….Why?WHY is it so hard to make The Beatles LOOK and SOUND like The Beatles?!
Hard to make a film about The Beatles without The Beatles, I guess
But it’s not like there haven’t been better immitators! Even Markk McGaan was a great John look-alike in “John And Yoko: A Love Story”

The worst bit is that the guy playing John Lennon is way too short, about 5’8″ compared to Lennon’s 5’11”. Otherwise everything else (period instruments, studio detail) at least in the short studio 2 clip is the most accurate i’ve seen in any Beatles biopic. I think that’s the best ‘George Martin’ i’ve seen so far.

You mean Paul McGann? Yeah, he was fantastic in that. A bonus is you also get Peter Capaldi playing George Harrison .

No no, Paul was his brother. This was Mark. (Dunno WHY i said Robert! Oops!) 🙂
(And yes, I love Paul too. His Doctor is my favorite.)
Wish they gave Capaldi another season!
ANYHOO! Time to watch the movie. Anyone seen it yet?

Midas Man is live on Disney now.
First thoughts, (almost all superficial cos I’m tired).
John was too short.
There weren’t enough matadors.
George should have been an extra in ‘The Walking Dead’.
Pete was too old.
The film felt disjointed.
Best review I’ve got to offer right now. Like I said. I’m tired.

The Pete actor was too old, but he’d clearly been watching old interviews with him so he had his tics and mannerisms down pat. Same with the guy playing Paul.

I’ve just seen the movie. Its not released in germany yet but I found a way to watch it. If anybody needs help, just write me PM
I liked the movie. Its not perfect because its rather jumpy with the timeline and as usual for a biopic way to short to properly handle all the phases of his life and all the things that occured in a meaninful way.
The bread and butter of the movie is Brians personal struggle with his life as well as his relationship with the Beatles. Those are the topic that drive the movie. We experience several of the “main” events of their relationship: their first meeting, which happens right at the beginning, the Decca audition, their first number one hits in the UK and the USA. One major scene is a press conference after Johns “bigger then jesus” remarks. They displayed the first and last big tours in the USA quite cleverly by letting Brian tell the story by breaking the fourth wall and showing walking in front of an ever changing wall of clips and pictures. You’ll notice the difference in is mood and mental state from 1964 to 1966 at those two scenes.
What they did good was shown how much the boys meant to Brian and how he stood up and fought for them. Also his struggles with his sexuality and drug abuse combined with his duties to his family and buisiness are shown in a good and clear way.
The acting is great. Brians actor for me has done a great job. The Beatles were shown in their usual mannerisms which I found ok but I really hope they get more deep into them with the Sam Mendes pics. Lennon was witty, Ringo was the wholesome one, George the dry one and Paul the cute one. They were the usual stereotypical Beatle characters with only one or two scenes were they could break out of it. For a movie centered around Brian its ok but that wont do for the 4 Mendes films. And what does not do, not in this picture and not the coming up ones: the god awful wigs. Ringo and George looked ridiciulus with those!
Music wise you get a original score as well as some Beatles performances sung by the actors. The songs are all songs the Beatles covered and they had not get the rights for. So no Lennen/McCartney compositions are heard only mentioned.
One of the best scenes is the scene with the boys, Brian and George Martin. We get a good performance and then a well acted scene of the 6 main contributors of Beatles Magic. I loved that one the most.
The closing scene is very nice too and bittersweet in many way. The last picture of Brian is soooo sad because…he wasnt there when the real thing happened and the reimagination of the picture is very beautiful.
I’d give it out of 5. Hope It gets a nice Bluray releaese for the collection. Its worth a watch and its one of the better and more expensive Beatles Biopics. I liked it.
Now…lets go with the Sam Mendes Quadrology!

I’m super excited about this movie! I’ve seen many previews, and recently read ‘Cellar Full of Noise’. However, it is not released in the US at this point and cannot find a release date anywhere, so I will have to find an “alternative” way of watching it.

Well, I have seen it now. I’m glad I watched it, but my overwhelming feeling about was that it is just “OK”. It scratches the surface of a lot of things, but doesn’t really dig in to Mr. Epstein as I would have liked. Still waiting on a definitive Brian Epstein biopic.
It was fairly entertaining. The performances were pretty good – some were excellent. I thought Emily Watson was great as Queenie. I would have liked to see more George Martin. Following Brian into the Cavern the first time to see The Beatles perform was cool. The lack of Lennon/McCartney/Harrison songs was noticeable. After John’s “rattle your jewelry” comment at the Royal Command Performance, they played “Money”, which was weird. Also the actor playing John is almost distractingly short. The fourth-wall breaking narration from Brian comes off as kind of random and awkward.
There are some Brian related event that you are kind of expecting to see. Some satisfyingly show up, like a great scene with Alan Williams telling Brian he “wouldn’t touch The Beatles with a 10 ft. bargepole”. Others are kind of glossed over – like the scene in NEMS where Brian finds out someone wanted the My Bonnie disk. It doesn’t show Raymond Jones asking for it, just Alistair Taylor telling Brian about it. There’s an early scene where it highlights that Brian enjoys taking trips to Spain, but completely omits Brian and John’s vacation together. There are other examples, but I won’t drag on.
Basically, for me it was a lot of potatoes, but not much meat, even though the potatoes were pretty good. 6/10.
(Hopefully this isn’t considered spoilers – I think most know the story. If so, I will edit. )
