As we know, the 50th anniversary of the Beatles’ first movie, “A Hard Day’s Night “, is this Summer. Do you think the movie should be re-released in cinemas and/or on DVD? Maybe even in colour?

Re-release and DVD/Blu-Ray yes, its ridiculous the film is out of print, but not colourised. Its a classic b&w film that suits the mood, style, period and feel of the film, adding colour would lose so much of that. And i fail to see what benefit it would bring doing so. Are people today unable to watch a film in b&w? The colourised Laurel and Hardy films are awful.
[There are stories going around by the way that Apple now own the rights to the A Hard Days Night film, don’t know if that’s been mentioned here or not.]
There is a thread on this by the way which includes youtube clips of two songs (running too slow) that have been coloured in.

Hmm – it used to be readily available down here in a decent Miramax 2-disc set; though I haven’t looked in a while since I already have it. They could tweak that set if needed – it has a pretty good picture and sound.
No no no no on the colourised.

I’d love to see a release with the deleted Paul scene, rather than a conversation just talking about the scene. I wonder if the footage has been preserved and they held back, or it ended up in a dumpster.

Wasn’t all the outtakes dumped or was that just a myth? I have read that it was all thrown out with Shenson being the source credited.

I hadn’t heard that. That’s incredibly unfortunate if true.

Yes, that was my understanding too.

I hope they release a DVD, I was always curious as to why I couldn’t find one, but hadn’t researched it, assumed it was a rights issue. If they do re-release, I agree that it should stay in black and white, color would be a completely different experience, and not a better one.
I’m really curious if I could request my local theater to play it for the anniversary… Does anyone think that would be possible?

I’ve got it on dvd, but as it’ll look great on the big screen I’ll go to the cinema and watch it. And the music coming through all those speakers…

Any word on if it’ll be in theaters in the US?
It sounds like the July 4 date will be worldwide.

If i’m and its about i’ll certainly go. The last time it was reissued i went and saw it in the cinema, i think at the Glasgow Film Theatre. Have also seen Yellow Submarine and really should have went and seen MMT.
I do wonder why its a limited edition release of the the dvd and blu-ray however. Films such as these should be available for anyone to go into a shop or online easily and buy it, not faff about trying to find some store or online site that has a copy going spare and/or is charging a fortune as its been deleted.
Will be interesting to see what bonus features, if any, will be included. I believe Apple now own the film rights so hopefully there quite a few goodies to get excited about.

That’s why bothered me! I couldn’t find one easily so I burned a copy from a YouTube video, not because I wouldnt buy it and wanted to get it… Illegitimately… But because there wasn’t a good version available! It is a movie with such great critical acclaim as a movie, not just due to the Beatles popularity, that it should be on sale regularly.
And if there are any of you out there new to the Beatles, guests maybe, that haven’t seen the movie I did say YouTube!
What!? I went to go get the link for you and it’s been removed!
I guess I should be glad I downloaded it in time…
They might’ve remove it because of the rerelease that’ll be coming soon…

Sounds not quite right but its still up. Apple occasionally get a Beatles film taken down, it then reappears a few weeks/months later.
If you can’t the film your looking for on youtube do a google video search for it, should bring it up easily enough.

Examiner has details on what will be included on the upcoming 50th year dvd (single disc) and blu-ray (3 disc) limited release. The article also provides a link to Criterion, the film distributor, which lists what will be on either the dvd or the blue-ray and that is copied below:
- New 4K digital film restoration, approved by director Richard Lester, with two audio options—a monaural soundtrack and a new 5.1 surround soundtrack made by Apple Records—presented in uncompressed monaural and DTS-HD Master Audio on the Blu-ray (dual-format only)
- Audio commentary featuring various members of the film’s cast and crew (dual-format only)
- In Their Own Voices, a new piece combining interviews with the Beatles from 1964 with behind-the-scenes footage and photos
- You Can’t Do That: The Making of “A Hard Day’s Night,” a 1994 documentary program by producer Walter Shenson
- Things They Said Today, a 2002 documentary about the film featuring Lester, music producer George Martin, writer Alun Owen, cinematographer Gilbert Taylor, and others (dual-format only)
- New piece about Lester’s early work, featuring a new audio interview with the director (dual-format only)
- The Running Jumping and Standing Still Film(1959), Lester’s Oscar-nominated short featuring Peter Sellers and Spike Milligan (dual-format only)
- Anatomy of a Style, a new piece on Lester’s approach to editing (dual-format only)
- New interview with Mark Lewisohn, author of Tune In: The Beatles: All These Years—Volume One(dual-format only)
- Deleted scene (dual-format only)
- Trailers
- PLUS: An essay by critic Howard Hampton
- More!

Looks good and pleased to see the ‘Making of’ documentary is included. Not sure if the deleted scene will be the You Can’t Do That clip from the concert that was cut from the film yet preserved thru being shown on the Ed Sullivan Show in May 1964, it is in the ‘Making of’ documentary but i doubt many would want to have to jump thru that to be able to watch it.
Maybe in line with the 50th anniversary the BBC can rescreen ‘Follow the Beatles’, their own making of documentary that had around 20 minutes of footage including the Beatles in Studio 2 in EMI, originally broadcast on the 3rd August 1964. It does circulate out in the world of people.
