#7. During the mid-late 70’s until probably the mid-80’s, I collected the re-issued versions of this fanzine. It had the original ‘Beatles Book’ magazine as issued in 1960’s inside ‘outer pages’ of current Beatle news and activities. The early issues, I remember, included a re-cap of J, P, G & R’s solo careers, which I can remember some of the critique and also a review of 33 1/3 and ‘interview’ with George, who was very happy with the album!

You could buy booklet files to keep them safe and in good condition. I haven’t seen them for years, but I think I still have them in the house, boxed away, somewhere?!

#8. Nice Albo, I love those types of publications. Those look much more sophisticated than what was available in the US 1964. This is the first time teen magazine 16 featured The Beatles on the cover.

a-hard-days-night-ringo-8 Yup, that was their basic layout for the 2 or 3 years that 16 was popular. Sometimes the teen mags would have the Beatles compete in a popularity contest:

Well, that cover’s better than the other one although Mike Nesmith might not agree.

It would be wonderful, but I’m stuck in Australia until the end of the virus / the end of time / the end of restrictions.

Well JW, since the original Papa Nez crew isn’t active on the forum, maybe we can pool their transportation $$ into a Quantas redeye. You could be in SF by sunrise john-lennon-salute_gif. Actually I’m going to be in that area this weekend to try and beat the 100d temps in the bay area. Maybe I’ll try to hit Sand City and take a pic of his biz.

The last photo is great … looked like a great early 70s band! It’s a shame Henry and Denny left before Wings hit the ‘big time’ with Band On The Run , but Henry in particular didn’t like being used as a session musician, so not sure if ‘Wings’ were ever really a band, even if Paul allowed the others a song or two on subsequent albums? (Henry was born in the same county as I live in N. Ireland, although I never met him. I know he gave guitar lessons, though whether he taught much or spent the time telling his stories etc I’m not sure! lol)

#11. Anyway, I remember buying this issue of ‘Q’ magazine … I always bought a music magazine in the airport when going on holiday, so it was probably then and it was always good finding one featuring The Beatles!

a-hard-days-night-ringo-8 Hey, I have that issue of Q magazine too! It’s such a striking portrait.

#12. Surprised this one hasn’t been posted yet. I’m not a huge fan of Annie Leibovitz’s work to be honest, but I think the timing of this issue, the fact that there is no text other than the logo, the paradigm and power shift of having a clothed woman and naked man, all combine to make this so iconic.

Jan. 17, 1977. Oh, how I miss the days when a Beatle’s reunion was a common subject of discussion.

Nov. 7, 1969 This one was published at the height of the PID hoax. LIFE assigned a reporter to find Paul, which he finally did at his farm in Scotland. The reporter returned with this picture proving Paul and family were safe and sound.

Unfortunately, the cover further fueled the conspiracy folks. If you hold the cover up to the light, the car ad on the reverse makes it appear that Paul has been decapitated.

Jan. 9,1968 In those days I loved all things psychedelic. This is actually the last cover I recall collecting. I once had an entire photo album of mag covers, probably 50 double sided pages. When I turned 18, I left the US mainland for almost a decade. I stored everything I had collected during my teenage years at my parents house ,including lots of Beatle memorabilia and many first issue comic books including Spiderman (not to mention my drawings, poems, pictures, letters) 3 months after I left my parents separated and soon divorced. When they sold the house they tossed all my stuff (my mom said it just looked like a bunch of junk). Fortunately my brother grabbed my record collection, but that was it.

Aug. 1, 1966 I love the images from this photoshoot. If at the time I had any questions about my sexual orientation, this picture probably helped resolve them.

May 1, 1965

Music Life is considered the greatest music magazine ever published in Japan. The magazine’s editor Hoshika Rumikoin became the first Japanese journalist to interview The Beatles in London and then once again when the band came to Japan in 1966. Rumiko even appeared on the cover of Music Life in 1965 along with John, Paul, George and Ringo dressed in traditional Japanese attire. When her interview with the Fab Four was published the magazine sold 250,000 copies, a far cry from their usual distribution of 50,000-70,000 copies per issue.
