I’m about 250 pages through the US Edition and this book is my new addiction!  I am someone who is rarely late…especially for work.  I’m the Type-A personality who is typically 5 minutes early.  This damn book has made me late for work twice! HA!

Nice – just don’t get the sack – while you could finish the book more quickly you might not be able to afford the next one :)

In the opening chapter “Another Lennon-McCartney Original”, Lewisohn mentions the poster over John’s bed. That makes me wonder if Aunt Mimi had to go into John’s room and tidy it up or if John kept it clean. Did Aunt Mimi  have to go pick up dirty socks off the floor of his room or take the sheets off his bed for the wash? Did she have to look at that poster especially given that one long conversation we had recently about Aunt Mimi’s love life? Did she approve of him having it there? I wonder how she felt about John’s active sexuality?

Are these questions answered later on in the book? I’m thinking probably not.

My Mum has bought me this for Christmas. You’d think she’d let me have it early but sadly not! I tried to reason with her. I’m 30 years old, I don’t care about having presents to open on Christmas day. I don’t even like Christmas! It fell on deaf ears a-hard-days-night-paul-11

However, I did get to have a sneaky peek at the pictures and there are some corkers! I seriously cannot wait to read it. May just be totally anti social on Christmas day and sneak off to have a read. Or I could feign illness. Pretend to over indulge on drink and food and need a lie down? It may just work!

I finished the Standard Edition of this book (all 803 pages).  I LOVED it and was sad when it was done.  Gawd knows how long we will wait for volume two? It won’t be soon enough for me.  Now, onto the stack of other Beatle books purchased waiting to be read.

Any one else finished?  Comments?

I’m on page 270 and enjoying it immensely. The level of research is nothing short of staggering, and how Lewisohn has managed to marshal so much disparate information into something not just logical and linear but also so stylistically lyrical amazes me.  He a superb biographer/(social) historian, yes, but also a fine writer.

My sole gripe so far – if I must have one – is limited to the photographs, which I find disappointing both in volume and variety/subject matter.

But, yeah, its really Gear.

I’m glad I only have the Standard as I found it slow going – and I am a voracious reader.  Overall though I thought it was comprehensive and reasonably balanced – I thought he did a good job of presenting alternate theories for events when the evidence was unclear.  I’m still not convinced of his interpretation of some events (including around the Pete Best sacking and the EMI contract) – but those parts gave me lots of interesting information to ponder.

I would really like to see a volume on the post 1970 (particularly around 1970-1981) period which I think is lacking coverage in this sort of detail and authority.

Nearly two-thirds in and still enjoying this a great deal. Again, just wish there were more photos. Nice to see Beatles Bible getting a mention, though.

I know there was a mention in the notes section, with regard to the Raymond Jones story. Was there anything else?

I got the standard edition for $25 (about 15 pounds), which was great considering it had been $40 just 2 weeks earlier. I’m 600 pages in, and it’s absolutely fantastic so far. Great detail, but not boring, gets a great balance.

I have a question: is it worth it to even try to get the extended edition if I already have the standard edition? Thanks.

Oh, and trcanberra, I think that would be great if volume two was their time as the Beatles, then volume three was 1971-present, maybe using most of the book for pre-1980, then about 100 pages for 1981-present?

from Marks twitter today

“The extended edition of Tune In has sold out and is now unavailable. Another print may or may not be scheduled at some future time. The e-book (issued in two halves) IS still available, but it’s UK only. My US publisher, Crown, wouldn’t issue the extended book and couldn’t agree terms for the e-book. I’m sorry about that, for me and for everyone in US who wants to buy it, but I can do nothing about it.”

^^^ Well that’s annoying I thought Lewisohn said earlier that the extended edition is not a ‘limited edition’ and if it sold out- another load would be printed.

The only libraries in the US with the extended edition that I can locate are :

University of Chicago
Georgetown University
Smith College
University of PittsburghRock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum

Quite a few libraries in the UK, New Zealand, and Australia have it. One library in Denmark has it.

Awesome, I live in Pittsburgh. Problem is, it’s a university library, so I can’t just walk in and check out a book. I should probably finish the Standard edition anyway.

At U of Pittsburgh the book is in:

Music Library (B-28 Music Building)Call Number: ML421.B4 L498 2013

Wow, they charge a lot for their “Special Borrower Card”. Perhaps you can take a Saturday and go to the library and look through the the extended version.

If you’re currently not affiliated with any of the above-listed schools you can purchase a Special Borrower’s Card at the Hillman Library Ground Floor Desk

  • The cost of the card is $50.00 for Pitt alumni and $100.00 for all others

  • The card is valid for a period of one year, and DOES NOT permit access to most online electronic resources, with PITTCat+, the University’s online library catalog, a notable exception

  • Only full-time circulation staff are permitted to issue a Special Borrower’s card

  • For complete information please view our Special Borrower’s Rules and Regulations pamphlet (PDF)

We charge a whole $1 for ours.

I only got the US standard edition for my library.

EDIT:You might check the interlibrary loan option/route with your public library to see if they have an borrowing agreement with the University.
