I have the UA version on vinyl… but my turntable died a few months back. a-hard-days-night-paul-4

I’m confused about that BBC version… was that a live recording for a radio show or something? Or is that the way the song sounds on the EMI/Parlophone version of the soundtrack? Are you guys saying it’s just a sped up version of the second one?

I really have no idea now. I watched my copy today (this one) and the songs sound normal. I think that BBC one I posted is unrelated to what she was saying.

I love Paul’s grandfather in this movie. He’s such a “clean” looking old man.  And Ringo’s adventure, seems like something he’d really do, lol.

Seeing your AHDN color photo on the previous page made me wish there was a color version.

Seeing the color of the train’s interior above makes me realize B&W is best.

It’s still kinda cool seeing color versions of the old movie scenes. Thanks for sharing.a-hard-days-night-john-3

i feel that color in some 60s movies make them look dated.

I would love to see a colorized version of the film.

As for the soundtrack, yes, the pitch/speed is lower in the film than it is on the UK album, but only for some songs (“I Should Have Known Better “, for example, is at the proper pitch).  It might be, as Joe suggested, that it’s just a question of tape speeds – perhaps they had to slow down the tapes so that it sync’d with the film.  However, these may actually be separate recordings.  I think that’s the case for “If I Fell “.  One of my favorite bits in that song, on the UK album anyway, is the second time John and Paul sing, “and I would be sad if our new love was in vaaiiin“, because Paul’s voice cracks and cuts out early on that last high note.  But in the film, his voice doesn’t do that, which leads me to believe it’s an alternate recording of the song.

Not a bit like Cagney.

Only in the stereo mix. The mono one, which I presume was used in the film, has the line sung flawlessly.

Not flawlessly…it was corrected. Ot was not corrected in the stereo mix. The way it was corrected was Paul’s backing vocal from the other occurence of “vain” was dubbed in.

Hey Happy Nat, with your site and all, do you think you could post some outtakes?

Um, I’m supposing you mean out-takes of If I Fell , right (just making sure that’s what you mean)? I have plenty of other out-takes on there already. Just clarify that’s what you meant and I will see what I can do. I don’t have any early Abbey Road takes, but I do have all the BBC takes, a whole bunch of live versions, a composing tape of John’s with a few versions of just him and a guitar working it out,  an alternate mono mix that is only single tracked vocals and, of course the standard stereo and mono mixes.

Bringing you the best and worst of The Beatles, since 2007.

I might be able to help here. Tapes of the mono mixes were given to United Artists and Capitol to be used in the film and soundtrack in the US.

As United Artists (UA) made the film, George Martin and EMI weren’t responsible for how the songs were used in the film beyond recording and mixing them. The playback of the songs in the film was, presumably, down to UA. Perhaps when they assembled the film versions their tape machines were set to play at a different speed, or they thought for some reason it sounded better.

Here are some links about the mixes for the soundtrack, which were given to UA:

https://www.beatlesbible.com/19…..your-name/ (mixes for both EMI and UA/Capitol)

https://www.beatlesbible.com/19…..ays-night/

https://www.beatlesbible.com/19…..aid-today/ (tape compiled for UA/Capitol)

I’ve never heard the United Artists version of the AHDN soundtrack. If anyone here has a copy, could they let us know whether the songs are at different speeds/pitches as well?

I have the United Artists version of the soundtrack. The songs are not lower in pitch on the album.

Perhaps they slowed the songs down in the film to make the movie a little longer?

The colours in that AHDN pic look a little oversaturated, though I may be wrong. The suits seem blue, whereas they were actually grey: http://www.beatlesuits.com/Bea…..DNsuit.htm

Thanks RonnieRIG. Intriguing. Maybe it really was just the way the songs were played back when they were editing the film. I can’t imagine they really would have slowed them down to lengthen the film, as there were unreleased scenes they could have used instead.

Blue suits?! Whoa…and an orange helicopter? I, too, never would have thought that.
