BBC Radio 2 to Feature Cultural Icons this AutumnThe Beatley part of the article.
A programme that explores a truly poignant time in history with another great icon this autumn is John Lennon ’s Last Day (Thursday 8 October, 10-11pm), performed by Ian Hart…
I only remembered this today, obviously too late. Was it any good?
It’s available to listen to here. I’m going whacking on the headphones and listening to it now because I’ve procrastinated and not done out notes for some people and I need to get them started tonight and the radio is fun to listen to.
Just finished it and I’m all teary-eyed. I thought it was done really well Ian Hart speaks of John as in the 3rd person so he says “John Lennon got up at….Then John Lennon …” it sounds jarring but it completely fits the piece. The tears began to fall at the end when Hart was talking about if John hadn’t gone back to say goodnight to Sean would he be alive today and then they played little Sean singing With A Little Help From My Friends , and you’re just forced to think about what a merciless b*****d Chapman was, gunning down a man who was going in to see his five year old son.
All-in-all it was a good show, I enjoyed the end-bit (I’m paraphrasing):
“Enough about Chapman, he didn’t really kill John Lennon that day. John’s music and The Beatles’ will be played for generations and generations to come, long after we’re all gone”
Truer words were never spoken.

Also just finished listening, @AppleScruffJunior (and recording it).
Agree that it was very well done. Good idea to have Hart as the narrator. It was interesting how personal he sounded whenever he had to mention that man, his contempt was dripping bile every time the script demanded a mention of him.
I was rather teary-eyed by the end.

Thanks for the link, ASJr. For those who would like to hear it, the player notes that you only have 24 days in which to do so. I imagine it will be taken down thereafter.
Thanks to both you and Ron for the reviews. I will be sure to listen to it this weekend…tissues at the ready.

For anyone in the UK the BBC radio app has a handful of Beatles related programs to download. The search engine doesn’t bring them all up and some expire over the next few days but there are documentaries on the rooftop concert, John’s “Bigger than Jesus” controversy, the 40th anniversary of the White Album and John’s New York years (all of which can be found in the first few days of Radio 6’s October schedule). Also available is a debate just after John’s murder in 1980 to amend the gun control laws in America.

That’s where they had to cut Free As A Bird and Real Love for not being canon.

Even if they were canon they wouldn’t have made the cut, as neither reached Number One in the UK or the US. They’ve just fecked up the timing, running on a weekday night, it will be broadcast between 8-10pm.

It takes them 60 minutes to do that!!!There was lots of pointless discussion.
Can’t wait to see. Here’s hoping for lots of pithy comments and forever going in circles around the same damn points.
Fingers crossed we get an extended cut where they discuss the ‘A Day In The Life ‘ ahh’s.

The various ITV channels are running promos for ‘The Nations Favourite Beatles Number One’ (i thought it was called ‘The Nations Favourite Beatles Song’ but number one covers it as they are promoting ‘1’).
In case folk forgot (i did until I saw the promo – i’m watching the snooker) it’s on tomorrow (Wednesday 11th November) at 8pm for those in the UK or who can someone access that channel thru other means.
Also a reminder that episodes one and two of ‘The Beatles at the BBC with Bill Kenwright’ are now available to download on the BBC Radio app (country restrictions apply.

Good news young forumpudlians, RTÉ1 (an Irish channel) is going showing a new Beatles documentary:
Fab! The Night the Beatles Came To Dublin (27 December at 8pm) The Beatles came to Dublin for 2 concerts on Nov 7th 1963 and the teenagers of the country went crazy. Using extensive archive and news reports of that time, these diehard fans share their stories from that glorious moment of madness in this heart warming documentary.
I’ll make sure to post a link to it so ye can all watch it if ye want. It should be good 🙂
