There has been hints in recent months that a new Let It Be is in the pipeline. Talk of a re-edited version etc.
It has been officially confirmed in the last hour, on the 50th anniversary of the rooftop concert, that Sir Peter Jackson (director of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, the Hobbit trilogy, etc.) is revisiting the footage for a new film.
Peter Jackson has said:
The 55 hours of never-before-seen footage and 140 hours of audio made available to us ensure this movie will be the ultimate ‘fly on the wall’ experience that Beatles fans have long dreamt about. It’s like a time machine transports us back to 1969, and we get to sit in the studio watching these four friends make great music together.
He added:
I was relieved to discover the reality is very different to the myth. After reviewing all the footage and audio that Michael Lindsay-Hogg shot 18 months before they broke up, it’s simply an amazing historical treasure trove. Sure, there’s moments of drama, but none of the discord this project has long been associated with. Watching John, Paul, George and Ringo work together, creating now-classic songs from scratch, is not only fascinating. it’s funny, uplifting and surprisingly intimate. … I’m thrilled and honoured to have been entrusted with this remarkable footage. Making the movie will be a sheer joy.

They buried this line right at the very end of the press release. I have no idea why they didn’t make a bigger deal of it:
Following the release of this new film, a restored version of the original Let It Be movie directed by Michael Lindsay-Hogg will also be made available

Peter Jackson’s not known for brevity, right? Perhaps he’ll put out the full 50+ hours as a director’s cut

There would be no reason to, @Bongo.
The Ron Howard picture was about The Beatles public performances, while this is them – apart from the Rooftop – in the studio.

Well, The Beatles were once mooted to make a Lord of the Rings film, @AppleScruffJunior. I think Ringo was going to be Bilbo/Frodo…

Intriguing news! I’d be more excited if I connected with Jackson as an artist in any way, but if he’s got access to all the footage and knows his film-restoration technology (and is a Fabs fan), there’s no reason he can’t assemble something special. (Well, no reason aside from Paul/Ringo/Yoko/Olivia adding their ideas and objections, I mean.)

I can’t wait! The rooftop concert in full remastered definition would look incredible.
I've been up on the mountain, and I've seen his wondrous grace,
I've sat there on the barstool and I've looked him in the face.
He seemed a little haggard, but it did not slow him down,
he was humming to the neon of the universal sound.

I imagine it’ll get a cinema release if Jackson is doing it. If it doesn’t play in Galway, I’ll cry.

Well, he’s certainly got all the footage and audio from what he’s said, and he definitely knows his film-restoration technology – his last film, the stunning World War I archive project, They Shall Not Grow Old, is up for an Oscar this year…
I don’t think it matters if he’s Beatles fan myself (though I believe he is), just that he treats the source material with respect. I’m sure he wasn’t a fan of World War I but produced a remarkable statement when given access to the (UK) Imperial War Museum archive footage.
The other thing this virtually confirms is that there will a Deluxe Edition of the Let It Be album.
So, hopefully, that means there’s a Deluxe Abbey Road this year.

They Shall Not Grow Old is an incredible piece of work. I think this project is in very good hands. His experience with scenes of close quarter combat could come in handy here.

It’s great exciting news that Apple are finally a) revisiting the sessions from January 1969 and issuing new, unreleased and unseen material and b) reissuing the ‘Let It Be ’ movie. However, my fear is that there is going to be a readjusting of how the time was. All four Beatles are on record stating very explicitly the times were s**t for all of them. Now that’s not completely true, there are a lot of fun moments, even in the released movie but I fear Apple will turn this into a BFF film with only the happy fun times and not George walking out, John wanting to ditch the three and be with Yoko whilst out of his head on drugs, Ringo bored senseless and Paul driving them mad. It wasn’t all the time but it did happen yet it doesn’t fit Apple’s brand image and ultimately Apple will have approval for what is included.
Certainly on the music and promotional side of the 50th Anniversary ‘White Album ’ box the brand image was harmony, great friends and happiness with any tales of discord underplayed, labelled a myth or not mentioned at all.
So reading
“I was relieved to discover the reality is very different to the myth,” continues Jackson, “After reviewing all the footage and audio that Michael Lindsay-Hogg shot 18 months before they broke up, it’s simply an amazing historical treasure-trove. Sure, there’s moments of drama – but none of the discord this project has long been associated with. Watching John, Paul, George, and Ringo work together, creating now-classic songs from scratch, is not only fascinating – it’s funny, uplifting and surprisingly intimate”.
does concern me. Let the audience see what actually happened not what suits Yoko, Paul, Olivia and Ringo.
And if if there is any sense both the original film and the new one should be screened as a double showing in the cinema for the audiences to compare. 90 minutes for the original followed by an interval and then back in to see the new fresh edit.

Myself, @meanmistermustard, I think Jackson is a big enough director, and is aware enough of the tensions that surround it, to have only agreed to do it with ground rules about how much interference he’ll allow. I think he’s unlikely to have agreed if he thinks the end result will be a hugely compromised version of how he sees it that damages his reputation.

I was really excited to hear about this. I think Peter Jackson will do a good enough job with all of that footage and of course some more music for us to listen to as well.

I just thought it was too big a story for the Beatles News thread, @Elementary Penguin, so just plunged right in and gave it it’s own thread as I suspected it might get some reaction.
While I was creating this thread, @Joe was writing an article for the main site, so we both caught it (from different sources) at around the same time.
