The bbc reports that the movie of the book 'The Longest Cocktail Party' is to be made with Michael Winterbottom as director and possibly Johnny Depp as Derek Taylor.

JOHNNY DEPP as DEREK TAYLOR??? Wow…weird. Can't picture him playing that role, or even The Longest Cocktail Party as a movie at all.
"Now and then, though, someone does begin to grow differently. Instead of down, his feet grow up toward the sky. But we do our best to discourage awkward things like that."
"What happens to them?" insisted Milo.
"Oddly enough, they often grow ten times the size of everyone else," said Alec thoughtfully, "and I’ve heard that they walk among the stars."

To be fair it is mentioned that it may be a difficult casting role since Depp is a 48 american whilst Taylor is much younger and british, not that that matters in many films.
It sounds like youre average beatle film to me, one that will be nothing special at all, probably riddled with errors, feature awful cover versions of beatles songs, and have a lot of 'artistic license' – ie lacking in actual fact.

Boy, isnt that the truth? You'd think that with all that has been documented, the errors would be at a minimum. Sadly, that is not always the case.
To the fountain of perpetual mirth, let it roll for all its worth. And all the children boogie.
Have you read the book? It’s brilliant fun, though The Beatles themselves don’t even feature that much. If they get this right it could be good.

Hm, I see no reason to rush to judgement yet – or to assume prematurely that it'll be error-filled. Definitely sounds to me like a much better prospective film than, I dunno, a 3-D remake of “Yellow Submarine “.
Anyway, I like Johnny Depp just fine. (But yeah, somebody way-younger should've been cast.)
GEORGE: In fact, The Detroit Sound. JOHN: In fact, yes. GEORGE: In fact, yeah. Tamla-Motown artists are our favorites. The Miracles. JOHN: We like Marvin Gaye. GEORGE: The Impressions PAUL & GEORGE: Mary Wells. GEORGE: The Exciters. RINGO: Chuck Jackson. JOHN: To name but eighty.

I read an article about the movie a couple days ago and Liam Galleghar is still attached with this film. He said in an interview that no one will be playing the Beatles. They won't be showing up at all in the film.
I'm actually slightly disappointed in that. I sorta how accurate they could get an actor to play a Beatle.
I do think that there will be scenes where like the employees would be running around the office and someone whispers “*insert Beatle name here* is in the building”. They would be like background characters which is interesting because most people will go see this film purely on the fact it's the Beatles. People will expect the Beatles.
Does anyone have suggestions as to whom should Derek if not Johnny?
Well we all shine on like the moon, the stars, and the sun.

If it is as Penny writes then it sounds kind of like the I Wanna Hold Your Hand movie from 1978 when all you saw was the occasional Beatle foot. If it is filmed in such a way that it revolves around Apple and you dont see the Beatles it might in a way make it better as you wouldnt be sitting there shouting “he looks nothing like George!” and “John never said that, get your facts right”. Maybe thats just me.

There's an actor called Ben Whishaw who was recently in a BBC drama, The Hour (which I enjoyed, though reviews were mixed). He was very charismatic on screen and I think he'd make a good Derek Taylor. He's about the right age too. Here's a clip/interview:
He could get the hair right too – have a look at his Wikipedia photo: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ben_Whishaw

I agree, that’s the safest way to go about it. Us Beatle fans are ruthless! It’s impossible for us not to find faults. (The Nowhere Boy and Across The Universe threads prove that, I think.)
I think it's great you're going through a phase,
and I'm awfully glad it'll all be over in a couple

From the Daily Express: Oasis rocker Liam Gallagher has reportedly set his sights on actor Jared Leto to star in the rocker’s upcoming film about the Beatles
The Beady Eye frontman’s film company, 1 Productions, is developing the movie adaptation of Richard DiLello’s 1973 book, The Longest Cocktail Party, and Gallagher is keen to cast the Dallas Buyers Club star, who ironically played John Lennon ‘s killer Mark David Chapman in 2007 drama Chapter 27.
Gallagher is preparing to hold castings in Los Angeles in April (14), and Leto, as well as Before Midnight’s Ethan Hawke, are on the shortlist to star in the movie, according to the The Sun newspaper.
An insider tells the publication, “He knows he’s not going to manage to entice someone like Brad Pitt but he wants high-calibre people who are more on the indie scene of Hollywood. He thinks actors such as Jared and Ethan would be perfect.”
The Longest Cocktail Party details DiLello’s tenure at the Beatles’ Apple company, and covers the band’s peak years from 1968 to the split in 1970.

The film has been scrapped.
‘The Sun‘ (sad having to write that as a source) reports that
…Plans for the movie have now come grinding to a halt after director MICHAEL WINTERBOTTOM and his company Revolution Productions pulled out of the project.
Furthermore, Liam’s production company In 1 Productions Ltd, which he set up with his business partners at fashion label Pretty Green to fund and produce the film, has been quietly dissolved.
A source said: “Liam invested heavily in the film when he bought the rights and was intent on making it happen.
“He commissioned someone to write it, started a production company and got a top director on board in the form of Michael.
“After that, things started to go downhill.
“The script was all wrong and they couldn’t get access to The Beatles’ back catalogue. Now Liam has backed out of the project.
“He has nothing to do with it anymore and his colleague Chris Jonns has taken on the rights with a view to getting it Off The Ground one day without him. The whole process has been a mess.”
Yesterday a rep for Revolution films and Michael Winterbottom, who directed 24 Hour Party People and RUSSELL BRAND’s recent documentary The Emperor’s New Clothes, confirmed: “Revolution are no longer involved in this project.”
Peep Show co-creator JESSE ARMSTRONG, whom Liam paid to write the film’s script, admitted his fears back in 2014, saying: “I don’t know if, or when, it will make it to screen, but I hope it does.”
