God I remember reading ages ago that Paul had seen it and liked it. I don’t have the time to search for it though. I don’t know about Ringo’s reaction to it.
Is this Paul being diplomatic when asked a question as he is very unlikely to come out and say “I went to see it and thought it was ghastly, the covers were abysmal”?

Eh probably, most likely. ATU did some daring scenes for some of the song interpretations so I think they deserve some credit (that and Jim Sturgess is an absolute ride).

Oh God I just saw a horrific film Sunshine on Leith which is the same as ATU but with Proclaimers’ songs (obviously). Oh dear, these things are never good are they? They never seem to have a proper plot just see what the songs’ lyrics are, and form some kind of plot around it.
Also one of the t***s in it decided to propose to his girlfriend at her parents’ 25th anniversary party. God , you don’t do something massive like propose at someone else’s party, it’s not cool!

I recently watched Across The Universe for the fourth or fifth time, and it was once again brillant.
It’s not only the great renditions of our beloved classics, which are faithful and highly original at the same time, but also the imaginative imagery, the visual direction through framing, colours and editing, as well as the affectionate story which take me into some sort of 1960s dreamworld. The visual and musical aspects work together perfectly. It is one of the best films of the 2000s for me. 10 / 10

I just recently watched the movie, and personally I didn’t really like it. The acting wasn’t very good and the plot line seemed pretty scattered. There where a lot of times I didn’t even know what was going on. Like during the Strawberry Fields sequence, I wasn’t sure what they where trying to do there. The music was great though, so that made up for some of the bad acting.

I know that this film isn’t the best and that it has a lot of flaws, but I love it unconditionally. It’s what propelled me into the Beatles for the most part and I’ve seen it five times now and each time I have balled my eyes out.
Like when Jude comes back to find Lucy gone, when Max comes back from Vietnam, when Jude gets deported, when we’re led to believe that Lucy died in the building explosion, and of course the rooftop scene <3 (and countless others)

Good to meet another person of fine taste.
I repeat my previous question:
WHY IS BONO IN THIS FILM!?!?

I heard somewhere that Julie Taymor (the director) just really wanted Bono to be included. So, yeah.

Partially rewatched this this morning for the first time in about 5(?) years. The first 30 mins about Jude and Lucy in New York is decent enough, however the film’s main flaw is it tries to ram too much in. We have Jude and Lucy’s love story, Jude’s dad, Max dealing with the draft, Prudence’s sexuality, Sadie’s career, Sadie’s relationship with Jojo, Jojo’s career, Lucy’s freedom fighting and the war in Vietnam, Bono and Eddie Izzard and drugs, AND the civil rights movement.
Should have just dealt with Jude, Lucy and Max and got rid of the rest or toned it down. The way they dealt with Prudence’s story line is ridiculous as well.
Anyhoo after about an hour, I just fast-forwarded through the rest of it as I got bored and could feel my life ticking away.
The choreography in it is great though that deserves a shout-out. And as previously observed by me, Jim Sturgess is still a ride!

I think it’s a genuine piece of art, it’s a reflection on the the US in the 60s showing just how intrinsic the Beatles music was to the time, it’s visually stunning and for me genuinely moving and the music is well done.
It’s a great artistic response to the Beatles, something of a celebration, filled with joy and suffering. I think it’s way better than the biopics, I like the actors, the story is pretty good, but it is kind of a set of tableaus rather than simply a narrative.
The Beatles to me are very culturally significant but there aren’t that many successful artistic responses to them, so I find this welcome.
