Fortunately, I got to see this on YouTube BEFORE it was being turned on its side… though it was broken into 9 segments.  It might’ve been more interesting if everyone involved was genuinely interested in the project.  As it is, it’s the weakest of their 5 films.

Oh, I have always thought it was the weakest of their films – I would still love to get an official restored print with some nice extras.

Watched this earlier today.

I can understand why Paul thinks he looks bad, but I thought it would be a lot worse than it actually is (or at least appears to me). He does come across as being quite commanding and a bit bossy, but if you have any idea about the Beatles and their split at all (which you probably do if you’re watching this in the first place), then I think you will understand why. Dunno why, after all this time, he’s still so hung up about it and dead set against its release.

The ending more than makes up for the rest of it anyway.

After watching the final episode of “Anthology” last night I am even more mystified.  The whole split is there on the screen, dealt with pretty honestly from what I could tell, including Paul and George having their fight from “Let It Be ” – which makes me wonder why any of them would object to it being released when all the contentious bits are out there on tape / DVD anyway.

Maybe there is a restoration going on and we will have to wait 7 more years for an anniversary release?

Makes Paul’s suppression even stranger when you know that it was George and JOHN who had the real fight that day, including alleged fisticuffs!

GEORGE: In fact, The Detroit Sound. JOHN: In fact, yes. GEORGE: In fact, yeah. Tamla-Motown artists are our favorites. The Miracles. JOHN: We like Marvin Gaye. GEORGE: The Impressions PAUL & GEORGE: Mary Wells. GEORGE: The Exciters. RINGO: Chuck Jackson. JOHN: To name but eighty.

Which was laughed at by both John and George during the Get Back sessions.

It’s probably more an unhappy time for Paul looking back, the same for all of them.

If you read George’s accounts of that whole project, as well as secondhand accounts by those close to him, he seemed FAR more upset with John’s disinterest and the constant presence of Yoko (whom he NEVER got along with) than with Paul’s bossiness. But of course, in typical George fashion, much as I love the guy, it’s easier to just s**t all over Paul, publicly and privately, than to go after Saint Lennon.

Let it Be. That’s what they should have done, simply Let it Be. Allen Klein, Phil Spector, all the business people at Apple, and Paul McCartney . Let the Beatles make their own music. Let Michael Lindsay-Hogg direct his own film. Let John go with Yoko. It would have made it so much easier.

As far as entertainment value goes, Let it Be is not at the top of the Beatles film list; I would say it at least ties with Magical Mystery Tour as far as that is concerned. Yet, Magical Mystery Tour is an easier film to watch. Let it Be is painful, but not for the reasons most people may expect. Yes, it’s true The Beatles were over. Yes, the music they are making is subpar. Yes, they are fighting on screen. All of those might be legitimate gripes, but each are all resolved by the end of the film. We see them playing finished versions of the songs, together as a group, and securing them places in the mythos that is The Beatles legacy. Even a few of the things not resolved (John’s heroin addiction, George’s unrest, and Ringo barely being there) don’t distract from the beauty of the music and the wonder at seeing masters at work. For years, I have wondered what made the film so difficult to watch. Then, just a few weeks ago when I sat down to watch it again, it occurred to me: The reason the film is hard to watch is Paul McCartney .

At this time, the Beatles were broken up. John had learned via his appearance on the Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus that there was a life making music beyond The Beatles. George had learned this whilst producing records for Jackie Lomax and hanging out with The Band at Woodstock. Ringo would get studio work with John and George, as well as release his own album of classic covers, Sentimental Journey. All the while, Paul was losing his army buddies.

There is really only one reason Let it Be happened, and that reason is Paul McCartney . It was his idea to, in order to fulfill their film contract, film the band rehearsing and then recording their new album of material. It was also his idea to continue the stripped down nature of the recordings, as had been evident during The White Album . Now he had his band back together in the studio, and that was the last place in the world they wanted to be. The film Let it Be doesn’t so much showcase the breakup of The Beatles, but rather Paul McCartney desperately trying to hold the idea of The Beatles. His nostalgia for the band overshadows the reality that they were ready to move on. It’s this desperation that makes the film so sad, not necessarily because of what facts are displayed on screen, but rather because we all know the outcome. Those familiar with the history know the eventual bastardization of his album (Let it Be is no doubt his album) would enrage him. The signing over of management to Allen Klein would alienate him. The pushing back of McCartney so as not to interfere with Let it Be would crush him. This was the end of The Beatles, and it was harder on Paul than any other. It is safe to say that Paul got screwed, and we are essentially watching it happen on Let it Be.

I think that it is fitting that despite all the hatred which floated in Paul’s direction at the time, and all of the negative press that was given to his first solo album McCartney, that Paul had the most successful solo career of any of the Beatles. John and George had incredibly strong showings for their first solo records, but with each successive album, the praise waned. Then, here comes Paul, reenergized with his new project Wings and ready to take the world by storm. In a way, the ending of the Beatles which beat Paul down so far only strengthened his resolve to come back better than ever, and by God , he did.

