Yeah, I went back a couple of pages in this thread and saw the details…thanks, mja.
Maybe Capitol records somehow got involved and they plan on holding back enough material to make this a 4 volume set (Meet the Beatles! anyone?).
Then, 5 years after all 3 UK and 4 US volumes have been released, we will be able to buy the remastered versions in both UK and US versions (the differences being in spelling of certain words; colour vs. color). 5 years after that, we can buy the 10th Anniversary editions which will be bound in skin grafts from Lewisohn’s ass.
Marketing people suck.
Oh…don’t forget the freebie incentives to buy each version (right mmm?). Can’t wait to get my officially licensed Beatles dog poop collection bags.
Can you tell I am dismayed about the reality of having to buy 1,548,957 and a half issues of this?

Im guessing Capitol get their hands on it a few months later, rearrange all the words for their own unique story, taking away a lot of the original feel and intent of the story and some readers never get the original and swear its better ‘Capitolized’.
Beatle dog poop collection bags are a must for any dog owner and Beatle fan – £1.99 each or 2 for a £3.97 (Apple being known for their bargains and reasonable pricing structure for Beatle fans). Zig, you’d better copyright it quickly.

To rant even further…
How can the US/UK/UK Deluxe versions vary by the number of words? Either something happened worth writing about or it did not.
Did something happen to the Fabs in one country that they don’t want the other country to know about?
Is the country that is getting less words in the book deemed to be less intelligent and they wouldn’t understand the omitted words anyway?
What words were omitted? Song title words? Are we forced to read who overdubbed vocals on to “She Loves”? Are we forced to read who played the cow bell in “Everybody’s Got To Hide Except Me And My Monkey”? Are we forced to read about the inspiration behind the song “Hey”?
It’s a non-fiction book for Christ’s sake. Give us all the same details.
I WANT TO KNOW WHY, DAMMIT!!!
Thanks for listening. Unless you are getting the version with less words. In that case: Thanks for.

Im going for Lewisohn has been inspired by Only Connect with the UK version having one chapter missing all the vowels and the spaces being altered, you have to fill them in yourself. To get the answers you are forced to buy the US or deluxe versions.

So far as I can see, Zig, the people to blame for this situation are the US publisher. Lewisohn is very specific when he talks about the “author’s cut” not being published in the US. He says the publisher has not “taken” it, but that they may choose to do so at a later date. I’m sure that had the US publisher taken the “author’s cut”, the editions on both sides of the pond would be the same. However, seeing that the US publisher wouldn’t take the “author’s cut”, he came up with a hybrid for the US market, which includes some additional information that he wants US fans to have access to that, in the UK, he has reserved for the “author’s cut”. Blame the US publisher for not thinking the US audience would buy the more expensive “author’s cut” with everything in it.

Oh, there was no doubt in my mind that the decision was made here in the good ol’ USA.
Marketing a******s here in the US are always trying to tell us what we want or don’t want. Drives me bonkers.

Of course, the irony is, the best standard is the US version, because Lewisohn has gone out his way there, better than the standard UK, while the ultimate version is the UK “author’s cut”! If I was you, I’d be emailing, who is it?, Little Brown, something like that, and asking why they aren’t offering you the “author’s cut”. The more they’re questioned, or threatened with losing business by getting an import, the quicker they’ll take up their option.

Little, Brown are the UK publishers, not guilty in this case. Crown are the US publishers.
Can’t you just order it from Amazon.co.uk? The price is steep at the moment, but it’ll come down before publication. The standard UK version is already down from £25 to £18 and I expect the uncut version will drop too (I bloody hope so, as I’ve pre-ordered it). I’ve no idea about postage, but I know of people who ordered the forthcoming Harry Nilsson CD boxset from amazon.co.uk as it was half the price of .com, and they only paid £5 for delivery.

Sorry, my bad! Couldn’t be bothered to look back to see which was which. Little Brown jumped into my head, and because I was thinking US publisher, I thought that’s why. Complain to Crown!

I’m torn on whether to just suck it up and go with the inferior and shorter US version, or pony up and pay out the arse for the UK version. Since it’s the Beatles, I’ll probably do the latter, much to the chagrin of my bank account :-/

You preordered the 2000 page edition for $27? Because I’m in the USA as well and only the 1200 page US-edition is going for that much right now.

I will certainly look into that, Joe as I do have Amazon’s Prime service, so maybe it won’t be as bad as I thought. I was thinking the shipping might cost me more than the book itself. Thanks for the tip.

Just been on Amazon US and they now have the special edition for Kindle up for preorder – currently $42.49. A lot cheaper and lighter than UK version. Page count is the same.
Thanks for the tip! I think I’ll grab that on Kindle and keep the US version preordered…even combined, that’s $70 for the hard copy US book and UK Kindle together vs. $200 for the hard copy UK book!

Here you go, I’ve put my preorder in!
Thanks! That’s odd, though, it says pricing information not available now. Don’t know if anyone else sees this. And I downloaded the app, so it shouldn’t block me.
