For anyone who has access to it a channel on Sky Digital called ‘Showcase’ (Sky channel #192) are broadcasting two programmes called ‘The Beatles: Red Album ‘ and ‘The Beatles: Blue Album ‘ which feature critics reviewing the albums. I taped the ‘Blue Album ‘ episode on the off-chance and it turned out to have actual Beatles songs and clips from a number of the ’67 -> ’70 promo’s as well as from ‘Magical Mystery Tour ‘, ‘Yellow Submarine ‘ and ‘Let It Be ‘. Nothing revelatory but good fun to watch (always enjoyable to hear folk disparage the lyrics of ‘I Am The Walrus ‘ on the basis that they are nonsense) despite some ridiculous errors – for example one of the critics saying it took 3 years to mix the tracks for ‘Let It Be ‘.
The ‘Red Album ‘ episode is on this Thursday (1st January 2015) at 12pm and no doubt both will be repeated endlessly for a while if you keep an eye out.
The same channel has documentaries and reviews of a good number of other artists.

I saw a really crap documentary on one of them free-to-air channels called The Beatles: Love Me Do . It was like the poor man’s anthology, so boring, about 2 hours long. Victor Spinetti was the saving grace as he did some good interviews for it (his favourite album is Sgt. Pepper ‘s). Also featured interviews with some Hamburg people, Allan Williams and Dick Lester.
So….if you see it don’t watch it…

I taped that and watched two minutes before deleting it from my Sky recordings; looked abysmal and had a real cheap crappy feel to it. Occasionally i search the sky guide for ‘Beatles’ to see if anything is coming up.
Allen Williams has done interviews for most Beatles documentaries yet hasn’t said anything new since 1974.

For those who don’t own a house copy, AHDN (2000 dolby remaster) is airing on TCM (Turner Classic Movies) at 21:45 December 31st, NYC time (think it’s GMT-5). If you’re not familiar with the station, it airs movies unedited, uncut, and not smashed to fit on an old tv screen. And – no commercial interruptions! Most people in the states get it with “extended basic cable”. I’m pretty sure it travels to another country or two.
In fact, I’ve got my dvr set to tape the whole night – look at the lineup:
8:00 Elvis on Tour (1972)
9:45 A Hard Day’s Night (1964)
11:30 Gimme Shelter (1970)
1:15 (am 1/1/15, nyc time) Tommy (1975)
3:15am Jimi Hendrix (1973)
EDIT: heh, just noticed that the date/time of Tommy is 1:15 1/1/15. Or omitting the day, 1:15 1/15. Can ya hear me?

BBC4 is showing a series called Sound of Song, in which musician Neil Brand explores song by looking at recording techniques. Tomorrow night’s episode (23 January, 9pm & 1am) includes him
…analysing features such as Elvis Presley’s slapback echo effect in Memphis, and the Beatles’ tape loops at Abbey Road .
At 11pm & 3am there’s another repeat of The Beatles’ Please Please Me – Remaking a Classic.

I’ve had this show on my dvr for a month and am kind of afraid to watch it. It’s an episode of “Crimes of the Century” and you can guess which crime this one’s about. I’m afraid it will be too trigger. Has anyone seen it? I’m sure it’s not a real pleasant watch but it might contain some historically important information.

Tcm (Turner classic movies, should be on any broadcast system in the states at least) is showing AHDN at 3:30 am NYC time tonight (Friday morning). it’s the restored version (i’m watching the one i taped on new years eve).
Little glitch I noticed – near the beginning when they are in the cage (about 17 minutes in) singing I should have known better, George plays the lead on a 12 string, but later in the song he is holding a 6.
