Sam Mendes / Neal Street Productions To Make Landmark Beatles Biopic Project For Sony Pictures Entertainment
Four feature films, one from each band member’s perspective, will have global theatrical release in 2027
Culver City, CA (February 20th, 2024) — Today, Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE), Sam Mendes, and Neal Street Productions announced a groundbreaking creative endeavor to tell the story of The Beatles with four distinct theatrical feature films. The project marks the first time Apple Corps Ltd. and The Beatles – Paul McCartney , Ringo Starr , and the families of John Lennon and George Harrison – have granted full life story and music rights for a scripted film.As conceived by Mendes, who will direct, the four theatrical feature films – one from each band member’s point-of-view – will intersect to tell the astonishing story of the greatest band in history.SPE will finance and distribute worldwide with full theatrical windows in 2027. The dating cadence of the films, the details of which will be shared closer to release, will be innovative and groundbreaking.Mendes will direct all four films and produce alongside his Neal Street Productions partner Pippa Harris and Neal Street’s Julie Pastor. Jeff Jones will executive produce for Apple Corps Ltd.“I’m honoured to be telling the story of the greatest rock band of all time, and excited to challenge the notion of what constitutes a trip to the movies,” said Sam Mendes.“We intend this to be a uniquely thrilling, and epic cinematic experience: four films, told from four different perspectives which tell a single story about the most celebrated band of all time,” said Pippa Harris. “To have The Beatles’ and Apple Corps’ blessing to do this is an immense privilege. From our first meeting with Tom Rothman and Elizabeth Gabler, it was clear that they shared both our passion and ambition for this project, and we can’t think of a more perfect home than Sony Pictures.”“Apple Corps is delighted to collaborate with Sam, Pippa and Julie to explore each Beatle’s unique story and to bring them together in a suitably captivating and innovative way,” said Apple Corps Ltd. CEO Jeff Jones. “Sony Pictures’ enthusiastic support, championing the project’s scope and creative vision from the start, has been invaluable for all of us.”“I know I speak for our CEO Tony Vinciquerra, who was instrumental in making this happen, and every Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group colleague around the world when I say: ‘yeah, yeah, yeah!’” said Tom Rothman, Chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures’ Motion Picture Group. “Theatrical movie events today must be culturally seismic. Sam’s daring, large-scale idea is that and then some. Pairing his premiere filmmaking team, with the music and the stories of four young men who changed the world, will rock audiences all over the globe. We are deeply grateful to all parties and look forward ourselves to breaking some rules with Sam’s uniquely artistic vision.”

Four Beatles movie biopics announced in unprecedented granting of life and music rights (msn.com)
For the first time ever, Apple Corps Ltd and The Beatles have granted full life story and music rights for scripted movies about the Fab Four, the most successful musicians in history.
James Bond director Sir Sam Mendes will helm four separate biopics of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr, one from each of the Fab Four’s perspectives, for cinematic release in 2027.

I’m a huge Elton John fan but wasn’t excited for the biopic, maybe I’m still bitter about the exclusion of Bitter Fingers in the movie but also I generally don’t enjoy music biopic. I liked Love and Mercy but mainly because of how the depicted the studio sessions, matching the scenes to the audio of real studio sessions. Plus Paul Dano and Paul Giamatti were really great. We’ll have to see what actors get brought aboard (hopefully they don’t use deep fake AIs) but in general this type of thing isn’t my cup of tea.
"The pump don't work cause the vandals took the handles!"
-Bob Dylan, Subterranean Homesick Blues
"We could ride and surf together while our love would grow"
-Brian Wilson, Surfer Girl
I think this is brilliant news. It’s got the blessing of Paul and Ringo and the Lennon and Harrison estates, so it’ll include their original music (it would make sense for Giles Martin to come on board too, so we might get surround sound audio). Mendes is an innovative director and someone who could really do something interesting with the project. I doubt they’ll be straight biopics and I’m cautiously optimistic.

