jump to a lyric site and just copy and paste whatever is written there.

I cast my vote for people being able to listen to a song in order to play the game. Great learning tool.

Though at that point, is it a game anymore if people are just reciting what they hear instead of what they know?
Also from Joe’s new game rules
Edit: also, for the love of Epstein, please ensure that the games involve a degree of skill!
Repeating after the Beatles when you are playing them isn’t very skillful.
I think there are other threads that are able to be used as Beatles song learning tools.

The ideal is that folk do not listen to the song, if at all possible wait for another to post. However if they do not know the song and want to play then go listen to instead of going to a song lyric thread and cutting and pasting. That is what we are saying.
This is going in circles. If we cannot get agreement then maybe its better that the game is locked.
Also Joe’s request for the games to involve skill is not new, it was posted almost a year ago.

The “lock this lock that” argument is getting a little too tiring, IMO. It seems like it’s the only solution that is coming up these days if someone is not satisfied. It’s just a game, and it’s meant to be enjoyed, first and foremost.
Anyway, the forum is made up of big enough fans which makes it unlikely for them to not know the lyrics to most of the songs. In case of obscure songs, such as the one that’s going on at present, for a time no one was responding for nearly two days, and in such cases, if a person who doesn’t know wants to revive the thread, then it’s better for them to listen to it, and respond. That’ll make the others respond and we can keep it going.
