Does anyone know of a television performance The Beatles did fairly early in their career where they performed this song on a stage with no audience, where you could see Paul, John and George at odd moments making the various ship noises and nautical comments that spice up the song? If memory serves me, it was black and white and probably was a UK television station.

I’ve never heard of anything like this, any performances of “Yellow Submarine ” – I think that’s probably a false memory of yours. But @meanmistermustard would probably know best; he and Joe are probably the most Beatles fact-filled people here.
GEORGE: In fact, The Detroit Sound. JOHN: In fact, yes. GEORGE: In fact, yeah. Tamla-Motown artists are our favorites. The Miracles. JOHN: We like Marvin Gaye. GEORGE: The Impressions PAUL & GEORGE: Mary Wells. GEORGE: The Exciters. RINGO: Chuck Jackson. JOHN: To name but eighty.

Here’s your thread, @Sea Belt. I’ll delete that other thread. Do you want me to move this topic over to the television etc. sub-forum?

Could be, I’ve had some false memories of the Beatles over the years. The most prominent one was seeing John and Paul doing a TV performance of “Cry Baby Cry “. I looked for it for years before concluding I must have dreamed it or something.

I haven’t seen the performance you reference, but maybe it could be from John’s birthday celebration in Syracuse, NY on October 9th, 1972.
Apparently, later in the evening, John and some friends had a birthday jam session at the Syracuse Hotel. It included Eric Clapton, Jim Keltner, Nicky Hopkins, Phil Spector, Allen Ginsberg, Ringo and others (Paul declined and George could not make it). One of the songs played was Yellow Submarine .
It was captured on film and released as a video called “Three Friends” by Jonas Mekas.

Thanks @Timpetus, I’m sure it’s not 1972 — it was all four Beatles on a stage in a studio. I dimly recall they were wearing their older Beatley clothes (stiff suits). I probably saw it some time around the 1970s, but of course that doesn’t mean it was produced then — I could have just seen some clip that was already a few years old (maybe a decade) at that point.

There is no footage of the Beatles performing ‘Yellow Submarine ‘ at any time. Maybe you’ve mixed it up with another Beatles song or there’s corresponding footage in some documentary with ‘YS’ playing over it.

Although my memory is mostly indistinct, what I do remember clearly is toward the end of the song when all those background nautical commands & noises occur, John and Paul (possibly also George) making those noises with things like bells and a triangle and whistle etc., plus also calling out nautical commands. It was almost like they were doing a radio show where you do sound effects to create the atmosphere of a story.
