Without going thru the books does anyone know when the Beatles recorded their inanities over ‘The Barber of Seville’ which is at the end of the film? Would it been been during post-production work on May 18th 1965?
Its a brilliant piece of music by Rossini and the Beatles humour only adds to it: the laughter towards the end is both scary and brilliant and George calling out “”I Need You ‘ by George Harrison ” is wonderful.

I JUST WATCHED THIS FILM!!!! I’d not seen it.
My immensely clean and sneaky granddad caught me eyeballing his turntable and said, ‘You want to hear something that sounds good?’ I unsuspectingly followed him to the living room, where he pushed a button and a lot of Indian chanting came on. I figured it out then. When the title track blasted out I grabbed my guitar and played along, joining the stereo in making a supreme grand and bashy noise.
I enjoyed the film immensely, of course, particularly every single scene that included George Harrison
(spoiler alert)
the bit where George heroically jumps onto that car to rescue Ringo from the boot, and nonchalantly removes the wheel while whistling a tune.
And, of course, I sang along with every tune.

Does this film exist in the same contuaty as AHDN ?
No. The films take place in different universes. One is in black and white and the other is in color.

Was the swimming guy inspired by this?
In Tahiti we were OK; we escaped there. Once we were on the boat, no one got near us – except for one fella from Sydney who we didn’t speak to. He swam with us, saying, ‘Can I come on your boat?’ We said ‘no’ and he had to swim miles back!

I was recently thinking about Help and John saying how they felt like extras in their own film. And I think I understand what he meant. A good percentage of the film features scenes with no Beatles. There are many scenes with the villains doing their thing or Scotland Yard trying to capture them. About how much of the film do you think is Beatle-less?
Also with some tweaks in the script, it can be debated whether this film could have been made with a totally different group. The one major tweak would be to make the sacred object something other than a Ringo ring.
What are your thoughts on this subject? What do you agree with? What is BS? Any other comments?

I think the band could be replaced and the movie would still be able to exist.

But it would be a lot less entertaining!
I’d agree with both of those. You could take the Beatles out and the only difference would be it wasn’t as good.

John probably felt like an extra because of those non-Beatles scenes. Compared to AHDN , our Fabs probably had more idle time. Thus we have the stories of them sneaking back to smoke a joint.
It seems to me that most (but not all) of the lines spoken by Beatles did not reflect their individual personalities. Thus if the Beatles or Brian Epstein rejected this script for any reason, some producer could have done this movie with another group with some minor changes to reflect the new consolation band.
Yes, Help would be less interesting without the Beatles. If some less famous band did the movie, it may be forgotten like those films the Dave Clark Five and Herman’s Hermits did. But we would have an interesting trivia question about our lads. It may be compared to that teen movie the Beatles rejected before AHDN .
PS: All of this discussion does not mean I dislike the film. I always enjoyed it and laughed at the jokes. It just makes an interesting discussion.

Well they WERE Top of the Pops, and James Bond was THE world wide sensation. So, they combined the two in a tongue in cheek “madcap” (I hate that word!) comedy with a Beatles soundtrack. Remember, during the filming, George became fascinated with the sitar & all things Indian. So, props to Help !

I just realised that Roy Kinnear, who played the chubby scientist in this, was in the original Willy Wonka! He played Mr Salt, for those Willy Wonka fans.
