I think it’s a mockup. If you look at the top of the spine it says “All”, suggesting they forgot to add the rest of the lettering.
Unfortunately, I think it’s not a mockup. “all” would be on the spine of the first book, “these” on the second and “years” on the third.
On the plus side, I guess it means we can design our own custom covers. What are the dimensions again? May as well get started….
Are you involved in the book’s publication at all?
I’m not sure why or how it’s “absolutely relevant to the contextual timeframe”. Since the first book covers pre-1964, and the series presumably ends around 1970, why not something that draws stylistically from that era? There’s *so* much that any decent graphic designer could have done with this, but Little, Brown seem to have missed an opportunity.
People may not be prattling on about the cover for too long. I bet the publisher will change it before the paperback edition comes out. At least the content will be consistently good.

Hi folks, first post over here although I’ve been reading the forums for a while now.
My bet on the cover: The ALL wording on the spine is probably going to be part of ALL THESE YEARS, that can be read when all three volumes are put side by side. My guess…
And the cover itself, well… not my cup of tea but effective all the way. The kind of cover that jumps to you at a bookstore full of other covers trying to catch your attention.
Still, I just hope the extended edition I’ve already preordered looks a little bit better.

Welcome Stone!
I agree with yourself and Benn Laidlow’s suggestion that the idea is to have the overall title running across the three volumes when placed on a bookshelf.
If so, that’s the only likable bit of the cover. The rest, in my humble opinion, is atrocious. Just awful.
I, too, am hoping the extended won’t have the same cover. Unfortunately I think it will.
Again, welcome! Should you wish to introduce yourself to the forum, tell us something about you, there’s a thread for that in “All Together Now “. You’ll find us a very friendly bunch on the whole.

Agreed. That’s what I’ve been thinking, based on Lewisohn’s prior work we at least know *not* to judge this book by its cover!
I’m confused now, though…it’s showing up on Amazon.co.uk in 2 editions, the 800 page one and the 1800 page one, but on the USA Amazon.com, only a 1200 page version? Huh?

That…sure is odd. Maybe that’s just a typo?
I hope that’s all it is and not a weird US-specific edit of the book!

I thought Pete Best was replaced by some guy called Ritchie who turned out not to be good enough so some Perdie chap took the reigns secretly.
John, Paul, George, and Bernie, at least in the studio, innit?

New details on the first volume from Steve Marinucci of the San Francisco Examiner: he says that according to Mark Lewisohn, the first volume will go up to December 31, 1961. I thought the publisher had said the end of 1962?
Also, the U.S. regular edition will be longer than the U.K. regular edition by 50,000 words (it’s not clear if that is just due to endnotes, which are included in the U.S. edition but not the U.K. edition — 50,000 words sounds like A LOT of endnotes). But the extended “author’s cut” will be available only from the U.K. “for at least this year” because the U.S. publisher hasn’t decided to take it yet. Fortunately the author’s cut will not be a limited printing — they will print more if they run out.

Only up to 1961? That sounds good as there’s a slight lack of any in-depth book that goes into their childhood’s and the Hamburg days. I would’ve thought it would go up to the end of them though.
And what’s this about the US version being longer? 50000 words does sound like a lot of extra end notes (I take it that is like the thank yous and stuff).
Moving along in our God given ways, safety is sat by the fire/Sanctuary from these feverish smiles, left with a mark on the door.
(Passover - I. Curtis)
It’ll be citations, references, explanatory notes that didn’t fit as part of the linear narrative, that sort of thing. Which makes me wonder what’s in the UK extended version that’s not in the US edition. More info in the main part of the book, I presume. It’s a shame the publishers couldn’t be more consistent.

Volume 1 ends 31 December 1962, the date that has been the presumed date for the longest time, and the date that makes most sense as all the pieces are in place. I was about to comment that I thought 31 December 1961 could have been a typo in the article, as 31 December 1962 has always been the rumoured end date for Volume 1. Went to look at the article before making the comments, and it’s been changed.
