Maybe Amazon got the whole of the first edition print run because they had so many orders, and it was already on its second run before it was even published based on advance orders?
I think that may be right, or something close. Amazon most likely bought the bulk of the initial stock.
That’s interesting that yours was also a reprinting so soon, Joe.

So glad you have it, ffe! I recommend a slow read though, lots and lots to take in.

I’m really thinking about buying the standard edition. The extended one is just too expensive. I don’t know, do you miss a lot if you buy the normal one? It does have all the same information, only less detailed right?
I have the standard and it has all I need to know about the period covered; I even found the level of detail a bit tedious at times so, for me, certainly wouldn’t want any more.

Saw my parents at Thanksgiving and they told me the copy of the deluxe edition they ordered to give me for Christmas arrived…can’t wait for it! I am absolutely going to read it all over again even though I’ve already read the standard version.

Having read the standard, and being about a third of the way through the deluxe, the deluxe is just such a better book. Notice, there’s lots of people saying they’re happy with the standard who haven’t read the deluxe. Show me who’s read the deluxe that says they wish they’d stuck with the standard?

I can’t afford the deluxe version, so I’ll have to stick to the standard one. From what I’ve read it’s generally accepted that the deluxe one is better, but is just very very mild trivia or some great revelations?
"White Album - My joint-fave Beatles album along with Revolver. They show the two sides of Beatles. Revolver's very controlled - even though it's also very innovative. The White Album's playful and almost ramshackle. It's like a scrapbook kept by a genius. Fantastic stuff."

There are, so far as I have read so far, any of the “great revelations” held back from the standard, nor would I say that the deluxe adds “very very mild trivia” to pad it out. The deluxe just allows Lewisohn to explore his themes, ideas, history, and suggestions in far greater depth. I would be happy with the standard if that was all there was, it would be a revelation, but the deluxe allows Lewisohn to play out his thoughts and arguments in full with every bit of evidence he has.

More from the LA Times about Lewisohn. Noticeably this (not a spoiler, at least not for the current book):
As part of his in-depth research, Lewisohn also has debunked a humorous knock on Starr’s drumming abilities, long attributed to John Lennon . For decades, people and media outlets have repeated the anecdote about Lennon being asked whether he considered Starr to be the best drummer in the world. The oft-quoted response: “He’s not even the best drummer in the Beatles.”
While it sounds like the kind of acerbic comment that might have come out of Lennon’s mouth, Lewisohn says no.
“The London Times newspaper quoted John Lennon ‘famously saying that Ringo wasn’t even the best drummer in the Beatles.’ John Lennon never said that, famously or otherwise, and that is the London Times quoting him,” Lewisohn said, making a point about his motivation for trying to separate fact from Fab Four mythology.
“For me, it’s [a case of tracking down] when did he say this? I’ve heard every John Lennon interview, I’ve read every John Lennon interview, I never saw that quote. So when did he say it, let alone when did he famously say it?” he said. “I determined to get to the bottom of it. And it’s actually a TV comedian’s joke from three years after John was killed, in 1983. So John Lennon never said it — and wouldn’t have said it.”
Edit: Realized it’s a bit of a repost, as Joe quoted Lewisohn’s debunking of the quote from an interview earlier in this thread.

Well, I can’t really afford the deluxe edition. It’s 160 euros, while the standard edition is only what? 30? I would love to have it, but 160 is just too crazy for me to spend on a book.
But you never know, maybe I’ll change my mind in the near future.

I totally understand the cost side of it, Linde.
For me, getting it at the cheaper pre-publication price Amazon had, it still cost me around 2/3rds of what I have coming in a week.
My response was more based on comments about the Standard being enough (and it is a great book) without having seen the Deluxe.

I’ve begun to read this and oh how I love it! About 100 pages in and I haven’t even got to their births yet – fantastic! The detail is so mind-boggling if it were anyone but Lewisohn I wouldn’t trust it! I’m very happy I went with this one over the standard edition
