Well its nice to know im an inspiration.
I was having a go at the commercial disco that is forever churned out by god-awful cheese-bucket-fest radio stations normally at the weekend.
Every time I see a 70’s music compilation I cringe and you wont ever catch me listening to 70’s night on the radio even tho there were some really strong artists out there (Elton, Queen, Rod Stewart, Solo Beatles). I truly hate the Glam, Punk and Disco genres because of the same s**t the radio stations shove on over and over. Having said that the most boring record ive ever heard is Barry White’s Just The Way You Are, nothing happens until an incredibly dreary sax(?) solo comes on before returning to Barry now sounding like he’s managed to bore himself out of his brains, pus the song never bloody ends. Never in my life have I needed a Beatles fix more.
And I know there are 1000’s of exceptions to what ive said and its a completely general overview that can be pulled apart in seconds. The radio killed it for me.

Oh, Paul. He has two stikes now. This, and Give My Regards To Broad Street . Must have skimed over George, but he was in the Rutles so he gets a pass. The Rutles’ “Al You Need is Cash” is truly excellent!
That it truly is! But maybe George gets a demerit for “Shanghai Surprise”, if it’s as bad as its reputation.
No explanation needed, MrM, but yours is perfectly understandable nonetheless! (And I never cared for Barry White either.)
GEORGE: In fact, The Detroit Sound. JOHN: In fact, yes. GEORGE: In fact, yeah. Tamla-Motown artists are our favorites. The Miracles. JOHN: We like Marvin Gaye. GEORGE: The Impressions PAUL & GEORGE: Mary Wells. GEORGE: The Exciters. RINGO: Chuck Jackson. JOHN: To name but eighty.

Would Shanghai Surprise be a film where nobody involved in its existence wants to see it released, ive only ever heard how awful a movie it is and how much a pain Madonna and Sean Penn were? I love how they had to call on George to appease the hatred from the media towards the leading cast with a press conference. The music is good tho, Shanghai Surprise I enjoy a lot as well as The Hottest Gong in Town and Breath Away From Heaven and Someplace Else which ended up on Cloud Nine both came from the film.

No idea how bad the film truly is or if it’s available on video anywhere, but I’ve found a complete recap at one of those bad-movie sites for the curious:

And hey look: the recapper is Dr. Winston O’Boogie! (One of the bigwigs at that site.)

Thanks for posting that link von. Was enjoying the read until I got 3 paragraphs into the film description which bored me and I realised there was another 9 pages (not the article was boring it was the film that sounded incredibly dull). Life is too short – where is that paint drying?

Yeah, I only ended up reading half of it myself – not one of the better recaps I’d read at that same site.

Can’t think of anywhere else to put this – Meet the Beatles has an entry on “Sgt. Pepper ‘s Lonely Hearts Club Band on the Road,” which played for six weeks on Broadway.
Hard to believe John and Paul sanctioned this (according to the blog, George and Ringo did not).
Dig those gold spandex shorts.

It’s been ages since I’ve seen this movie. I do remember it being very cheesy. I might have to get this off Netflix again and give it another watch to refresh my memory.

Because I love the BeeGees, Peter Frampton, Earth, Wind, and Fire, Alice Cooper, and Aerosmith.
Some of the covers is good too.

Watching it now (first time in like 35 years)…still terrible/embarrassing, but it has its moments
– Bee Gees’ harmony singing is OK on the title cut, and I like the way they chirp out “Good MORning! Good MORning! Good MORning-uh!”, for some reason
– Possibly the first film ever with a sequence set in a record pressing plant where its own soundtrack album is being pressed and shipped
– Soundtrack version of “She’s So Heavy” has a new unrelated middle section with some pretty hot jazz-fusion guitar soloing from (I believe) either Larry Carlton or Jeff Beck.
– “Mean Mr. Mustard” likewise has many hot synth-guitar licks, plus a weird, entirely vocodered vocal.
I’m appreciative that such virtuoso musical additions are completely UN-Beatle-like, perversely enjoyable if you forget the originals.
– “Oh! Darling ” sequence is actually good for a coupla laffs, as Robin Gibb’s backing musicians abandon him one by one while he keeps singing, until he’s all alone. Then he finally just walks off himself, with a final half-verse of song ultimately left unsung! (OK, maybe it’s not that funny…)
– “Maxwell’s Silver Hammer ” sequence with a mad Steve Martin is likewise reasonably amusing. Nicely done production number too, the only one that really stands out.
– Sandy Farina has kind of a 70s folk-pop-country nicevoice, and her performances of “Here Comes The Sun ” and “Strawberry Fields Forever ” make me wonder what @meanmistermustard woulda thought of this soundtrack if the producers had gone for Emmylou Harris instead.
– EW&F and Aerosmith…thank you, Epic/Columbia Records!
– I think that’s all the good stuff, but I did have a mild personal appreciation for all the disco-era synthesizer sounds, particularly on the “Abbey Road ” tracks
Paul: Yeah well… first of all, we’re bringing out a ‘Stamp Out Detroit’ campaign.
