Airing on ITV tonight (Wednesday 11th November) in the UK from 8pm to 10pm.

No doubt there will be some discussion on it so might as well be a thread for it.

Here’s the press release

The Nation’s Favourite Beatles Number One

The Beatles were a musical sensation like no other. Since exploding onto the music scene in the early 60s, the band has had an unparalleled musical and cultural impact on Britain and the world for over fifty years.

The Nation’s Favourite Beatles Number One will tell the stories behind some of the greatest Beatles songs ever. With interviews from Beatles’ insiders including musicians, friends, fellow performers and celebrity fans, we’ll hear about the stories behind the Fab Four’s best-loved hits.

These are the stories behind the 27 songs that reached number one here and in the U.S – from She Loves You to Let it Be – as the show hears from the people who were there to witness in person the extraordinary rise and rise of The Beatles.

Across 120 minutes, this prime-time celebration of the biggest and most influential band the world has ever seen uses archive from a number of sources, including rare and exclusive footage from the Beatles’ company Apple Corps.

Produced by Shiver, ‘The Nation’s Favourite’ format has previously counted down the hits of musical sensations and genres including Abba, Elvis, Queen, and Motown.

The Nation’s Favourite Beatles Number One is commissioned for ITV by Priya Singh, Commissioning Editor, Factual and Richard Klein, Director of Factual.

Commissioning Editor Priya Singh said: “The Beatles are a band that have defined popular culture and music for decades and so we’re thrilled to be celebrating their hits on ITV. Everyone’s got a favourite Beatles number one – but which is yours and which will be the nation’s?”

The programme is executive produced by Mark Robinson and produced by Stephen McGinn and John Piper.

Executive Producer Mark Robinson said: “The Beatles have had more number one singles in the UK than any other band. It’s a tough call to even start predicting what might be voted the nation’s favourite.

“It’s extraordinary to think that The Beatles’ output changed so dramatically within seven years – these are 27 songs that chart that extraordinary Revolution in popular music”.

All the songs from the programme feature on the brand new CD/DVD and CD/Blu-ray releases of The Beatles 1 and the deluxe edition The Beatles 1+. A visual rundown of The Beatles’ number one  records, The Beatles 1 pairs beautifully restored videos for each song  with brand new audio mixes. The Beatles 1+ includes additional bonus material of over 200 minutes of promotional films and videos.

And, if it’s missed tonight, ITV1 are reshowing it between 4:30-6:30pm on Sunday 15 November (which is probably when I shall watch).

It’s bound to be HJ.

Well had a buffering problem as it started………missed about 15 mins sorting out another option…….

Good in the sense that completely missing the placement of about 3 songs kept me in greater suspense as i didn’t know exactly which songs had been eliminated from the list……..

Found it hard to concentrate on as so many memories were being triggered that sent me off on my own revelries………. Even thought of MMM and others at one point when TLAWR popped up quite high in the Nation’s favourite……..I thought I could hear him cursing the screen and the veracity of the parenthood of the nations voters……

There was a still of John with someone commenting on his, ‘Life is very short’, contribution to WCWIO ….where I had a moment of loss.

Anyway…..Good to hear all the praise for the lads.

There’s also the fact that it was skewered by being 27 #1s. So far as I remember, the #1s weren’t that dominant in our poll. Which was surprising in its own way.

What a bunch of contrarians we Forumpudlians are!  Why can’t we recognize the beauty and quality of the number 1s, like the rest of the universe does? a-hard-days-night-paul-7

I say in speeches that a plausible mission of artists is to make people appreciate being alive at least a little bit. I am then asked if I know of any artists who pulled that off. I reply, 'The Beatles did'.

I wonder if some of their earlier number 1’s would have been 1’s back in the day if the people back then had to wait until The Beatles broke up to pick the group’s number ones.

I wonder if the general populace’s vote would be different if the vote was taken on the songs we voted on. EDIT: I suppose we have some recent polls for this information, but it would be interesting to have a poll done like last night’s was.
