So someone sees a different cover, thinks “oh I don’t have that, fantastic” and buys it (or for someone else as a gift) ensuring more cash for the publisher.

Good thinking. That is a very likely scenario. And, as you said, one the publisher(s) hope will happen. Where do thoughts like this put us on the cynical scale?

Being a Beatle fan and therefore inevitably linked to Apple you become cynical thru all the crap merchandise they license at top wack as well as the limited good stuff which they also charge you top dollar for. There was once a time, a few years before the 20009 remasters, when buying Help ! new on cd in your local high street music store cost you £16 and a double album was £28. £28 fecking quid for The Blue Album !!!

Thanks for the heads up as I am rather new to all of this world of Beatledom. You are all great guides in this forum who have inhabited this world for some time.

Here in the US the Blue and Red are still very pricey…$25 at the cheapest stores I can find it at. I blanch at buying the remasters (I have the original CD versions) since they could easily be fit onto 1 CD!

I don’t think it’s all that likely, as the different covers won’t be on sale in the same country. Also, if anyone buys an expensive book with the same title as one they already have, and don’t realise it’s the same apart from the different artwork, then frankly they’re a bit daft.

 Too true, Joe!

I do think the backlash Lewisohn/his publisher have gotten from having so many different editions and a huge price differential may have taken them by surprise. It seems like every forum and messageboard I look at across the internet, people are very displeased with having to either accept the inferior edited version or pay through the nose for the expanded edition. While I highly doubt this’ll change anything for the next 2 volumes, I do wonder if it’ll at least make them think about it a little bit beforehand.

International travel. Globalization. A business traveler buys the book at JFK, leaves it in his London hotel room, and the hotel gives it to a 2nd hand bookstore in London. It might could happen.

I’m now reading rumors online that there *may* be the deluxe uncut version released in a US edition as well? It’s supposedly under discussion but not clear either way.

Man, what a ridiculous policy they’ve got with 3, and potentially 4 DIFFERENT versions of the book. I don’t mean to keep harping on it, but it’s really a pain in the ass how fragmented it all is.

That has been known for some time. I believe I talked about it earlier in thread when talking about the US edition. Lewisohn stated when talking about the US edition that the only reason it existed was because the US publisher hadn’t picked up their option on the “deluxe” edition, but had said they may do at a later date. The truth is that much of this is down to the US publisher.

Had they taken the “deluxe” at the start, there would just be the “standard” and “deluxe” (albeit maybe with variations in cover artwork).

Yip, this shouldn’t be a surprise; a US deluxe edition was always coming. It will be the same as the UK deluxe so thankfully there wont be a super-deluxe costing $250.

Sorry guys, I must have missed it earlier in the thread. I’d like to know for sure sooner rather than later…buying a US deluxe would be cheaper than shipping and the exchange from the UK.

What I saw is that it hadn’t been decided, but that if the US deluxe edition did come out, it would be February.  Has anything changed?

Nope, that’s what I’ve read as well.

I don’t like being in the dark, so I’d rather order the UK edition.  We could wait until February just to find out it’s not being released, and by then copies of the deluxe edition could be scarce and even more expensive.

I haven’t pre-ordered anything because I’m so confused.

Does anyone know if Kindle versions are transferable? If I had someone in the UK order the super deluxe Kindle version, could they send it to me? Or mark it as a gift to send me directly? Or would the UK version not open in the US? In other words, is the reason the webpage says, “Kindle titles for your country are not available at Amazon.co.uk” just for sales reasons or would the file actually be protected in some way to not open on my computer? Hope that makes sense.

Lewisohn has said that the deluxe is not in any way a limited edition, that there will be new print runs of it as needed.

Well, that’s good to know I suppose, but it actually makes my decision harder.  Hard to know whether to wait three months from November…at least I have several weeks to think about it.  Hopefully there is an announcement before my book ships.  Nothing about buying this book is easy.

I just did a chat with Amazon UK, and I got the answer to my question:

Kindle content is available for the customer residing in UK ,Ireland and Gibraltar residence only.

I guess they’re DRM-protected. Nuts. I guess I’ll wait until February and read spoilers in the meantime.
