I’m reading some comments on Facebook from people who saw it and said it was a waste of money, and that it is just a condensed version of Anthology.
Well if it really is terrible then I am glad watching it on Hulu. The closest theaters showing it are in Mobile and New Orleans. A bit far too see a movie for me. Mobile about an hour east and New Orleans almost two hours west. If was actually Paul and Ringo in person I would go, but not for a movie. Hulu is a lot cheaper anyways.
I hope its good though. I try not to think of others opinions.

Paul is finally getting that nice Liverpudlian craggy older guy look. His bro’s been rocking it for some time now:
Kind of want to age like that but I’m not Liverpudlian nor English
Movie update: still down with flu, going to put the movie off till next week and try and avoid this thread.

I enjoyed every minute of it and didn’t think it was the same as Anthology at all. It really brought the excitement of the Beatles experience in a way I hadn’t seen before. I did notice Paul’s guitar was black and white in a couple of frames but I would never have noticed without it being pointed out here.
Today I showed @Ahhh Girl Yellow Submarine since she hadn’t seen it yet and then we went to a store and each bought some fab items and then we exchanged gifts. A good time was had by all.

After three days on letting it all go here are my thoughts on the film (reminding everyone that I really did enough the film).
- Pre-1964 was basically covered in 1 minute total. We know footage and audio does exist from earlier concerts so where on earth was it?
- Highly US focused; discussion on everywhere else probably wouldn’t add up to 5 minutes. No wonder there is a special Japan edit.
- If there was no footage the period/location was quickly glossed over or totally ignored. Hamburg is where they turned into a great live band yet cough and you miss it being mentioned. Jimmy Nicol wasn’t even mentioned yet appeared more than Pete Best!
- The colourisation didn’t bother me too much but it was entirely pointless and added nothing of any significance or worth. Are Apple still bathing in the reaction to the colouring of ‘All You Need Is Love ‘ in the ‘Anthology’ series and hoping to repeat it? Please will someone tell them to stop.
- Nowhere near enough complete live music featured; you’d struggle to get half an album side compiled. Insanity considering The Beatles were a damn good live band. Maybe that’s why Shea was tacked on afterwards.
- A lot of the studio chatter heard in the film was familiar, maybe small bits here and there were new but the majority is out on boots. New outtake excerpts seemed to come from ‘Sgt Pepper ‘s Lonely Hearts Club Band’ and ‘Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds ‘; ‘Hold Me Tight ‘ may have been different as well (any hope that Apple might have something ready for a 50th ‘Pepper’ box set was killed when the Rooftop concert appeared. We all know we’ll be dusty fossils before the ‘Let It Be ‘ film is officially released).
- To not issue Shea is truly shameful by Apple if they don’t. Why remaster the footage, show it for one night, and then shove it back in the vaults for another 50 years? For f**k sake Apple this is what fans want not remasters and reissues!! It’s not difficult to work out! Put down the tea and biscuits, get off your backsides*, and for once ask some fans instead of your accountants.
- In the cinema you got to see ‘Beatles Jukebox – 20 seconds of a selection of promos before returning to the Premiere. I’d far rather have watched the promos than anyone arriving.
There will things I have missed.
*Apple could go online to gather fan opinion but if they did they would see a lot of disdain and deep irritation for how useless it is so best not.
Note: My points above are meant to be bulleted but are not displaying as such above.

I thought of @parlance during the movie during a scene in Studio Two. There was one of the red chairs like we saw at the Beatles Second Album listening event at the Grammy Museum.

For those who don’t know, there’s a copyright claim over the Shea footage which might be the reason for its omission from the DVD/Blu-ray. The estate of Sid Bernstein are demanding a piece of the pie.

That said, it’d make more sense for the full Shea doc to be released, rather than as an extra to the Ron Howard film. They’d make more money with it as a standalone.

The copyright issue would explain why neither She´s a woman or Everybody´s trying to be my baby was added to the premiere screening. Yes, the sound was improved, but it was advertised just before it started as a “30 minute concert”, which of course it wasn´t. It was difficult to tell whether it was the original sound being used or the partly re-recorded sound. I looked specially at Ringo´s mouth during his song, and it seemed to be the real thing. Maybe they just had access to the original film but had an option to use another sound recording. Time will tell. The film still had the weird edit during “A hard day´s night” where at least two edits have George playing his Gretsch instead of the Rickenbacker which was the guitar being used for that song. I wonder what called for those edits?
The documentary itself was nice, but not much more. What meanmistermustard wrote sums up several of the issues. No footage of any kind at all, Beatles or no Beatles, from Hamburg, not the 1962 colour film, way too much studio talk over still images, too many people without connection to the story telling their views -many of which were identical. No taped of filmed interview with Mal Evans were included, he was barely mentioned. Neil A, Brian E, Derek T, Tony B and several others were vital parts of the story that could have been featured a little but more.
The fan footage was not used to a great extent, as expected. The Anthology pre-production staff spent years buying every little bit of film of the Beatles, but obviously failed with the original untouched Shea Stadium footage. Ok, and now this production company did the same with fan films, advertising for it, getting it, and using very little of it. Such a shame. Quality may be poor, but the historic importance is not. that would have added to the story the bit “The Beatles as seen from the fans´ view”. The story just covers the bit that the fans could not hear them because of all the screaming. No mentions if they could see them, or how or what they could see.
I may have to see the film again though. Because of the live streaming from London, the sound was slightly behind throughout the interviews, the film and the Shea do. Those interviewers by the way, did not really do a good job, I think. Calling the group an “overnight success” and then cutting off Paul and Ringo when they try to tell him they were not caused the man next to me to shout aloud “Shut up!” to the man on stage who was so full of himself. He even took time -on the stage- to take selfies with himself and the two Beatles. Yoko seemed to be a bit off, not really saying much beyond “you know”. But, I think it was her who said “It´s all about the great music they made”. So true.

I watched it yesterday at home, on Hulu (twice!), and really enjoyed it. Yes, it was nothing we didn’t know, but what really got me was the restored quality of the 1963 shows. Made it seem as if those concerts happened recently, instead of 53 years ago.
My only regret, though, is that I wish I could have seen it in the theater to see the Shea footage.

So I guess there’s footage shown in theaters that isn’t shown on Hulu? Because Hulu is all I’ve got. It was a crazy day yesterday (and Friday) so tonight I intend to settle in and watch. It’s a shame I don’t get to see it on theater screens; the theaters showing it here in Boca are too far out there and I’ve nobody to really go with. I know I could go alone, and I don’t mind it, but I’m not moved to drive nearly a half hour out of my way when I can just watch at home on the large living room TV with surround sound.

Nothing can beat my annoyance at the audience in the cinema.
Who the f**k claps a film and when people appear on screen?
If you want to have a chat piss off out of the cinema?
And put your phones away. If you can’t manage to go 2 hours without using a phone go and get therapy!
OMG this. THIS is the reason I go to so few movies any more. It’s damned expensive for one thing, and everything you said above is why I’m happy to just settle in with Hulu and watch it tonight in the comforts of home.
