Not to mention the decapitated dolly on Paul’s shoulder, and he’s covering up his teeth with his lips as he smiles…Off track. Sorry. LOL!!!
Back on the actual subject, I think my mom has a second state butcher. I have been afraid to check it though because I don’t want to wreck it. Is there a definitive way of telling if this is indeed a second state (“trunk” cover pasted on) ?
A former co-worker had a copy of both. On his copy of the pasted on trunk cover, you could actually see the butcher cover underneath. It was very faint, but you could see it. Probably due to age?

^ I’m jealous, if you were ever in dire-straits for money and were willing to part with your album- you’d get some decent money for a second state record, depending on its condition.
My most valuable record is an Irish pressing of ‘The White Album ‘- it didn’t even come with the postcards or posters
To the person who asked about how to identify whether it’s a second state or not, according to Wikipedia it “can be identified if Ringo’s black V-neck shirt from the original cover can be seen through the paste-over to the right of the trunk lid (in alignment with the word “Today” from the album title)”.

That was me. I’ll have to look at mom’s again, it’s been awhile since I got her box of vinyl out. Mind you I’m terribly myopic and my sight is horrible. But I’ll look for Ringo’s shirt showing through in that area. It’s so much older now, it might even be easier.

I hope this is on topic, but was the butcher cover a larger signal in saying they didn’t really want to be seen as these cute little cuddly mop-tops anymore, given that Dylan said that he looked at the cover and said, “I get it. You don’t want to be seen as cute anymore.” ??

I should have double checked that here.

@O Boogie, @Into the Sky with Diamonds seems to have had that same thought. Where did you come across the idea? In a book or website?

With regards to that article, I’ve heard that it was Paul who pushed for it to be the album cover? And maybe John wanted it as well while George thought it was gross and stupid (or was it retrospectively?). That article isn’t entirely correct, and it mixes many things together.
I agree it’s mainly speculation, but I don’t think it’s way off. One could argue that they were trying to shake off the cute image with the Playboy interview.

I’ve actually seen two butcher covers so far in my lifetime; each at a different record store I’ve visited.
Unfortunately, one of them is for sure not for sale and the other one is also probably not for sale.
And from what I’ve seen of them they both looked to be in at least fairly good condition, too! I would’ve just loved to add at least one of them to my collection…

I’ve seen a couple copies of Yesterday And Today with the butcher cover for sale, but they’re all the kind that have the final cover pasted over the butcher cover.
About eleven or twelve years ago, my aunt gave me what was left of her record collection. I pulled out her copy of Yesterday And Today. She said to me “don’t bother checking whether it’s a butcher cover. Trust me. I’ve already done it.” Sure enough, there was a part on the top left corner of the record where someone had clearly tried to take the cover off using their fingernails.

That could be part of it, but my understanding is the cover was meant to be a protest over Capitol’s butchering of The Beatles’ UK albums to this point. The article was correct in regard to their 6 UK albums being hacked up and reassembled into 9 Capitol albums. I do not doubt that Brian was told by the band to tell Capitol that the cover was a protest of sorts over the war. They would have been fools to tell Capitol that the cover was a protest against them. That would have meant the cover would never be released at all.
Just as you cautioned, my thoughts contain speculation as well. It is fun to talk about.

If you still have it, that cover would be priceless in regard to remembering a beloved family member. Too cool. According to the last paragraph of Joe’s article on the album’s release, your aunt wasn’t the only one with a heightened sense of curiosity.

Interesting. The two I’ve seen didn’t have the final cover pasted on; they just had the butcher cover and nothing else.

I do recall that, mmm. However, I do not recall the source or who said it. Any ideas?
No idea who it was first put up the theory, @Zig. It would have been sometime in the ’70s, and probably a journalist. By the time I started reading books in the ’80s, the myth was common currency. There was no explanation (oops! Forgot I was writing this! Been off doing all sorts of other things. Even been down the shop before they shut at nine thirty. Sorry!) given for the picture at the time (sorry, had to pause again. Just back from the shop and feel like a puff, so had to roll one, filthy habit. Don’t do as I do, just say no.) and so ’70s writers came up with theories, and among which it being a comment on what Capitol were doing to their albums or a statement about the Vietnam war were two of the most popular.
These two myths spread as lore through multiple ’80s books and documentaries, with occasional help from Paul on the Vietnam version, until Bob Whitaker finally described his vision for a tri… (again, apologies. Just had to pop to @Joe’s page on the photo session, because I can see the word, but I just can’t spell it! I knew Joe was bound to have it.) triptych that didn’t come off.
Once Whitaker explained what the hell it was he was trying to do, those theories created purely to plug the hole were quickly abandoned.

Hello everyone I just joined today.
I found this page doing a search on the butcher cover.
I just bought a 2nd state a couple of weeks ago and when I was looking at them on ebay I couldn’t see the “black V” on some of the pics.
So I would save the picture and edit it in Adobe Photoshop to try and bring out the “V”.
Well I was really surprised by what I saw,I could see Ringo pretty good on the cover underneath. Here is a picture I took of my cover,I used the brightness and contrast and lighten and darken options.
I did the pictures 3 times switching between, brightness and contrast and lighten and darken.
you can see how the more you edit the better you can bring out Ringo.
So don’t go peeling you’re mother’s cover, try this instead LOL.
I just wanted to share this to help people looking to verify a butcher cover.
Of course it depends on how the picture was taken,(lighting, glare, etc.) as how good the editing works.
I posted a video on youtube, showing these and other pictures I’ve done,It’s titled. Revealing the Beatles Butcher Cover with Photoshop.
