The rooftop concert has become so iconic it can be hard to evaluate it but while previous to this I felt it a fun burst of one final show from the guys, I now see it more as an exhausted, smallest option available to get that ‘payoff’ Paul and MLH were after. It’s disappointing it kept the band at a remove from the audience, but that may have been the point. Clearly Paul thought that maybe he could leverage the good will from this compromise to another effort. Maybe if the band had just not focused on getting one good cut out of playing the songs multiple times, thrown in some non-Beatles classics they all knew well, it may have slightly, possibly led the other to see potential to doing a more ambitious concert locally.
Even if crowd couldn’t see them, most bands were not playing on rooftops during that time period. That’s what makes it iconic.

I do think they missed a trick there by not doing the show on Primrose Hill, would have been perfect to me, on top of the hill where that small concreted area is with one of the best views of London in the background, and often rather busy for a park so a good audience too…would have been super duper.

I think they shoulda done it in Libya. “Two thousand torch-bearing Arabs!”
GEORGE: In fact, The Detroit Sound. JOHN: In fact, yes. GEORGE: In fact, yeah. Tamla-Motown artists are our favorites. The Miracles. JOHN: We like Marvin Gaye. GEORGE: The Impressions PAUL & GEORGE: Mary Wells. GEORGE: The Exciters. RINGO: Chuck Jackson. JOHN: To name but eighty.

I’ve just started watching the Rooftop concert and I think it’s one of the coolest things I’ve ever f*****g seen. The nervousness for them of doing it, the nervousness of everyone else involved in not knowing if they would do it, and then they appear, tune up and start playing to the streets below who’ve got no idea it’s happening. That is f*****g amazing.
I’ve heard this on bootlegs but to watch it…
This is everything to me who’s been a Beatles fan for over thirty years. Way above and beyond the Anthology series.

I find it strange why it was decided to have so little focus on the last day, aside from wanting the Rooftop to be the focus. I do hope they feature more of it in the expanded release as it’s such a shame to see so little after such depth on many other dates.
It’s easily the best film I’ve ever watched. I love how Debbie and Jimmy kept the police away for so long by being politely completely unhelpful. Eventually they get on the roof, Mal turns George and John’s amps off and George is disgusted so turns it back on. All five were loving it. Maybe if Ringo hadn’t had to go and film, but that gave them the focus to do the rooftop in the first place.
I’m sad it’s finished but there is so much more to come.

I really like the split screen format for the rooftop gig with reactions and interviews with the public which was a great touch but at the same time it’s a major shame that you can’t also see the gig in its entirety without the interruptions.
Something else surprised me was how the film ran credits over the performances of Let it Be and The Long And Winding Road as if they weren’t that important and just an afterthought which surely must have pissed Paul off. Let’s hope these issues get sorted via Blu-ray extras.
I listened to Peter Jackson on the Things We Said Today podcast and he mentioned that Disney weren’t interested in Blu-ray extras as there’s little demand (try not to laugh… we’re talking about the Beatles here) but am I right in thinking the situation may have changed?

He might have talked about the extras on the D+ Streaming service. Some movies and showes have Bonus stuff which come with the BD. I think its not watched that much on D+

It all goes to prove what Ringo said; when they got all the bullshit out the window and just played, the magic was still there, especially if they were excited by the material. And they clearly are loving playing live again with the crowd down below. The sight as all of them slowly realise the police are on the roof and want it stopped is brilliant, the thrill they get is really something. Yet they keep going.
I’ve seen and read reports for years that George was mostly silent and stour aside for a few backing vocals but he really gets into it. I think it helped George loosen up not having a mad braying audience right in his face as there was no return to getting lynched, it must have been hard for him the thought of returning to the Beatlemania days which he really came to loathe by August 1966.
Finally, for now (as I could post for days), is the comments on the street from the crowd below. The woman who wasn’t happy she’d been woken up from her sleep (it was lunchtime!!). All the middle class businessmen who didn’t like the noise as it disturbed their busy working day. Those who couldn’t see the point of playing on the roof since they couldn’t be seen (they’ve got the money to play in front of the fans according to one woman). The guy at the end who was livid a cameraman was on his roof filming (Debbie denying all knowledge again; she deserves an award for being the best most politest nicest but unhelpfulist receptionist in the world). The fans and people who simply enjoyed the music and a free lunchtime concert out of nowhere by the greatest band of all time (all the people slowly gathering as the music travelled and word got out). Imagine that being done in a time of social media and 24-hour news. Nowadays it’s not a big thing as so many bands have done secret unannounced gigs and everyone knows before it starts but back then it was very rare.
As you can probably tell, I think the whole damn thing was incredible. I really hope we get an expanded Rooftop section where we can chose all the different camera angles, vox pops etc to watch in full screen instead of at the same time. It’s certainly possible.

MLH says Let It Be WILL in fact be re-released and they’ve already done work on it. He also says he’s a bigger fan of The Stones…shocking! WHY AM I NOT SURPRISED?!

We know they are working on it as Apple themselves have said it’s being remastered. To be a slight pessimist for a minute, we were here before ‘LIBN’ came out with Michael and Apple saying it was coming yet it never did.
To counter that tho, having got ‘GB’, it’s almost impossible for Apple to come out and say they don’t want the original film out, it would be incredibly short-sighted and stupid.

I mean, they should release it yes, but I also don’t see LIB being considered as anything but a hackjob edit of this now that we have it. There is, to me, nothing of value LIB has over GB unless you want the music videos – which the GB DVD will likely have -or you want to see slightly longer footage of some scenes, which the GB DVD will also likely have. Even if, say, you wanted to see the original cut of rooftop concert, It doesn’t leave much in the original’s favor. I think if anything LIB should be released only to show how poorly cut it is by compHarrison.

I was listening to this on the way to work this morning. It’s what some things The Beatles themselves learned from the doc. Paul learned that George and John we’re going to release solo work, but continue on with The Beatles. It one of those thoughts of what could have been. For me on the one hand yes it would have been cool it they did, but on the other hand they left a perfect legacy and I wouldn’t want that tarnished.

As far as Let It Be being released I would get it and probably watch it a few times because up until Get Back I have never watched Let It Be other than YouTube and tv footage. I avoided it. That and I didn’t want some bootleg or foreign copy with shitty quality. Otherwise, I’ll probably have a copy just to say I have it. I will probably reference Get Back for my knowledge now.

‘LIB ’ definitely has a place in Beatles history that needs to be kept alive. There are different scenes, angles and performances for one but it does tell a story, even if that story is not all that accurate and badly edited.
I agree it’s going to be a poor companion piece in comparison to ‘GB’.