It’s intriguing but this is Apple, they are experts in promising the greatest show never previously known to man only to end up bringing out three guys, a wooden plank and a duck.
Their innovative release schedule could turn out to be buy a tea towel and you unlock part three on some new streaming channel that you watch wearing an immersive headset costing $300. And before someone highlights the cinema line, ‘Get Back ‘ was initially a cinema release before Disney got involved (The reissued ‘Let It Be ‘ being released as soon as Paul finishes his Archive Collection series).
I got excited by the Live project which eventually turned out and in to the ‘Eight Days A Week ‘ mess so I’ll wait until more details are released in time.

Casting is going to be vital. Audience reception to the first will be too, if they really are committed to releasing three others. And even if the audience responds positively, will they come back time after time to see variations on the same story? I’m cautiously excited about this. But I have questions about it all too.

I hope the duck is cast as Ringo.

I think that’s more a joke that’s being reported tongue-in-cheek to write a story which gets clicks. I’ve read comments such as covering George’s fun times with Maureen, no one expects it to actually be included.

Brian deserves his own movie as well but that won’t happen anyway…It will be interesting to see how his role is treated in the four versions
Are they not doing the “Midas Man” movie about Brian Epstein?
I really cant wait for the 4 Biopics. I have the idea that they will do it a little like with Love and Mercy, picking a specific moment of the Beatles for each of them and telling the story of the band from the late 50s to 1970. My idea would be:
John: Quarrymen to early Beatles
George: Beatlemania
Paul: Sgt. Pepper to White Album
Ringo: Get Back and Abbey Road
As a film fan I really love the concept they approach with those films. The hype for those films will be massive. Plus it will create new Beatles fans for sure which will lead to a new demand of Beatles releases which we will benefit from. All in all a great project. I do hope for some great home media releases of the movies too!

All four movies are coming out in the same year. Maybe a spacing of a couple of months in between?

I’d be happy if they skipped the 50’s and started with Ringo joining. I like the idea put forward elsewhere where its Ringo joining thru to mid ’64 or so then George’s view of the end of the touring years due to how much he came to wanting out. We then get Paul taking the band thru ‘Pepper’ and then John as he breaks away from the band. However, it may also be worth seeing just how much hell Paul went thru having to sue his mates to save them from Klein. It still amazes me how Paul did that and how he was proven right. Should get a lot more praise and respect for having done that.
Do we really need to spend an hour or so watching John and Paul meet and all of the Pete stuff? Most books bore by telling the same story time frame as all the others with little new.

Love your ideas too! The journey from Ringos POV joining over George experiencing Beatlemania and Tour ending, Paul becoming the “boss” and guiding them with Pepper, MMT, Get Back and John ending the Band and all the Klein Dispute would be epic.

I think, for me, this whole project rests on the casting of John. His image has been so bastardised, we’ve seen so many exaggerated comedy impressions. It’ll be so tough for the actor to convey John’s unique qualities without it looking like a parody. I don’t know anything about Harris Dickinson, but if true he has a huge task ahead.

Agreed. A reason why I prefer the real footage rather than recreations like this will be.

For me all four are ingrained in my brain, it will therefore be very difficult to adjust to someone playing any of the four. It’s the same with a Beatles tribute band and those I therefore do not watch.
I also sat thru some of the ‘Lennon Naked’ documentary which scared me for life and has put me off Beatles dramatisations. I like Christopher Eccleston but everything about that film was awful or worse. I get why this is happening (the success and impact of ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, ‘Rocket Man’ etc) but I also haven’t watched those as no matter how good Rami Malek is he will never be Freddie Mercury, it’s just something I find very difficult to get past (and I’m not bothered about watching an Elton John film).
It also concerns me if we get creative license to make the story more interesting, better flow or just thru lack of attention to detail.
Beatles fans are notoriously difficult to please and very quick to condemn.
