^^^ Well that’s annoying I thought Lewisohn said earlier that the extended edition is not a ‘limited edition’ and if it sold out- another load would be printed.
Yeah, I said the same when Expert Textpert posted about this at the news thread. 🙁 Wish we’d gotten some warning.
Owners of extended editions, ye might have a collector’s item in a couple of years time
I’d say they have one now.

After reading a little bit in the extended edition this morning, I began reflecting on how my experience of reading this book is vastly different from the experience of our forum members with advanced degrees in Beatleology. I don’t know which parts of this book are “common knowledge” and which parts are new revelations (outside of seeing Lewisohn’s footnotes of course). An example: On page 112, the text says that John insisted on giving “squeakers” to Uncle George before going to bed. This isn’t new information to many of you, but it was to me. I did take time to look up John-Uncle George squeakers and found out that this story has been told in Beatles books before.
I would love to hand my copy to one of the learned ones and watch as they deftly and assuredly mark my book to show me which parts break new ground. I’m sure I would sit there with eyes wide and mouth ajar watching a master at work.

That’s interesting. I guess one way to check is to see the footnotes. If he cites a previously published source, chances are it’s fairly common knowledge. If it says “Author interview” or similar, then it’s likely brand new research.

Thanks for your thoughts on my dilemma, Joe. That squeakers story really threw me. Lewisohn doesn’t give any references for it; hence, I guess I should have assumed it was common knowledge. I will be a more astute reader of the book going forward.

I reckon the ESEs of the next two books are going to sell out very quickly. I’ve seen it before with these sorts of things (eg Bruce Spizer’s books) – a book gets published and word of mouth makes it popular, then it sells out and the price inflates. A couple of years later the same author releases a new title, the fanbase has grown, and pre-orders alone are enough for most or all copies to go in a flash.
Of course with Lewisohn they could extend the print run or even reprint it – it’d be odd if they didn’t, unless they were making a loss on each copy. It’ll be interesting to see what Little, Brown do with Tune In, and if the next title is a ltd edition too.

It is hugely disappointing that ML is now questioning whether or not there will be a reprint of the Extended Edition, and is likely to make the Extended Edition version of Volume Two much more difficult to get – as Joe has said.
It will also make it much more difficult to believe pre-publication statements ML makes before Volume Two, as he did clearly state to The Examiner (May 17 last year) that the Extended Edition would not be limited:
“It’s too early to say how many author’s cut books will be printed. Little, Brown will assess that in due course,” he said, “But it won’t ‘sell out’ –- that is, it isn’t a limited edition, and more will be printed if stock runs low.”
If he says the same next time, unless there is a reprint of this one, why we would believe he’s not been taken in by a publisher’s assurance once again?

Its common practice for out of print or unavailable books.
You can buy a new copy of the long out of print ‘The 910’s Guide to the Solo Beatles Outtakes‘ for the completely insane price of $472.36 (+ $3.99 p&p), far cheaper used copies are out there.

Oh, I know, totally. I saw Derek Taylor’s book that was published by Genesis in a shop going for $2100, and I’m told that’s on the low end. It’s just for a book that doesn’t bear the stamp of an actual Beatle (or traces of DNA, as it were), it boggles my mind that anyone would be willing pay so much.

The only reason I’d want Beatle DNA is so I could clone them, and maybe bring back John and George.
If anyone has a book containing Beatle DNA, or has a cloning lab, please PM me.
Uh-oh. Have you seen the story about the dentist with John’s tooth? …and the forum’s reaction to to possible cloning of John. Nope. Nope. Nope. Please, no. Banish these thoughts from your brain. You’re too important for us to have to get out mmm’s pitchforks and torches and run you off.

Funny timing, The Examiner posted an article on the shop I was referring to.

Nice interview You can just see the love for the Beatles radiating out of Lewisohn.
My birthday showed up in the book. April 19. George started at Dovedale Road school. It is neat that John and George had some of the “same teachers and similar experiences to reflect upon.”
