I couldn’t find a thread on this so I decided I’d start it.
Mersey Boys is a film and Broadway play and it is currently being filmed in New York.
The plot: Al Moran, an Irish-American art professor, arrives to teach at the Liverpool Art College, circa 1960. He immediately clashes with a rebellious young Scouser by the name of John Lennon . The two soon become fast friends and are together when the Beatles are founded. Professor Moran follows the career of his four new mates from their coffee shop debut to their ultimate success as the world’s greatest rock n roll band. The hapless scholar also pursues the elusive Ginny Browne, a beautiful and independent woman.
You can buy the script on amazon* and there is the characters descriptions included in the preview:
Sounds like your stereotypical Beatles biopic:
John: Born rebel and troublemaker, awfully rude
Paul: Good-looking, likes nice clothes and girls, respectful and rude (Oh Paul you devil)
George: Naïve, confident, seen as Paul’s equal (?), loyal
Ringo: Respectful, easy going and short
Cynthia: Polite, formal, protective
Brian Epstein: Handsome, soft-spoken, well dressed
And on it goes…
From downtownmagazinenyc.com:
Mersey Boys stars Joanna Pickering as Ginny Brown, a student at Liverpool Art College who sparks a relationship (as well as a rivalry) between Professor Moran and student Lennon, and features Anna Shields as Lizzy Gibson, a Beatles groupie and Ginny’s rival for the Professor’s affections. Mike Strozier, who is also the director of the film, plays the Professor, while Jordan Brown plays John Lennon .
The other Beatles are played by Jeremiah Stanfield (Paul), Brady Cudmore (George) and Trevor Crane (Ringo).
According to Farrell, Pickering is the standout talent in the film. “Ginny Browne is the best character I have ever created in my long writing career [and] Joanna Pickering is the ideal person to bring [her] to life on the big screen.” Pickering and Shields will also be starring in the Broadway production.
The film is currently being shot and will premiere in April 2014 in New York City
So what do ye think about this lads? American actors playing the Beatles and the entire film being shot in NY. What will they do about Stu and Pete? They can’t just have Ringo going to Hamburg on the first trip with them! Well I’ll give it a look when it comes out anyways :/

I don’t care to be honest and the plot sounds terrible with the obligatory love interest.
Is this the one that one of the Gallacher brothers is involved in?
Why would you want to pay £10 for the script?
I think i’ve lost the will to live. Taken from the script that you can preview some of at amazon (link above) – “Paul McCartney – . . . He cheekily refers to Al as Uncle Albert (later a hit song).”
Interestingly in the list of Dramatis Personae there is no Pete Best or Stu Sutcliffe; you have Clancy Bartender, Waitress, Pigtails, Florrie Hagen, Gerry Marsden, Alan Williams, Mrs Lumpkins and a number of others but not their drummer of two years or bass player and dear friend who influenced them heavily.

Hello, lads & lassies, thank you for posting about Mersey Boys . Some filming was done with American actors and in New York City but it didn’t workout. The budget, accents, costumes and historical sites just weren’t there. The original film company couldn’t handle the logistics, and the production was halted in March of 2013. The screenplay was put up as a matter to protect the author’s copyright from the original publisher (who has since gone out of business). Yes, Stu is in the original novel, as well as in the screenplay, but due to budget restraints his part was axed in the New York filming. He’ll be safely back, and in Liverpool, if the film option is picked up. Ginny Browne, the female lead, is actually the pivotal character who hooks the professor up with John & the young Beatles. Mersey Boys is told many years after the facts and it is tongue-in-cheek. Is Al Moran just a senile old man full of blarney, or did this all gone down as recorded.?Read the book itself instead of judging a book from its cover. Nobody owns the Beatles any more; they’re a part of the ages. Relax and enjoy the ride backwards into golden age and a magical land….

Oh, by the way, mates, there’s no claims being made Mersey Boys is a documentary of facts.. It is an old man retelling a famous story; and it’s an American ear hearing the Scouse accent, not what the Scouse really sounds like. A novelist is writing fiction, not straight history.
Actually filming a fictional account about the Beatles in Liverpool is difficult here in 2014 because much of John, Paul, George, Ringo, Pete ands Stu’s old city has been ripped down. Some of the scenes in Mersey Boys takes place in the Lime Street Station which has been remodeled in recent years. Also, I’m sure you all know, many movies are now filmed in cities like Vancouver, Pittsburgh, Toronto, and Glasgow because of the costs. It’s not that difficult with today’s technology to crop-out, mat, edit or add anything you want in a movie.
However, your points are well-taken, and have been considered inside out. It’s to be hoped that if Mersey Boys is ever filmed that it be done so inside of Liverpool & Hamburg. Thanks for reading through my long e-mails. Take care!

Sorry to hear about the project falling through, if you were to axe a part in the film though surely you’d axe Ringo and not Stuart!

That could potentially lose your main audience there i.e. Beatle fans, we’re all sticklers for sticking-to-the-truth just look at the Nowhere Boy, Birth of The Beatles and Backbeat threads!

Good to hear

Why not have a Pete yet have a Gerry Marsden? And at the very least cut out corny cringing jokes like Uncle Albert .
Anyway, my opinion isn’t one you should be bothered with as i won’t be watching the film or reading the book.
Its really good for Scotland that more films are being filmed here; an increase in finance and tourism is never bad.
