I'll have to get my hands on this. Thanks for sharing.
"The best band? The Beatles. The most overrated band? The Beatles."

I've got a DVD of the complete shows already. It's good to see The Beatles' performances, but my word there was some crap on the Ed Sullivan Show. Loads of “words from our sponsors” too – it really gets in the way (or at least it does here in the UK where we've got the ad-free BBC).
I'd be interested to hear the 5.1 mix, though I wonder what it'd sound like. I presume the shows were recorded in mono originally.

Funny you should say that Joe.
As a kid I remember seeing the show every Sunday night (well after the Beatles' appearances I'm afraid) thinking there was a lot of bad acts.
As for the commercials, thank God for inventing the DVR. Still, I think it would be hilarious to compare today's advertisements to those long ago – maybe an advert for Pan-Am airlines or some other non-existent company.
To the fountain of perpetual mirth, let it roll for all its worth. And all the children boogie.

The BBC's ad-free in the UK because it's funded by the TV licence (about £120 a year), and BBC Worldwide sells its productions around the world. You'll see ads on bbc.co.uk if you're outside the UK too.

Not sure how a 5.1 mix can be arrived at from a mono source but there was one on the first issuance too….what sort of hanky panky magic is this?

Well the .1 aspect would just be the bass frequencies. As for the five other channels, I guess they could try and isolate the vocals and put them in the middle. I'm not sure what else they could do.
I think they were in part relying on camera-mounted microphones while recording the first show. Listen to how the drums get louder at the nine-minute mark:
I'm sure they would have taken a feed from the amps as well, and mixed it all in the studio gallery. Whether any multitrack recording was made seems doubtful, but they could always do what Giles Martin did with Rock Band and apply some technical wizardry to separate them.
My guess is: vocals in the middle; instruments left and right in mock stereo (slashing the treble in one channel and the bass in the other); and crowd noise rear left and right. But I guess we'll have to wait and see. Does anyone have the earlier 5.1 release?

I picked the DVD up @ Sams Club over the weekend and watched all 4 episodes. It was kind of weird because the initial episodes seemed to favor Paul throughout. It seemed they paid no attention to John until the September 1965 show, and then John was forgetting the words to Help !. George and Paul seemed to be singing the background vocals louder to try and get John back on track. Too funny. What was sad, was that Ringo got to sing a song and George never got to. Paul even got a solo! I would have liked to seen George sing a couple songs.
I do have the 5.1, but you have to go to the menu and set it up manually. It defaults to the mono. Since my DVD player is not hooked up to my 5.1 receiver, I will have to re-watch… Oh darn!
