An excellent review of the book in the The Guardian newspaper by John Harris (one of my favourite music writers):

Non-EU people avert your gaze.
The extended deluxe edition is available for £60 from The Hive, with free delivery to a local independent bookshop in the UK (they don’t seem to post anything out). It’s a £15 saving on the Amazon listing, and the cheapest I’ve yet seen. I’ve not used the site before but I think I’ll give it a go – they give a percentage of all sales to independent book sellers.
EDIT: my mistake, they do free delivery for UK orders over £25, and for £4.99 within the EU. Order placed.
Non-EU people can come back now.
Also, marklewisohn.net is now live, and there’ll be a separate site for the US edition of the book (nothing there yet).

It doesn’t work for me. “Are you in the UK or in the US but have lots of patience?” I’m in the UK but it’s telling me to wait for the US deluxe edition (not a chance).
With me, it’s not a matter of having no patience. Having grown up in the ‘lack of technology’ age, I am used to waiting/delaying gratification, waiting for the next great album to hit the stores as a kid.
What I now go through, with all of the foolishness of releasing different versions of albums/books/what have you, is the fear of missing out. Having all of these choices to make over this book is complete bovine droppings. The money hungry anal openings who made this decision should be ashamed of themselves. Just give us all the same books at the same time for Christs’ sake.
I go back and forth between who I’m really the most mad at – the rectal cavities who made the decision, or me for falling into their trap by ordering both versions. If an even bigger version comes out in the US in February (not yet confirmed), I’ll be even madder…as I shell out more money for it…you know I will.

I’m sure people know this, but just in case – that patience line (as was the “more cash than sense” line) was a joke and as much directed at myself as anyone.
Anyway, it says a lot about the publishers that even a flowchart doesn’t make this any easier to understand.

Forgive me, I’m confused ….is there supposed to be a deluxe US version that’s even LARGER than the deluxe UK version??
No. As of now, there is not going to be ANY US deluxe, but if there is (there is a rumor there will be) it’ll be identical to the UK deluxe.

I’ve only even read of the deluxe being issued in the US in one or two places, and neither made it sound like it was likely. I’m guessing/hoping that since ’63-’70 has been MUCH more extensively documented, that Mark’s research should be a little easier than trying to dig out documents from pre-’63, but that’s just a guess of mine.

I wonder if the US will get Deluxe volumes 2 & 3 if the publishers decide not to authorise the first. Presumably its a case by case decision. I cant help thinking that with the whole hoopla over the 50th First Visit in February 2014 that it will come out as there will be so many celebrations and events going on, no need to publicise and the name Beatles will be everywhere.

I think you are right there, mmm. Lewisohn has said that Crown (the US publisher) are yet to take up their option on the Deluxe (about three months ago) but may choose to do so in the future. I think Crown’s observations on how the Deluxe does outside the US, whether they choose to at some stage take up their option or not, will decide their decision on the Deluxe for 2 and 3. As I have said before, all of you who would be buying a US print of the Deluxe ought to be e-mailing Crown over why they have yet to pick up their option, and asking whether they really think American Beatle fans are any less demanding than those in the rest of the world. Maybe then there won’t be these questions and confusions when it comes to 2 & 3. Blame the US publisher.

The US seem to get so much we in the UK don’t, what with all the merchandise (ok I don’t care about that stuff but that’s how it appears at times). So its strange that publishers are waiting to make a decision about a book that so many people are so looking forward to and will have so much hype, so it has a feel of lets wait until the mania really kicks in. I don’t get why as fans will still order it now by getting imports. Its just a puzzling decision.

Also, the US market is way bigger than the UK’s. Far more Beatles fans than we have here.
Maybe Vee-Jay Books will issue it first, and Crown will wait for books two and three

LOL!
And Crown will say that they don’t think The Beatles will do anything in this market before jumping on a passing bandwagon!

Found this long interview with Mark quite by chance:

It’s from a New Zealand website.

Thanks. That’s a really interesting interview. I’m glad he debunks the supposed “famous” Lennon quote “Ringo’s not even the best drummer in The Beatles,” because I get really annoyed at seeing it all that time.
