I bought a poster of the Beatles in Paris, but it arrived damaged and the seller refunded my money. I bought what I thought was the same poster from another seller, and noticed something odd. In one poster Ringo has a hat, in one he does not. My question is this, which one is photo shopped? Second, why would anyone do this? The version with the hat is the most common out there. I can’t find a source for the original photo. Anyone know?

Having never seen this photo before and only judging by the look of it, the one with the hat is photoshopped.

It seems likely to me that the whole picture has been heavily photoshopped, including the background.
In the early afternoon of 15 January 1964 John, Paul and George strolled along the Champs-Élysées accompanied by the British Press, having arrived in Paris from London the previous day. Ringo, fog-bound in Liverpool, did not arrive in Paris until that evening.
They soon retreated to the hotel because of the attention they were getting.
I would suggest that a shot from this walkabout has been edited, with the background added, and also Ringo added.
If you look at them, all are in the same moment of walking forward, yet the background to the left switches from two people walking away, to one woman looking on. While the hat that Ringo is “wearing” in the second version, appears to be Murray the K’s hat (seen here being worn by Paul a few weeks later):
The whole picture would appear to be a photoshop creation, probably two attempts by the same person, with the second being the more widespread because that was the version the creator preferred.

RN’s theory gains additional traction by reason of the fact that you can’t see the Eiffel Tower from the Champs-Élysées. If the lads were really just walking about on the Champs, the Tower would not be in the background behind them. Someone had to add that foggy background to the photo.
I say in speeches that a plausible mission of artists is to make people appreciate being alive at least a little bit. I am then asked if I know of any artists who pulled that off. I reply, 'The Beatles did'.

I have a Beatles journal that uses the photo with the hat (without ‘The Beatles’ in the corner) on the back of the page that separates the last lined page from the back cover. The front cover of the journal looks like this:
I do believe I bought it from an HMV a year or two ago. On the inside of the back cover it says ‘2015 Apple Corps Ltd.’ and all of that copyright jargen, so it seems licensed.
How interesting.

I grabbed a print of this image at work at 90% off. The horizontal line is from a slight fold because the shrinkwrap decided to contract a bit more than usual. It’s not creased, though. Sorry for that flash in the second photo, it’s possible that Ringo could have had a hat edited onto his head. Not sure why, but can anyone tell?

The hat was definitely edited in. The hat looks to sloppy to be real, while the one without the hat looks untouched. It’s possible the hat was photoshopped out, but our choices are…
A decent/okay photoshopper photoshopped the hat in
or
A expert super duper amazing photoshopper photoshopped the hat out
The former is a more common type of person and is the more likely scenario.

The hat is definitely photoshopped on, and also, being able to see all four closer up, John’s position looks very weird in relation to Paul and George as well.
I’m still of the opinion that the picture is a composite.

Agreed, it looks like it’s thrown on his head. Doesn’t fit right at all. Here’s a couple more photos without flash.

I’d guess the picture is simply a tribute/memento of their visit to Paris in 1964. As said above; Paul, John and George are from when they walked around Paris without Ringo who has been superimposed to make it a group image; the Eiffel tower being added as it is an iconic symbol of France. Why the added hat? Probably height reasons but it looks stupid.
It’s all clearly fake and it wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest if Apple were behind it.
