A note on discussions of an adult nature

I wanted to put something in this section about adult discussions, whether about sex, drugs or other subjects that aren’t necessarily suitable for children. We have a broad age range of forum members, from around 11 to 60+, and this is about the younger ones.

It’s inevitable that some people may find themselves in a discussion that might not be appropriate for their age. The broad forum policy is this: you’re all welcome here. Please discuss whatever you like. Don’t be crude; be mature about it. Try not to provoke or be inflammatory towards others. Debate and discuss but don’t be obnoxious.

If an 11-year-old is reading about sex and drugs, and they or a parent thinks the discussion is inappropriate, that is not the fault of anyone here. I have kids of my own, so I sympathise, but children using the internet unsupervised are not the responsibility of anyone apart from their carers. Moderators are not babysitters.

If a discussion on sex or drugs is distasteful to you please click on another thread or do something else. We will not shut down or censor a legitimate discussion simply because some children may be reading. Nor will those discussions be labelled NSFW or 18+ (as has been suggested).

This is not an adult website, but people are free to discuss Two Virgins , Two Junkies, sexuality, religion, or use expletives when not gratuitous. The threads on these subjects we’ve had (example) have been mature and mindful of others, so I’d like that to continue. Please use helpful titles when starting new ones.

As a final word, some of the most mature and insightful comments we’ve had on this forum have been from people 16 and under. Young Beatles fans are some of the greatest people on the planet. Yay.

Has this been a problem lately? I haven’t seen any thread on here (and granted, I’m not on here as much as others are for various reasons) where someone’s screaming how inappropriate it is or how immature it is, or have delved into name-calling and all of that jazz. Compared to other blogs and forums of this nature, this place is almost a kind of save haven and the miniscule few numbskulls we’ve had on here (the guy who had that “awful experience” at a Paul McCartney concert is one that comes to mind) are either weeded out quickly or don’t contribute any more than a relative few posts.

It’s been suggested that we have a tag for certain topics. We’ve always had young people on the forum, I just wanted to be completely clear about the policy.

Most discussions are very innocuous, which is why people might be shocked or surprised if they stray beyond the family-friendly realm. So this is mainly a heads-up that it might happen.
