Love the originals here, the acoustic guitars and more depressed atmosphere suggest they were listening to lots of Dylan while under the influence and it definitely makes for a better record. I love how both this and A Hard Day’s Night were released in such close proximity to one-another yet retain both very distinct and different identities.

Brilliant. Little Girl and I were doing something very similar to this… we started with Help ! but also did this album. We only got to Baby’s In Black though.

I’m one of those who thinks “Mr Moonlight ” should have been left off in favour of “Leave My Kitten Alone “. Yeah perhaps the recording of Kitten could have been better but I just think it’s a better song.
The rest of the album though I think is pretty cool and I think my fav track is actually “What You’re Doing “. Some of the harmonies on the album are just wonderful 🙂

Lose Kansas City /Hey Hey Hey then. My issue with Leave My Kitten Alone is that it doesn’t fit the style of the album, and I suspect that’s why it was left off. Should have been a B-side.

Now I'm a confused bassist ukulele guitar synthesizer kazoo penguin everyone who is definitely not @Joe. This has been true for 2016 & 2017 but I may have to get more specific in the future.

It’s the weakest thing on the first side. Maybe we could replace some random side two thing like Eight Days A Week .

I dont like either Kansas City or Eight Days A Week . However I agree that Leave My Kitten Alone doesnt really suit the album – would be similar to Dizzy Miss Lizzy scaring your ears at the end of ‘Help !’.

Me too……..
When Abbey Rd opened it’s doors to us evil smelling peasants in the 80’s……..I was there. Drum kit…..Guitars set up……..4 track mixing desks. I seem to remember wax figures in white lab-coats but that might be my imagination.
What I remember vividly was how fantastic, I’m Looking Through You , ‘While My Guitar Gently Weeps ‘ (Anthology versions) sounded coming over the studio speakers……..And how disappointed I was to finally hear that unreleased ‘holy grail’…….. ‘Leave My Kitten Alone ‘ More like a ‘holy growl’ I thought at the time.
All the Albums were there……I picked up Beatles For Sale with a little Abbey Road sticker on it because it was the only LP I hadn’t ever gotten round to buying……Took me all that time! It’s still my least favourite………. But it contains that little treasure on it……….You know the one.

I think Mr. Moonlight is just fine. Not great, but not awful either. It has that classic John Lennon scream at the beginning and good harmonies. It does however, have probably the worst solo in any Beatles song.

By this time so many people would have heard well-meaning relatives playing their expensive organ in the parlour with that beat and playing exactly that kind of solo, it’s a cultural reference. I’m convinced the song is a private joke. Kansas City on the other hand, is Paul singing really well but the song is meh.

I used to actively dislike this album, but now I have an affection for it. It’s a bit too cover-heavy for my tastes – and the covers sound more like throwaways as opposed to them owning the song (likeTwist and Shout and Money). In particular I think the echoy reverb on George’s vocals on Everybody’s Trying To Be My Baby ruins that song and makes it a weak closer. I don’t mind Mr Moonlight that much – it’s not a favourite but for me it’s not as cringe-worthy as Maxwell’s Silver Hammer .
Covers aside, the originals are definitely underrated, by which I mean they were underrated by me for many years. No Reply , Every Little Thing , Eight Days A Week , What You’re Doing – these are all brilliant songs that I ignored for ages. What a plum. If there hadn’t been a rule against singles being on albums, the inclusion of I Feel Fine and She’s A Woman would probably have made it a stronger collection, but it is what it is.
My first girlfriend’s mum was a big Beatles fan and this was her favourite album. I still wouldn’t go that far, but I understand more why it could be someone’s favourite album nowadays.

I’ve always liked it. I agree, though, Everybody’s Trying To Be My Baby is a rather weak closer… I wish What You’re Doing ended it instead, that would be great.

If it switched places with Kansas City /Hey Hey Hey, then the front half of the album would be all around fantastic.
