Hello again fellow Beatlemaniacs, I thought of another “game” that we might enjoy. Think of twelve songs you love, songs not written/performed by The Beatles, and make a list (I’ll go first). I hope many of you like the idea. PS: Oh, yeah, well, each time I start a thread somebody has started something similar already, sorry if that’s the case…

There are plenty of songs i adore that are non-Beatles, many by the more well known artists, many others not. @Oudis, would it be ok to not have this as a game, i’d love it to be an ongoing thread i can add to as times go on.
Recently rediscovered The Flying Pickets a capella cover of ‘When You’re Young And In Love‘ which we had the 7″ vinyl record of when we were kids. I played it over and over on the record player and its every bit as good as i remember it to be.
One of my favourite tracks is by an artist i know nothing else about, i found it as a free sample track on a new laptop i had. Great sentiments and something i would love to do. Rosie Thomas’ Sell All My Things. I need to check out her other material.
And finally for now one of my favourite tracks from the 80’s; ‘Hold Me Now‘ by The Thompson Twins. Came across this about 6 months ago after not hearing it for years, played it frequently for an age.

It’s fun? And because Oudis put a number (12) on the songs so that’s kind of a rule, like games need.
But it would work as a normal thread as mmm proposed.
I need to think before adding here. I saw the thread when it was first posted and I’m still trying to think of my favorite non-Beatles songs. I’m so indecisive!

Do what you want with this thread; I only thought it was an opportunity to know the forum members’ taste in music other than The Beatles. Maybe it would work better outside the games area of the forum, I don’t know, and yes, making it an ongoing conversation would be great, that was my intention all the time… And I think it’s always good to ask people about their favorite songs, or series, or movies, just to make them think.

Offline I’ve heard ‘When You’re Young And In Love’ @meanmistermustard, thanks for the link. Great voices, great arrangements, a well-composed song although it didn’t “touch” me personally. But thanks for turning this thread into a conversation. I think the idea is precisely that we listen to what other people listen to and thus expand our musical horizons. I’ve also listened to Rosie Thomas; great lyrics, I relate to them as well (in fact years ago I did what the song describes).

Offline More of the songs that i love.
Stay (I Missed You) by Lisa Loeb. Love the vocal and the style of the delivery, never ever get bored of hearing it. And one song where i find the video only adds to the song.
Have posted before that i’m not a fan of “if you leave me my life will be over and i might as well drink a bottle of bleach and jump in the oven with it turned up as high as possible for there will be no point in living” or “with your love the world and everything in it will be rosy and every day will be filled with sunshine” type songs – it’s one reason why Paul’s “On The Way’ is one of his best songs (in my opinion), one of my favourites by anyone actually. And the same reason is why i adore Lynn Anderson’s ‘Rose Garden‘, plus that gorgeous guitar line that keeps cropping in.
Kendall Paynes ‘Happy’ (no video available online and the lyrics are wrong). No one i know likes her that much and she isn’t well known at all but Kendall is easily my favourite artist after the Beatles, i could type a list going into double figures of the songs of her’s i can play over and over. ‘Happy’ would be right up near the top or waving the flag. A song called ‘Happy’ that is about family turmoil.

Offline Pretty much anything by Pink Floyd and Tame Impala. I’ve kind of expanded my horizons from The Beatles recently which is why I haven’t been on here as much – but I still do love them. Me and my granddad are saving up to get me a Rickenbacker for my birthday, damn it!
Anyway, those are my other favourite bands and I aspire to be like them (as well as The Beatles). I’ve taken influences from them all and you’d probably notice them straight away.

Offline I will, “play.” I would predict that you’re either quite young or old by including “Smells like Teen Spirit.” Great song, of course but I still require another 10 years before I want to hear it again… It’s right up there with, “Losing My Religion” on the heard it way too many times list.
Here are a couple artists that I like. Have seen both live this past year, and would definately recommend them.

Offline Here are three more acts that are among my current favorites that I’ve seen live in the past couple years.
Courtney Barnett – Video doesn’t at all go with the song, which while amusing is a bit of a let down.
Alt J – from their first album An Awesome Wave. My favorite of 2012.
Afghan Whigs – First album in over 15 years. Saw them in the 90’s and a few months back. They haven’t lost it.
