John Lennon ’s 80th Birthday will be celebrated with LENNON80. – a dedicated, unique pop-up TV channel for the UK and Ireland, launching on the big day, October 9.
The channel will be available 24/7 for a week – on Sky 371 and Virgin 346 nationally, plus Freeview 83 in many parts of the UK, and will feature many rarities including John & Yoko’s 1971 classic ‘Parkinson’ appearance – thought to be lost but now restored and brought back to TV in its entirety.
The channel is the first time that Yoko Ono Lennon and Universal Music Group have collaborated on such a venture, which has been compiled and co-ordinated by music TV director Simon Sadler in conjunction with Lennon/Ono archivist Simon Hilton.
Many months have been spent accessing the Lennon/Ono Archives for classic and rare footage, plus commissioning new content which includes brand new music shows presented by Matt Everitt from 6 Music. Also featured is content from Yoko Ono, including her performance and lecture at the Tate in 2004.
The content includes:
Bed Peace – John & Yoko’s classic autobiographical documentary charting their week-long Bed-In for Peace in Montreal, Canada in 1969.
Parkinson – from 1971 a BBC TV John & Yoko interview thought long-lost, now restored and brought back to TV in its entirety.
The Old Grey Whistle Test – from 1975 a complete episode of the BBC TV music show, including an extensive Bob Harris interview with John Lennon .
The Dick Cavett Show – from 1971 & 1972 two appearances by John & Yoko on ABC’s primetime chat show in the USA.
John Lennon Birthday Concert – from 2015, the Madison Square Garden concert to celebrate John’s 75th Birthday . Starring Brandon Flowers, Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, Sheryl Crow, Aloe Blacc & many more.
Tate Gallery Lecture (2004), Onochord (2003) and IMAGINE PEACE TOWER.
Three documentaries from Yoko Ono – her lecture and performance from the Tate Gallery in 2004, her audience-participatory performance artwork Onochord launched in Venice in 2003 and exhibited worldwide, IMAGINE PEACE TOWER, the artwork she created for John Lennon which illuminates the skies in Iceland every year, from John’s birthday through to the new year.
Brand new music shows presented by 6Music’s Matt Everitt:
John Lennon ’s 25 Greatest Songs – a definitive countdown of the greatest Beatles & solo songs written by John. All 25 videos in their remastered form.
From The Lennon Archive – from John, Yoko & The Plastic Ono Band, less well known music videos & some rare gems from the Lennon family archive, including John’s last live performance in 1975.
John’s Jukebox – an eclectic selection of 70s & 80s tracks that influenced John in his solo years, many of which appeared on his own personal jukeboxes! Including Elton John, David Bowie, Lene Lovich, George McCrae, Bruce Springsteen & Madness.
Music TV Director Simon Sadler said today: “There are not many artists worthy of a channel dedicated to just one name – but John Lennon is certainly one of them. To mark his 80th birthday we’re thrilled to have brought together many classic moments of John’s life – from his life at home, on the chat shows and the peace protests – as well bringing John’s solo music together with the songs he wrote for the Beatles for a rare outing on TV.”
This is going to be fab! Am really excited, nice surprise from the estate.

Just read about this and my reaction was “holy ****”. Very rarely do I get excited nowadays about what is coming out or being done but some of the stuff for John’s 80th is incredible. Good on everyone involved in getting these together.
I know ‘Lennon Legend’ was out there (and still might be) but would love a complete collection of all John’s promo’s remastered including the gems that are rarely seen and are in average quality so maybe something could come out of it. And Beatles promos on TV!!!! That hardly ever happens. A couple of days ago Now 70’s screened George’s promo for ‘This Song’ and I was so thrilled and a while back they also had an hour of solo 70’s promos that I caught a little of. ‘We All Stand Together’ was shown over the weekend on one of the music channels as I had to watch it. All at work. I could watch a Beatles and solo tv channel all day long and not be bored.
Off-topic a little. It’s strange, well not strange but unexpected how I’m now getting excited for the celebrations and sad that John died so long ago so isn’t about for them. Normally I just get on with the day but it shows that if done properly with love and care I will get involved in it. That’s for everything. So often it just feels like a release or anniversary is tossed out with words and items but little real involvement from those doing it outside of ‘well, I suppose we should so here’. ‘Abbey Road ‘ at 50 felt like an Apple obligation following ‘Pepper’ and ‘The White Album ‘ sets. The closer we get to John’s 80th birthday, the more it feels like there is a real want to go all out to remember and celebrate John’s life and career the way it should be. In itself that’s something we should be thankful for.

Looking at the listings on Sky, Lennon80 is taking over NOW80s for the week, a few programmes scheduled already- including Parky, John’s Jukebox and From The Lennon Archive. They will be repeated quite a bit over the week so don’t worry if you miss them the first, second or third go around.
A lot of not-listed spots as well, I’m very excited. I wonder will we get much Beatles content?

Sky confirm the change here.
Now 80s (371) changes name to LENNON80. On his 80th birthday – a 7 day celebration of all things John Lennon . With classic archive shows (one of them long lost), and those Lennon & Beatles tracks that made him one of the world’s greatest.
I think the Beatles content will rightly be focusing on John but will have songs he shares vocals with Paul like ‘A Day In The Life ‘. Would be weird if they were playing ‘Yesterday ‘ since John’s not on it (regardless of what went on in the writing/recording stages). Would be highly amusing tho if we got ‘Maxwell’s Silver Hammer ‘ or ‘When I’m Sixty’.

Have just tuned in my telly to get this now- his 1975 Old Grey Whistle Test interview is on, so lovely to have John on my telly for a week. I hope we get things like this more often.

I’ve just watched most of the Parkinson interview (missed the start as I’ve been working all day) and it’s fascinating to watch John (and Yoko) speak so clearly and concisely over issues like why the Beatles shouldn’t get together and how we could live together peacefully if we didn’t judge others on their race/colour/looks etc. The bag wearing was obviously daft but it helped make the point and it all made a hell of a lot of sense.
Also some of these mixes/songs are different. I caught ‘I Don’t Want To Be A Soldier’ earlier and it opened with the bells from ‘Mother ‘!
I’d be delighted if I could turn on a channel and just watch/listen to random Beatles/solo songs and watch interviews.

Why is the sound on the Beatles videos so bad? Was watching ’25 Greatest Hits’ and ‘Day Tripper ‘ was one channel of the stereo mix whilst ‘Help !’ was one channel and sped up to the point where it was unlistenable.
The other tracks seem fine.
