Sorry, Parlance, missed your post.
Like Joe said. You buy and redeem Book Tokens in bookshops, for various denominations. They’ve been here for years and years, and I usually get them for christmas or birthday, (despite working in a library!) I usually save them up and buy a really nice edition of a favourite book in Waterstone’s.
The last few years, they’ve been given out to school children here on World Book Day, which is pretty cool. The great shame is that the so-called online ‘booksellers’ such as Amazon and Waterstone’s don’t accept them. Indeed, the only online retailer which accepts Book Tokens, I believe, is hive.co.uk.
Waterstone’s, WH Smith’s and pretty much all other high street bookshops accept and sell them, though.
I had no idea there’s not something similar in the US – that surprises me. (I seem to remember Dolly Parton, of all people, runs some kind of national books-for-children scheme – or am I going mad?)

My review of Tune In (ignore if you’re determined to avoid all spoilers).
Thanks for the spoiler alert, my friend. I want so badly to read your review (I enjoy all of your articles), but…
I hate wishing my life away, but is it 29 October yet?!?!
To the fountain of perpetual mirth, let it roll for all its worth. And all the children boogie.
I’ve had a couple of glasses of wine and re-read it, and it feels a bit wordy and over-written. I think I might try and simplify it when I have a moment. Trying to cram too much in. Oh well.

We certainly have gift cards as mentioned above, but from the word “national” it sounds like the government is involved with the book tokens somehow?

I’m halfway through it and I like it so far.

DrBeatle- hope I enjoy reading the book as much as reading your review. Excellent!
Aw, thanks for the kind words! I’m sure you will enjoy the book, it was literally one of those “can’t put it down” kind of books, and not just because it’s about the Beatles. I cannot WAIT for volumes 2 and 3.

Love your review, DrBeatle! I’m sure summarizing the book is a daunting task and both you and Joe do a great job.

Thank you for the kind words . I think Joe will agree with me that the book exceeded expectations. It was even better than I expected, and I don’t think anyone here, there, or anywhere ( ) will be disappointed with it.

Great review, Dr! Between you and Joe, I feel my resolve being weakened, and the temptation growing not to wait until the “Deluxe” drops on the doormat but to head for Waterstones and get the standard when it comes out, just to keep me going until the heavy thud of the “Deluxe”!

There was a lot of talk on the Steve Hoffman forums that the book is pro-Lennon and anti-Paul (and Joe can chime in on this since he posts over there) but I didn’t find that to be the case, I found it to be very balanced. It just can’t be denied that John was the “leader of the gang” in the early days, the one they all looked up to (and maybe even slightly feared crossing), and Paul did rub some people the wrong way (Stu in particular). However, if anyone comes out looking worse than before, I say it’s Pete, although I don’t feel bad about this. I think it’s been UNDERSTATED how shitty a drummer and personality he was during his time in the Beatles. Especially as I’ve been listening to Pete-era bootlegs…man, was he lousy!

The talk on SH was really by someone who worried that it would be too pro/anti L/M, but they hadn’t actually seen the book. I think the worry was caused by the Mojo review. I didn’t really detect any bias – Lewisohn’s too good at his job for that. If someone was behaving badly or doing something particularly good, it’d get mentioned regardless of who it was.
Nice review btw.

Thanks, Joe. Likewise…I really enjoyed reading yours.
I agree, I think the Mojo review was typical in taking a dump on Paul and worshipping John, but Lewisohn himself in the book didn’t do that. And as much a Paul fan as I am, I can readily admit and accept he probably was a pain in the ass to many people in those days, as was John, George, all of them. It’s just a fact and Lewisohn is honest and impartial. To compare him to Philip Norman, for example, as some on there have done, is ludicrous.

I just wondered how many Fab Forumites who have got the special edition on order (like me) went into Waterstones and purchased the standard edition because they couldn’t wait. I’m trying to be very strong and patient here but it’s proving difficult…
Oh it’s not difficult for me at all because
A. Can’t buy anything without money
B. It’s nowhere over here.

I have no desire or interest in buying the Standard edition, am prepared to wait for November 14th, to me that is the release date.
