Yeah, it’s pretty ugly but who really cares? It’s not like you’ll be staring at the cover while the discs are actually playing. I’ll reserve my outrage for something like a colourized 3-D version of the film – now that’s an abomination.
Paul: Yeah well… first of all, we’re bringing out a ‘Stamp Out Detroit’ campaign.

Though I wouldn’t mind a 4-D version where I could touch the beatles

I can’t agree with that. I do care. Design is a huge part of it for me. When it could so easily been made aesthetically pleasing, they have made something ugly and tacky – totally unbecoming of what a Beatles 50th Anniversary Edition – and wonderful film -deserves.
If I pay a whopping £20 (or almost) for a blu ray I want it to look good inside and out.

I do agree with you here, but that is kind of like saying Sgt Pepper ‘s would’ve been exactly the same with a simple portrait of The Beatles

A couple of Wogblog entries on the upcoming A Hard Days Night 50th Anniversary releases.
Contrary to earlier reports the screening of the film in Leeds isnt the only one in Europe, it will also be getting shown in Italy (so Leeds or Italy are your options so far if in Europe).
Excerpts from the UK DVD report (in quotes)
The cover
Second Sight approached award-winning design studio La Boca to illustrate a new poster for the release of the film’s new restoration. Second Sight’s Managing Director Chris Holden said:
‘We love La Boca’s work and knew they would be the people to create something special for this iconic film’
The bonus content for the UK dvd is reported on amazon as
In Their Own Voices – a new piece combining 1964 interviews with The Beatles with behind-the-scenes footage and photos
You Can’t Do That : The Making of A Hard Day s Night
a documentary by producer Walter Shenson including an outtake performance by The Beatles
Things They Said Today – featuring director Richard Lester music producer George Martin, screenwriter Alun Owen and cinematographer Gilbert Taylor
Picturewise – a new piece about Richard Lester s early work featuring a new audio interview with the director
Anatomy of a Style – a new piece on Richard Lester s methods
New interview with author Mark Lewisohn
Audio commentary with cast and crew
New 50th Anniversary Trailer
Optional English SDH subtitles for the hearing impaired
and so omits some of the features on the US dvd.
Why? Who the hell knows! Just give everyone the same damn release and stop all this bits and pieces crap. Looks like it may have to be the US import as the one to buy.

OK, when you put it that way, I understand your (and Father McCartney’s) point. I’d be as annoyed as anybody about bad album cover art. For various reasons, I just don’t regard DVD/Bluray covers the way I do album covers – I don’t see them as anything other than functional. Which I guess doesn’t make a lot of sense on my part.
I still think “this has really burst my bubble, I was so looking forward to this” is a bit of an overreaction, but whatever.

No worries, Von Bontee. Sorry if my post came across as confrontational – didn’t mean that at all. Generally speaking I agree with you on DVD/blu ray covers. This one’s different for me because, well… it’s the Beatles. And it’s a 50th Anniversary edition, and because I’m also a fan of Criterion, and think their US edition looks fantastic. I was expecting something very similar and was very disappointed to see something which looks a bit tacky, and doesn’t even look like the fab four on the cover. At the moment I really don’t feel I want to pay nearly £20 for it – I’d rather get the import. But, who knows, maybe the UK edition will grow on me…

Do you already have a Criterion version that you’re replacing? Maybe you can use the outside jacket from that if it’ll fit…or transfer the discs from one package to the other (if they’re the same in number.) I know I’ve done something similar with CDs before!

No, unfortunately. That would have worked a treat. I’ve done the same with CDs too.

50 Years!!
And I can remember the day. I lived off Lisson Grove and word went round that the Beatles were at Marylebone Station which was only a 2 min walk away. I was an 11 yr old kid in a crowd held back but not part of the filming. Knew they were there. Knew they were filming. Didn’t see them. Didn’t know it would become a movie. Never thought that 50yrs later anyone at all would remember the day.
Years later my best friend, not a fan, heard the Rooftop concert……. Not me.
In all those years I only saw Paul once in his Aston Martin. And John once as he entered Marylebone Magistrate’s court with Yoko.
I grew up so close and yet sooo far and a little young. Lucky enough to see all the greats in intimate venues like The Marquee: Hendrix, Clapton, Peter Green, The Who, The Stones, Led Zeppelin, Taste, Free, Jethro Tull, Yes……. Saw Stones and Blind Faith in Hyde Park. But never, never saw the Beatles or the Kinks…….Tragic? NO!…….Annoying YES!
Still I consider myself lucky to grow up amidst all that music. Every week another great song from someone.

Who the hell is that on the cover? Surely it would be better having a photo of the Beatles instead of some horrid tribute act. First Tune In and now this abomination.I do hope that’s the slipcase and we can ditch it for something better inside.
That is truly dreadful.
Here is the American one:

I also don’t like the wacky lettering on the title of the UK version. It makes it look like an 80s caper comedy featuring precocious kids.

OMG he does look like Soupy! I can’t unsee that now, either.
That American one is better, but only just. What’s up with the “Star Trek” font and the overall sci-fi vibe?? It would’ve been so easy & logical to just go with an original 1964 movie poster.

Cause this version of Hard days Nights takes place in SPACE! where the Beatles join Captain James T. Kirk and and explore strange new worlds with the power of rock and roll.
