Hi guys,

Basically, I’m writing a feature about the 50th anniversary of Magical Mystery Tour , some of which was filmed in West Malling, in Kent, where I go to University. Basically, I was wondering if anyone on here has a lot of information about the state of the band at the time, and, I suppose, their side of the story about the filming of the movie, or knows anyone who does? I know Mark Lewisohn is *the* guy when it comes to Beatles history, but can imagine it’s hard to get in contact with him.

Thanks,
George Nixon

Good luck, as Magical Mystery Tour is probably the worst Beatles movie released in their lifetime, although I do like that scene with the girl in it and the I Am The Walrus music video is cool. Anyways, I think The Beatles were in a very hippie-like and childish state, dressing up in pink soldier outfits and walrus costumes and all that stuff that almost reminds me of a mixture of Pee Wee Herman and Ronald McDonald, you can tell they were high on drugs throughout the entire movie.

Tony Barrow wrote a book about it, you may be able to find a used copy.

Start with 1 September on Joe’s page here: https://www.beatlesbible.com/history/10/

I see many cheap used copies of Barrow’s book on Amazon.com but only a few Italian editions on Amazon.co.uk. If you get desperate, I can get a copy and mail it to you.

Remember the movie was filmed with virtually no script. They just wanted to get on the bus and go. The plan for the movie was similar to the plan for the band going forward.

Needless to say it caused problems.

Maybe http://www.beatlesebooks.com can help. As for the state of the band, they were clearly at the peak of their hippie state, taking so much drugs that that they thought that singing in walrus suits was a good idea.

Maybe you should try posting more.

I know West Malling well, a friend lives there.

I have been to the kebab shop.

One thing I would suggest should always be taken into account is Brian’s death. It is what it is because they lost him, and they needed something to do, but would have been very different had he lived to organise it. Brian would have allowed a little madness to invade the structure, while they on their own struggled to get any structure to invade the madness.

I don’t think they would’ve even done a film if Brian was around.

Paul’s way of grieving seems to be immersing himself in his work whether it’s good or bad.
That’s why I think they made Magical Mystery Tour , Paul needed something to occupy the rest of the Beatles (and himself) and get away from the grief itself. (Well, also to get Apple Films running…)

The best one would probably be the BBC Arena special from 2012, although I can’t find that on YT.