The historical value of Let it Be is not to be understated. As a document, it is as important as A Hard Day’s Night . Preservation is essential, and that has been taken care of. The film has been restored to highest possible quality, according to Michael Lindsay-Hogg, and eventually it will be released. I fear, however, that this will not occur during Paul McCartney ‘s lifetime. When it does eventually come out, it may be hard for the public to look at the film in context, to view it as what it is: a snapshot of the end. The real pain comes from the subtext, and thus perhaps the public will have a better appreciation for the film. The rooftop concert alone is justification. Still, I can’t help but feel a little sorry for Paul while watching the film. No matter what the eventual outcome, it is never a pretty thing to see someones world collapse around them.

Interesting and insightful, @paulramon1962!  Methinks you’re glad you found this place, and I am too 🙂  But I wonder what and if Abbey Road would be, if everyone had “Let it Be” as you describe – particularly “let John go with Yoko”.

EDIT:  One minor correction – Paul has the most successful solo career, not had (and praise to whoever/whatever is in charge of such things that he and Ringo are still going).

And I think George was as upset, if not alienated, by Allan Klein.  Didn’t he talk about being pressured about signing the contract on a Friday night somewhere (Anthology maybe?)?  Yes I know I’m wandering a bit off topic…to get back on:

I still haven’t see Let it Be.  And netflix doesn’t have it 🙁  Amazon has the vhs but apparently it hasn’t been released on dvd yet.  Youtube doesn’t have it, except the rooftop concert and a bunch of disconnected clips that may or may not actually be in the movie.  Oh there is on dvd, at some obscure online shop.  18.99…maybe next month.

Half of what I say is meaningless...

I feel good in a special way, I'm in love and it's a sunny day

@Matt Busby I do recall that later in Klein’s leadership George wasn’t so gung-ho about him, but I’m pretty sure earlier on he was alright with him. Maybe he didn’t lobby for him as John was supposed to have done, but still preferred him to John Eastman.

Let it Be is difficult. I had a copy my father recorded on VHS from a TV airing, and growing up that was what I watched. A friend of mine who owns the local record store had a bootleg VHS made from the Laserdisc release, but the quality was poor. The best i’ve found comes online, and I believe it goes under the name “Let it Be 35mm Deluxe.” It’s a fantastic issue, with the video being almost as good as the video featured in the Anthology. As far as I can gather, the video was taken from a 35mm print that the BBC was given to show on the telly. Someone managed to sneak it out and convert it (I wish I could thank the clever devil.) The sound is compiled from various sources, including album releases, other quality bootlegs, and most importantly, the Nagra reels which contain all 80+ hours of audio recorded with the film cameras. If you can find that copy, which is fairly easy to find online, if I recall, you can burn it to a DVD and have the best currently available version of Let it Be, unless of course your name is McCartney or Starr a-hard-days-night-paul-7

As to what would have happened? Well, we wouldn’t have Abbey Road . Interesting to think about, really. Lennon may never have released Plastic Ono Band, All Things Must Pass might have Something on it (and Here Comes The Sun if George had written it), and McCartney could have possibly been a greater album than we all could have imagined. It’s fun to speculate!

Oh by the way, you’re right! Paul’s solo career is still going strong! I just missed him a few days ago in SLC, but I hope to see him soon. I also can’t wait for his next record.

An interesting time line of the film documenting the important dates from its creation back in January 1969 to the present time.

Dont remember seeing this 2012 quote from Ringo before – “One day that will come out, but we’re not thinking about it right now”. Does’t quite go with so many non-Apple folk saying its being worked on and will be out soon.

I think i should just give up now and start planning for 2017 when Apple ignore the 50th anniversary of ‘Pepper’ – or even worse sanction a box of related outtakes and rarities before cancelling it at the last minute and instead treat us to a limited edition 5 inch 21 carat gold ‘Pepper’ shaker (no salt as that would be distasteful and tacky) that plays the same 15 seconds of the title song when you shake it. Yours for the irresistible price of $6,119.67 (= June 1st 1967).

I seem to remember Ringo saying late last year, around the time of his US book events and live shows, that LIB  was in the works, or words to that effect. I have a memory of posting about it, probably in the news thread, and saying I’d believe it when I saw it. I just can’t face trying to find the post to find exactly what it was he said.

I’ve heard rumors that it’s in the cards for the end of 2014 as well, but we’ve been down this road before…until I have it in my hands, I won’t believe it. I *DO* hope it comes out soon, it’s a bit ridiculous already and the fact that they’re afraid of how it portrays them is a bit silly. It’s readily available through “alternative” channels and most of us who will buy it have already had it for ages via other means anyway. Wish they’d just release it already!
