About smoking and eating i think he had just finished eating and is just with the classical cigarrette after lunch/meal/dinner whatever … I think he might be using a toothpick in that pic
About his curly hair … maybe it is due to the humidity of the place? or maybe he just got a curly hairdo for a while…

That makes sense SW. In the old days when just about everybody smoked, it was not unusual to light up right at the table and use your plate as an ashtray.
I found this picture in an article about a ski resort in Japan (Karuizawa) that John and Yoko visited many times throughout the years. Lots of interesting stuff…
