I’m more disappointed his name isn’t John Cheese.

It should be, his grandfather’s name was Cheese but John’s father thought it was stupid and so changed it to Cleese.
In tribute to his father’s real surname, John names a lot of his pets (predominately cats) after cheese.

Well I went to Yellow Sub this morning, I haven’t seen it in at least 2 years and I forgot how barmy some parts were.
I really enjoyed seeing it and if I lived next to the cinema, I would have gone to see it a second time in the evening. The sound was fabulous and some of the songs (It’s All Too Much , Only A Northern Song , All You Need Is Love and Hey Bulldog ) sounded fantastic, I also enjoyed being able to hear George singing in the Yellow Submarine chorus for the first time, he’s slightly out of tune and sounding completely bored.
Furthermore, the visuals were fab in particular the Sea Of Holes made me have to avert my gaze because of the intensity of the white and black contrast. The colours really popped as well.
I got my 50th Anniversary commemorative crap (including my stickers woohoo), when I’m on my phone I’ll post photos of them but if someone posts before me, I don’t mind.
Lastly, the cinema was an experience. I was a wee bit late getting in (I didn’t miss the start of the film) but I was running around looking for the screen. The ticket office is outdoors which was fine today, it was a nice summer’s day but in winter and if it was raining, I’d imagine you wouldn’t bother queuing and would just skip going to the cinema. The screens are weird and difficult to find. Yellow Sub was in Screen 1, I went upstairs and found Screen 2 and 3, I then decided to see where some of the stairs went, the answer is nowhere. There are literally stairs that were built that lead to nowhere (now I know where the €8 million went). Everything is concrete and bare-bones, not an inch of carpet or colour in the place. Some of the screens were sponsored by celebrities- the most famous being Brendan Gleeson and Gabriel Byrne.
In saying that, while the interior and exterior of the cinema looks like it was built in 1970’s Ukraine, the screens are quite nice. The seats are a bit too close and I would hate to be sitting in the first 5 rows but the seats are very comfortable, the lighting is perfect and the sound is top-notch.
I will rate it overall as a 6/10- marks lost for a very ugly building.

Hadn’t seen the film since it was last on T.V. (I think Channel 4 showed it when it last was released on DVD) and that actually made it a far more enjoyable viewing; laughing at how stupid or deliberately bad some of the jokes were but then really clever ones come along so you don’t get to the point of thinking it’s lame. Had completely forgotten parts of the film and there is so much going on, especially when the Beatles are singing, that you either miss bits of the songs or what’s happening on screen. ‘Only A Northern Song ‘ looked amazing, the whole animation was stunning and really suits the song. The music sounded incredible, the 4k artwork breathtaking.
I think you lose so much when you start pulling films apart, especially when 50 years old – does it hold up, how does it look, is it worth bothering to see having seen it 30 times before – so the most important part of this post is that the film is really good. If it looks like dragging a song kicks in, if it’s in danger of getting too lost in music the story kicks back in. It’s wonderfully balanced 90 minute cartoon.
One note is that the ‘Baby You’re A Rich Man ‘ section remains “lost”.

Really? His voice alaways was audible for me. Best part of the chorus by the way. Like Ringo’s in “The continuing story of Bungallow Bill”

Saw it last night in New York. The movie has definitely stood the test of time.
We took our son and three of his twenty-something friends and I think they had a great time. The crowd sang along at the end when “All Together Now ” plays over the credits. Funny how that song – definitely not in the Beatles’ Top 100 – sounds so good in that setting.

I do concur. It’s like all the best things about the psychedelic Sixties, in a package that doesn’t feel dated because it’s still interesting.

Going Monday morning.
For some reason our Theatre is playing the A Hard Day’s Night movie before Yellow Submarine . I’m gonna skip AHDN since I’ve seen it a million times, but have never completely watched the YS movie.

What were your thoughts on Yellow Submarine ?
I like it myself but I think because there isn’t much of a plot it could’ve been better maybe as a short film instead. The animation is stunning though, I’ve honestly never seen anything like it. Must be amazing to watch up there on the big screen.

I watched this with my 7 year old son lately, and despite some saying he wouldn’t like it he absolutely loved it and totally ‘got it’. He giggled away through it and loved the music.
After I came back from work the other day he presented me with a picture he did inspired by the film, it was so lovely and i was so touched I’m sure i felt something in my eye….
No doubt at all the beatles music will continue to reach future generations.

I’m really not sure what the appropriate thread to put this in is, but I came across this neat piece of art based on the Only A Northern Song sequence on Reddit and it was too cool not to share.
