Hello all. As part of the endless bloody tinkering that we (the mods and I) insist on doing here, we’ve decided to move the forum games from All Together Now (the non-Beatles section) into Yesterday and Today (the general Beatles area).
We’re also introducing a new rule: all games should be Beatles themed in some way. We’ve had too many random games with no focus, and we wanted to rein it in a little. We don’t want to stop anyone’s fun, but we do want to focus on the core purpose of this place, which is to be a Beatles forum first and foremost.
We did consider shutting down the games altogether, but knew that wouldn’t be a popular choice. And it was pointed out that they can actually be helpful to new fans who are discovering The Beatles. So limiting the games to Beatles-themed ones seemed like a sensible compromise.
Edit: also, for the love of Epstein, please ensure that the games involve a degree of skill! The last-letter game is an example of something we should probably avoid, where it goes on for page after page but doesn’t really add anything.
I hope that’s OK with the majority here. We’ll have to lock and eventually cull some of the now-off-topic games, but feel free to start more Beatles-themed ones.

What will you do with old non Beatles games? Will they be locked or moved to All Together now?
(This isn’t an Aprils fools joke I’m assuming?)

It’s not an April Fool, though the timing could be better!
I don’t mind them continuing as long as they’re Beatles-themed from now on. I might lock some of them. I’ve already done so with the Person Above Me thread, which seemed to be more about forum personalities than music. Others will be easier to make Beatles-only.

Are some of the music themed ones that aren’t Beatles still okay? Like the Turn It up or down thread?

Joe in the thread said to keep it Beatles from now on.
How far will the Beatlesification of this forum go? Will this be all the change for now?

I’ve never really been a fan of the forum games, but I know some people like them. I definitely prefer the ones that take some skill – rather than things like the last letter game, which seems a bit pointless (page after page of song titles which don’t really go anywhere). But that’s personal preference. It becomes more of a problem when the bulk of the latest updates are non-Beatles games posts. That’s why I closed the Heal/Hurt section.
In general terms, I don’t mind All Together Now being for non-Beatles discussions, but they still have to be interesting! If it looks like people are likely to be put off visiting the forum then I have a problem. I’d rather this site was predominantly Beatles-based rather than anything-goes, but I’m not about to enforce a quota. As ever, when it looks like things are heading the wrong way we’ll try to nudge it back on track.

My own opinion – it’s a shame.
For me, part of this forum has always been its social aspect. It seems as if that is being clamped down on.
It seems strange to comment that the forum is “everyone’s”, and then have only four people decide on such a wide-ranging change to what is and isn’t acceptable. There’s only really a couple of games I play regularly, but one of those is now off my list (bye-bye Baker’s Dozen).
I just hope not too many more of the social elements of the forum will be denied us.

The Baker’s Dozen can still be played just using Beatles topics.
Maybe for the next forum change we have an poll where people can debate the decisions (But the mods and Joe don’t have to go with the popular opinion) so that this forum can be more like everyone’s forum so everyone can voice their option on a change before it happens.

Yeah, I realise there’s a bit of a double standard there. The forum is everyone’s, but it’s not an anarchy. I still need to set the framework which allows the forum to get better all the time. Nothing’s decided without a series of agonised back-and-forth emails.
The Baker’s Dozen is still open, it’s just a Beatles-themed game after the current Rolling Stones round.

It depends on what the game is on whether it remains open. Joe has already posted that the Bakers Dozen will continue but it should remain Beatles focused. Much of the ATN forum will remain so the social side of discussions will remain (we dont want to lose the community feel) but it is a Beatles forum so its only right that the vast percentage of the content should be Beatles focused.

For me, what I loved about the Baker’s Dozen was its variety (even AD40’s bleedy Pokemon up to a point). Without that variety of topics, it doesn’t appeal to me. Too quickly it will become attempts at finding new ways to do the same old lists. Just my opinion on why I’ve made my last visit there though.

I guess I’m in the minority.
I think off-topic sections of any forum should be about anything the participants want, not just what a few people find amusing (as long as they are not illegal / obscene etc etc). One person’s banal is another person’s amusing and entertaining.
Either do them properly or don’t do them at all, otherwise it all becomes way too arbitrary.
So count me in as another who won’t be partaking in the games section any more.

I think it’s an outrageous decision –sorry for saying it bluntly. It was pure joy for me to post non-Beatles songs in the “up or down” game, and listen to what others had posted. It was great to recommend soundtracks that weren’t “Help ”. It was wonderful to use the Baker’s Dozen to talk about literature and art. What about “Song structure analysis”, will we have to analyze only Beatles songs? I fear that with this resolution everything will be dumbed down to “Which of The Beatles is the cutest’” and stuff like that. Good Lord, many of us are already in our forties and fifties and may find a Beatles-only forum boring, no matter how we enjoy their music. It was important for me, at least, to talk about a wider range of topics. My guess is that I’ll be visiting the BB less often from now on (and please don’t be predictable, don’t say “OK, if that’s your decision”)

Well, I said I was having a break but I felt I had to chime in here.
I have found some of the replies to our concerns incredibly condescending.
I also found this comment revealing:
“In general terms, I don’t mind All Together Now being for non-Beatles discussions, but they still have to be interesting!” Which means, however you try to wrap it in marketing speak, conversations have to be interesting to the landlord and the majority of mods or they face the axe. Bad luck if a number of other forum members are having a conversation or game they enjoy, even if it is not offending anyone, if the powers that be find it trite or banal it is gone.
I for one am not going to waste my time trying to work out what someone else finds interesting before I post.

A mod rule is that posts are not to be deleted unless they are offensive, blatant spam, requested by that poster, or are part of a thread clear-up when it has gotten either murky and/or badly off-topic (and no doubt a couple of others i forget). Posts will and are NOT deleted just because a mod or Joe does not find it interesting or thinks its banal. If they were half the forum would be gone. A hell of a lot of conversations take place before posts and/or thread are moved or deleted, one reason being that the very large majority of posts are highly valued because folk take time to make them; ones about deleting posts and thread are far shorter as the answer 99.9% of the time is always a very large resounding NO!! (we’ve even limited how many moves and merges are done as it can irritate folk). However there are places to post them already in place, abundant places, which mean that some conversations do not need their own threads, that is what we try to control in ATN so that folk dont have to burrow down to find the Beatles conversations.
If folk still want to discuss the 13 greatest authors to come from Italy between 1285 and 1600, feel free, but instead of making it a game in ‘Baker Dozens’ where you list them discuss them or do the same thing in either ‘what are you currently reading’, ‘impossible to derail’ or a handful of other threads that would work. If you want to form a discussion with someone else who posts here either utilise one of the many threads that will suit it or do it in a PM instead of creating one specifically for it. So is it that bad or unreasonable to tidy up and put that a little more in place?
As for banal and trite, heck, you dont get to nearly 13,000 posts without having contributed loads of those. God knows how low my post count would be without those, I mean I recently posted about slippers and socks.
No harm or offence was meant in the move but if there was all of us mods apologise, it was never meant; and already Joe has said he will give advance notice in the future before any major changes are made.
