Hmm. Was it that song or the one you mentioned that they were going to use originally?
Edit: According to Joe, it was I'll Cry Instead, but was changed at Lester's request. But I could see You Can't Do That working too. Maybe. Is there an editor in the house?
Ad hoc, ad loc, and quid pro quo! So little time! So much to know!

This is very interesting, ladies. It will be fun to watch that scene muted while listening to each of those songs. I think they would both work.
You Can't Do That is one of my favorite songs on the album.
{side note} – I saw the picture in JET!'s post #11 above and thought- “Awwwwwwwwww, George is wiping the coffee off my chin”.
Not that I look like Norman Rossington – I just thought it was funny.

First, I wish you a belated Happy Birthday .
Second, those are cool movies aren't they?
Third, I'm tearing the celophane off of my newly acquired “Yellow Submarine ” movie tomorrow night.
It's gonna be another Beatley weekend.

I love John's “My names Betty” and the bathroom scene, me and my friends have so many inside jokes with those XD. Also, George's scene with the shirts always makes me laugh, and I would name more scenes I loved, but I would probably be writing the script for the movie.

***1/2. Docked half a star because of a few lame slapstick bits that were already stale in 1964.
Also, I still think the “fire escape” sequence would've been better set to “I'll Cry Instead” than “Can't Buy Me Love”. And why did they have to play it twice?
GEORGE: In fact, The Detroit Sound. JOHN: In fact, yes. GEORGE: In fact, yeah. Tamla-Motown artists are our favorites. The Miracles. JOHN: We like Marvin Gaye. GEORGE: The Impressions PAUL & GEORGE: Mary Wells. GEORGE: The Exciters. RINGO: Chuck Jackson. JOHN: To name but eighty.

Haven’t We already Discussed This? They used CBML Because it was a more upbeat and common Beatles Tune then ICI. I would have Prefered ICI, but that could be because CBML is just…..I don’t like it.

That's interesting Von, because I always felt CBML fit the “running amok” scene better due to the pace of the song. I thought ICI (no, not French for “here”) would have been better used during the “cop chase” scene.
In any event, I do agree they did not have to use the same song twice. This is still my favorite of the Beatles' movies.

What about You Can't Do That? Fast, and Not a repeated song

That is one of my favorite tracks on that album, mr. S. The title of the song would be perfect for a cop chase scene, no? Especially when they show the guy trying to break into a car.
I'm not sure, but I also seem to remember seeing footage of George being interviewed wherein he said that song was one of his favorites to play live. Maybe you or someone else can shed some light on that.

I couldn't find anything funnier than that.

I don't know what footage you refer to, but A quick Youtube search didn't reveal the answer. Perhaps you read it in Anthology? (That Reminds me, now that My Brother's on vacation in Greece, I'll have time to finish it this weekend.)

Lucky you! I still haven't seen it – I saw it in Best Buy for over 100 bucks, but the hell with that! I can buy it on Amazon for half of that (and will, someday soon.)
“You Can't Do That” would've worked just fine for the cop-chase sequence, I agree. Or who knows, even “It Won't Be Long” or some other fast one? (“I Wanna Be Your Man ” and “She Loves You ” were already in the movie so it's not like they were restricted to new-songs-only.)
Paul: Yeah well… first of all, we’re bringing out a ‘Stamp Out Detroit’ campaign.
